Been a painter and decorator for over 40 years and I'm still amazed at the crackpot ideas some lazy buggers come up with. Cold water tap and a bit of elbow grease is all you need for emulsions on rollers.

If you are sending the paint down the drain you are not doing the ocean any favors by paint pollution.
Paint cleaning water needs to be allowed to evaporate and then put in the trash.

Rather than clean your rollers out between coats, wrap them tightly in a plastic grocery bag. This keeps them from drying out. I've left them for a couple of days, and they're good to go still.

There are drill attachments for brushes and rollers for cleaning them. I have been using one for years. It's called the Dandy paint roller and brush cleaner. I tend to just leave my brushes and rollers in a tub of water over night,if I am not in a hurry though. I am a professional painter. You can also leave oil based brushes in water for a few days without damaging the bristles, just don't cover the handles if they are wooden as they will expand and damage them.

The thing is, you do not want to wash your paint tools at home. No matter what paint you´re using, you shouldnt pour that dirty water out in your sink at home. Paint contains things that cant be cleansed out by water filters. So it will destroy the nature and end up in the water supplies. For example, waterbased paint might sound like a good alternative, but if its waterbased latexpaint its gonna contain super tiny plastic particles. Its better to throw the rolls and brushes when your done. And you can always store your rolls and brushes in double plastic bags until the project your doing is done. Any leftover paint should be left to dry up, when its dried you can just throw it where you would usually throw plastic or metal containers.
