    Am swedish and ive eaten surströmming! The first thing you did right is opening it under water, it makes the smell less intense ☺️
    When eating surströmming you first have to remove the bones, we don’t eat those 😅 then you have tunnbröd (a thin hard bread) boiled potatoes, chopped red unions, shives, sour cream and we also had tomatoes! Then you make a sandwich with everything ☺️ everything together brings down the saltiness of the surströmming and it’s actually kind of good! But with that said we usually have a lot of snaps with it 🙄

    Hey Naomi I‘m a Swiss biology student and just wanted to say that probably you didn‘t lose any senses in your taste buds. Most likely the „Stützzellen“ in your nose are damaged from the infection, so you lost parts of your sense of smell (which is highly corralated with how you experience the taste of food). That‘s why sweetness, sourness and spiceyness aren‘t affected haha.
    Also DONT EAT DOSENFOOD THAT HAS BÄULEN!!! There could be botulinum toxin that has developed and that‘s actually really scary.

    I've never seen someone just bite into a kiwi like that 😅 anyways, she may have an allergy to kiwis. As I've gotten older, I can't eat a lot of fruits anymore - they make my mouth so itchy, raw, and burny.

    • @Starchild91
      @Starchild91 2 года назад +72

      Actually, kiwis and pineapples do that to your tongue even without you being allergic. They have an enzyme in them that breaks down protein, aka your tongue and cheeks. While you eat them, they eat you! :D

    • @ashleigh_ann
      @ashleigh_ann 2 года назад +26

      @@Starchild91 I know that. But you can still be allergic. I can't touch pineapple at all, even cocktails with pineapple juice. Fruit allergies are common when you have tree/grass allergies - which is why I can't eat many anymore. Peach/nectarines, plums and cherries are also really bad for me.

    • @yadingus4422
      @yadingus4422 2 года назад +12

      @@Starchild91 I mean yeah, but itching and burning is one of the main signs of allergy to foods... Even though kiwis and pineapples are acidic, they definitely do not make my mouth burn or itch. I know that's a personal anecdote, but I don't think that's normal as an initial reaction regardless. It can be normal after eating a lot, but if you're burning or itching after the first or second bite, it's likely an allergy of some sort.
      EDIT: Look up "Oral Allergy Syndrome." If you react to food in this way, it is an allergy. You shouldn't have any allergic reaction symptoms to any food in your mouth unless it is an allergy. I myself have this (it is very common) with some spices (like fennel). You might think it isn't an allergy because tests come back negative for the fruit, veg, nut, or spice itself, but you are likely allergic to the pollen on/in it instead. So if your body reacts negatively and attacks itself for a food, it is an allergy. If your mouth just feels sore (possibly small swelling) with none of the allergy symptoms after acidic foods, then it is likely just the acidity breaking down your mouth. And food intolerance generally happens during digestion.

    the thing is, you can actually "taste" the spiciness because different from you other senses of taste (sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami) which are perceived through your taste buds mainly on your tongue the "taste" of spiciness isn't! it's perceived through thermoceptors as heat which then activate a special type of receptor for pain (nociceptors) so technically spicy isn't a taste in that sense :D the more u know

    Loved the video Naomi and wish you Gute Besserung! Just wanted to say (i have a Msc in Food Safety) - if cans look like that one (bloated or deformed) when they're sitting at home or if you've just bought them, it can be indicative of a badly sealed can or of bacterial proliferation in the can (even though canned foods are usually very sterile). Sometimes if they have fallen or have been badly sealed this can happen and the bacteria that proliferates in tin/can environments can be deadly (Clostridium botulinum) so just PSA: always be mindful of your cans :) I don't want to seem negative or anything, just think it's important to mention!

      Some canned items will last a very long time without any recognizable change. For example, in this paper researchers describe the characteristics of some very old cans of food: a 40 year old can of corn, pickle relish found aboard the sunken U.S.S Monitor (sunk 1862), and several canned products from the steamboat, Bertrand (sunk 1865). The results prove that even foods canned using the earliest canning methods, like those pioneered by Bryan Donkin based on Nicholas Apperts processes (using glass) and Peter Durand’s patent, can stand the test of time.

    A lot of my friends aren't able to taste or smell after getting sick too. Some of them, after many months, were able to taste things faintly and some things more than others. These friends tend to pick foods based on what texture they feel like having that day instead of thinking so much about what they crave in flavors anymore, or having to rely on what memory they have about what the food tasted like when eating foods.
    One friend and I went to kbbq and I asked if it tastes good to her, and she said not exactly, but she KNOWS in her brain that it's supposed to taste really good so she still had a good time eating it.
    I hope everyone continues to stay safe even with the lifting mandates (in the US anyways) and that there will be some kind of treatment for those who have no sense or impaired sense of taste & smell that are proven to help.

      It’s the difference between taste and flavour! “Taste” is only for the 5 tastes - sweet, sour, bitter, salt, umami… we have specific receptors on our tongues for these 5 things, so e.g. they pick up “sweet” through presence of sugar; “umami” through presence of glutamate. The thing that is lost with what you describe is “flavour”, and this actually is perceived via something called retronasal olfaction, which is just a fancy word for smell but through the back of our nose via our mouth instead 😆 this is what you lost, you still had your taste buds picking up sugars, salt etc. but had no flavour beyond that. :)

I actually don't remember ANY of it and I never drank it again. I can handle my alcohol well (when I used to drink) but this was a whole other level. We also did the spoon method with the sugar, apparently, you are to hallucinate with Absinthe this way. I have a bottle to this day, the Marylin Manson Absinthe, which I will never open - it just stands there in a display. But my god...don't ever do the spoon method, I was too wild and amazed I didn't kill myself or end up in the ER. Running through fire? I have long hair, like what was I thinking.

      Absinthe doesn't actually cause hallucinations. I've had it many times and gotten completely trashed off it. Experts agree that any hallucinations people experienced from absinthe in history wasn't actually from the thujone in the wormwood, but due to methanol since they were essentially drinking low quality moonshine. You'd have to ingest a ridiculous amount to react to thujone, and you'd probably just go into convulsions instead of hallucinate.

You eat it on a knäckebröd or thinbread with butter, boiled potato, sourcream and read oninon! I personally do not eat it because of the smell, but people who eats it says that it doesn't taste as it smells. But your can was like dead and buried ☠️

    Surströmming is usually a midsummer dish. We eat it with either thin knäckebröd or flatbread and then sourcream, onions and cooked potatoes and make a sandwich style dish out of it ☺️ and alcohol pairs well with it either spirits like vodka or beer.
