When the game is played in an enclosed area it’s called an arena. When it’s played in an outdoor area ,where you’re exposed to the elements ,it’s a stadium.

The thing about getting gifted tickets by a friendly American, it’s not necessarily a “once in a lifetime opportunity” in the sense that Americans are really friendly and more than willing to go out of their way to help strangers/foreigners! If y’all continue to travel around the US I GUARANTEE this won’t be the last time some random person shows you kindness like this.

The reason the action stopped and started like that? Lia nailed it, adverts. The game was being broadcast on national television and they can't let people miss anything during a commercial, so they stop the game for them. Yes, it's a bother. It's better to watch college games, which aren't usually televised, to get a better game.

    • @gacaptain

It's the reason nobody pays attention to the game in the arena. The NBA is an event, but the game is unwatchable. It's been that way for decades. If you actually like the game of basketball, then college games are the only choice.

The stops are mostly for fouls and timeouts. There are scheduled TV breaks built into the game clock. Ads aren't the reason for the "stoppy-starty". When they do go to commercials for a TV timeout that's when the Sixers' staff come out with the family entertainment to keep everybody involved.

  • @Jeff_Lichtman

If you ever go to another sporting event, you should try to get a press pass. You can get in early through a special entrance (usually), and they'll let you bring in any camera gear.
I'd think Joel mixed up the 76ers and the 49ers to get the 69ers, except he's probably never heard of the 49ers either.

I find that most of the difference in English between the UK and North America is that over here we have a much greater variety. Whenever I've been in the UK or even Australia sometimes they'll say, oh you call it an elevator and not a lift. And then I say, no we have lifts also but they're different. You get inside of an elevator it has a roof and doors that close. A lift is something that you get on top of and it lifts you a shorter distance. It's also more commonly used for goods than for people In general it seems they use one word to describe a bunch of different things that are related whereas in the US we have different names for each thing.

Stadiums are usually outdoor except domes. But for football 🏈 and soccer ⚽. Arenas are always indoor usually under 20k capacity for hockey and basketball.

If you ever have the chance, go to a college or even High School game. You're more likely to see a lot more continuous action. It can get pretty exciting when the scores are going back and forth between who's in the lead. And of course there's a vast difference in size between an arena and a high school gymnasium, so obviously you're going to be Much closer to the action, making a huge difference in the experience.

It might be a smart thing to purchase some Visa prepaid cards here when you get into the states so that you have those available purchase things that require a debit or credit card

Here in Atlanta some people use the term alot. They will use the expression "Drip Check" to mean stopping to check yourself out in the mirror.

76ers was derived from 1776 when the USA (13 states at the time) formally became independent from the British empire. But I’m not a historian, so it could have been 1769 in which case 69ers would probably be the appropriate team name.

At least they score though. Soccer may have the guys running around all the time, but scoring is too difficult to keep the interest of many Americans.

Carry emergency cash always you can't count on the credit card or cash machines working. Glad you got the opportunity to go to a game and you seem to have enjoyed it. Can't wait for the next video.
