Ben was a do-it-yourself kind of guy, or so he liked to believe. His 1997 Toyota RAV4, with over 500,000 kilometers on the clock, was his pride and joy. One day, he noticed oil pooling beneath the car. “It’s just a little leak,” he told himself, wiping his hands on his jeans.
For weeks, the leak worsened. His friend Dave, a mechanic, warned him that it was probably the oil pump gasket. But Ben shrugged it off. “I don’t need to tear the engine apart for that,” he said. “I’ll just top it up with oil.”
And that’s exactly what he did. Every few days, he would pour more oil into the engine, convincing himself that this was easier than fixing the gasket. It wasn’t laziness, he reasoned-it was efficiency. Each time the oil light blinked on, Ben simply grabbed another bottle of oil from his trunk, poured it in, and went on his way.
One day, the engine began making a terrible grinding noise. The temperature gauge shot up, and the car sputtered to a halt. Ben opened the hood to find the engine covered in oil, the stench of burning metal in the air.
“Should’ve fixed that gasket,” Ben muttered as he called Dave.
Dave arrived with the tow truck, shaking his head. “You finally ready to fix it the right way?” he asked, smirking.
Ben sighed, defeated. “Yeah, I guess I can’t just keep adding oil forever.”
Dave laughed. “Took you long enough.”
As they towed the RAV4 away, Ben stared at the half-empty bottle of oil in his hand and thought, maybe I should’ve listened sooner.
