I met him in 1976 in Henniker, New Hampshire where I was attending tiny New England College. I was taking a course on Ireland & my professor knew him. So I was introduced after a performance. I was immediately smitten by his music, humor & overall joy he & his bandmates brought with them. It happened to be at the start of the month long winter interim so I went along with them while they toured at colleges & pubs in New Hampshire, Vermont & Massachusetts. Looking back over 40 years, I don't recall when I ever laughed so much as during that time. I came away with a deep love of and respect for folk music (Vin & his mates' in particular) and the knowledge, even at that tender age, that I had experienced something & met someone extraordinary. I only wish I could have thanked Vin for that before he died. My condolences to his family~ he passed way too soon;(
My wife and I love the guy and have seen him several times - he's always been as friendly and funny to chat to in person as he is on stage - a true gem !
I had the privilege of seeing Vin twice. Once at the Shrewsbury folk Festival when he packed out the smaller tent late at night with 2/3's of the audience standing outside listening. And again at the Ilkley folk Club when he was touring. Brilliant and hilarious, and I still crack his "I want a belly full of Balti... Wasn't he a black American singer that sang Mary's Boy Child?" joke from Plugged every time I go out for a curry.
I came to New York City from Chile in 1974. Sometime in the next year I heard Vin's story telling and singing at the Bells of Hell and the Eagle Tavern (9th Ave. and 14 St.). I was always tickled and moved by his performances. I am so delighted he's continued the troubadours life.
Great to see Vin on youtube. Saw him some year ago in a Sheffield folk club and loved the performance. Love him all the more as a fellow native of Middlesbrough. Up the Boro!
I saw and heard Vin in 75 or 76 at a couple of New York City venues: The Eagle Tavern and The Bells of Hell. He was hilarious and played TWO tin whistles at a time! The Eagle Tavern had a great seisiun on Monday nights; and I do believe he joined in. I own several of his LPs from that era. Maybe it's time to download some MP3s from his web site.
Admire him! As a Scot in Grangetown that was welcomed my story is something similar. I filmed a UEFA cup final (in 1987) with my movie camera - 19 years before Middlesbrough reached that same final- put it on You Tube - this unkown film plucked from nowhere and now I have been interviewed by the team and they are about to put on DVD - hope it sells well. Teesside is indeed God's second place! Well done Vin - you done well!
He's social engegagemen came before this, so I'm clingi'n too his early LP's. A human bein' devoting to humans(YOU, mate), and commited to change, everyday...

Lovely to see Vin at home and busking on the street and walking in Teeside, his favourite place. I'm hoping Vin will come back to Kent soon!
