    Knowing myself a bunch of current and ex- faang people, this summary sounds quite accurate indeed.
    I would add one more somewhat common case: some people join Faang to prove to themselves that they can, and quickly discover they do not like the "big corp" aspect of it and move rather fast (less than 2 years in) to smaller scale companies/startups.

    As a FAANG employee, I can confirm this is accurate. I'm at the point where I'm thinking maybe i can better allocate the 50-60 hours I work a week (let alone the time I spend thinking about my job outside of production) into my own initiatives to achieve better results. The bar is high at these companies and it can be tough to broaden your horizons whilst maintaining a high standard in your core job.

      Are the developers at FAANG companies really so good? The companies' products have declined in quality over the last two decades and I have heard anecdotes about how the code is all a giant, bug riddled mess, poorly documented, not commented, etc.

    • @sandehbyss
      @sandehbyss 2 года назад +22

      @@eitkoml That's probably too broad of a statement to make. For sure there are plenty of insanely smart, talented engineers at these big tech companies. But, executives/leadership don't always create the environments that allows them to succeed. For example, the pressure to produce near-term results means devs are more likely to focus on fighting fires and churning out features ASAP rather than doing sufficient planning, architecting, documentation. This, coupled with the high turnover (causing a lot of domain-specific knowledge to leave the company) works against the codebase quality. This is of course highly-dependent on company, product, team, etc. though.

Because like 85% of people don't get past the first promotion (after 2-4 years) and get the axe shortly afterward. And it's not "competitive" it's SELECTIVE. That is, you can work your a$$ of and be among the best and they still won't promote you. They'll pick someone else based on identity, nebulous "needs of the company", because that person is more of a conformist (brown noser), etc. So trying to bust my butt just to preen for the employer would be senseless IMHO. I would spend all the free time to work on personal projects, contribute to open source projects to build a rep, and get certs. I would save my money and sleep at one of those nerd flop houses where they have 8 bunks to a bedroom. Anyway, I didn't work at FAANG, but at a payment processor. We handled about 13% of ALL CC PPOS txns in the US. I managed THE LARGEST Meraki deployent in existence. They hired a programmer. The guy didn't do $hit. The company had a policy that they would pay for your certs. Well he just came into work, spent all day studying for about six months. He didn't do $hit on the codebase. I'm planning to stay for several years because of the stock vesting schedule, but I can't deny it's difficult to keep it up over the long run. Everyone is insanely competitive by nature. Everyone seems like a high flyer, but when I talk to my colleagues one-on-one, I find out that they're all equally stressed out and have their fair share of imposter syndrome. I think many people in FAANG are there to get the brand name in their CV, and using that to negotiate an even higher pay at a more senior position in another company.

If you're an accounting student you are expected to go do your 2 or 3 years at the big 4 accounting firms, get your CPA, make senior and leave for a small to mid size industry job with more benefits, better work-life balance and less stress. Same thing with the big investment banks, go work for JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, etc jump to a small regional/community bank. They all have in common that it's nearly impossible to maintain working there as a long term career and essentially giving up 2 or 3 years of your life to do it. Eff programming at one of these "software engineering" companies. What's better if you REALLY like programming is to get a job where you aren't programming on a product that has high pressure to ship and is one of the core competencies of the company. Work somewhere where it's tangential but still needed for your role, better yet where you have potential to really increase productivity. I worked as a Network Engineer for a payment processor that was the largest Meraki deployment for years (20,000 machines). I had a LOT of time because I worked third shift and got to play around and write whatever I wanted with whatever I wanted and made a bunch of utilities and stuff for fun in Python and Erlang. Also, I also used the free time to get good and contribute to open source projects and studied to get certs. THAT is what you want. Have you ever listened to Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie or Brian Kernighan talk about working at Bell Labs? That's the kind of work environment you want! Something that is chill and almost like Uni/grad school. Maybe it's not for everyone. But if you have self-efficacy, it's paradise. Low pressure, high freedom, low workload. Screw chasing "glory" LOL.

      The reason they can pay their employees so much is because of economies of scale. According to my experience, working at a product based company is really bad, because you are stuck in a framework a few few frameworks developed by the company and your whole life go to develop or maintain it. You don't grow yourself with latest technologies. If it happens, it barely happens. On top of that, it's really hard to have better roles since in a product based companies those who have been in long term get that privilege. So you might come in as a top talent, but you still have to work under someone until you catch up the underlying framework and how to work on it.

    Well it has to do with the terms of how they pay their "bonuses". About half or two-thirds of their compensation is in the form of stock bonuses that have strings attached to it. It doesn't "vest" until after you've been at the company a few years. Let's say four years. So after 3 years, 11 months and 29 days, your manager calls you into the office saying "WE NEED TO TALK". That conversation invariably ends at "security is here to escort you out of the building. We'll mail you the contents of your desk". There go your "bonuses". Perfectly legal for the company to play that came for every single person. Just assume that you'll never see any of these promised "bonuses". Like they say, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!

    to sum up FANG
    1. they focus on hiring grads at prestigious tech uni's that had internships with big corporate companies (or well world known like even PIXAR would be in the list)
    2. high turnover because recruiters target ppl who are working at other fang companies when at conventions (say like developer's conference etc...) so they are rotating
    3. some people only worked their internships, they end up having some drama at one fang company then apply at another - then realize oh all companies have some sort of drama
    4. some go off to pursue their own dreams after getting some finances in the bank (known multiple that have done this due to well... they can feel weird when their product is literally just getting users.. feels sorta unfulfilling when your creations don't mean much but how many people use and keep using your creation is what is important...)
    5. they put off some people with skills/experience because if you didn't work for said company, or worked at a high profile uni with notable internships they don't look at you so the people that would more likely stay don't make it through the screening -- happened to a friend but he could probably get a job if he applied but he is loyal when treated well
