- Liam Treadwell, the jockey who achieved an improbable victory aboard a 100-1 shot in the Grand National in 2009, has died. The 34-year-old was found at his Shropshire home on Tuesday morning.
Treadwell’s racing career was closely associated with the trainer Venetia Williams, who gave him the National-winning ride aboard Mon Mome when her principal jockey chose to ride her other runner. “It was the best day of my life, and largely thanks to a fantastic ride from him,” she said on Tuesday.

There is a serious problem in the jockey community with depression and that is in no small part to do with the diet and lifestyle of these competitors. I studied sports science at college and one of our professors was working very closely with elite jockeys. He told us that their diets were shocking. They would eat maybe a Mars bar for breakfast then nothing until later that night, maybe a protein bar or a can of coke. They used saunas regularly in order to lose weight. They were basically anorexic and bulimic. They used laxatives, over exercise and vomiting to control their weight and they all had osteoporosis. When you are on a constant diet and your body is not nourished it affects the brain in an extreme way. Depression and suicidal ideation result with food and weight loss becoming an obsession. That's why theres such a problem with elite level jockeys and it needs to stop before someone else takes their life.

The greatest day of his life was ruined by some ' fella' commenting on his teeth . Telling him to look into the camera and ' show the world his teeth '

His death has been described as unexplained with no third party involvement. This description is often used in the case of suicides when for various reasons, often requests from the family, that the true cause of death not be disclosed. Unfortunately I think it is pretty evident that this was suicide.
