    • @Bryan-fg4kt
      @Bryan-fg4kt 4 года назад +2

      Matty the Killa when you arrive at SOI, they ask if anyone wants to try out for recon, if you fail BRC they drop you and choose your MOS, or you can ask your recruiter for a recon contract although the same thing applies if you fail they chose your MOS. Once they assign your MOS, 0311 for example and hit the fleet you can move to MARSOC as an NCO only. You can also receive recon orders, for example, 0621 (Radio operators) sometimes get recon or raider orders after the school house

  • @cm-pr2ys
    @cm-pr2ys 4 года назад +12

    This is a very interesting and thought provoking video. I hope people in the future can use it to get an insider view on Marine infantry and Recon life. Just my .02 cents:
    It's peacetime now. If it was wartime, everyone in the conventional Marine Corps (Force Recon included) would be getting some. As such, you gotta pick and choose the road ahead of you. If you sign up with a recon contract, its the quickest way into Recon with no time wasted, but also the riskiest if you fail. If you just go straight leg 03, you can be at your unit for a Year and a Half testing out the water and seeing if you like the infantry and you want to go Recon. You can also try out for Scout/ Sniper or wait another year or so and put in a MARSOC package. That's the slowest and least sexiest but maybe the smartest option if you bare minimum want to be an 03XX.
    If you go straight leg infantry, your chances of getting a shitty chain of command and peers are obviously higher than if you went Scout/ Sniper or Recon, as well as not getting as cool training as they do. Recon Battalions have more Scout/ Sniper qualified Marines than infantry battalions do in their Scout/ Sniper Platoons. You'd get to the fleet quicker and get out of the Marine Corps faster if you went straight infantry. 7th Marines is probably the most squared away and tough Marine Infantry unit right now, seeing as they never quite stopped deploying to the middle east, but you will have to put up with being in 29 Palms.
    Security Forces can be cool, and I recommend 1st FAST Company out of all the choices. Presidential Security is a unique opportunity, but you won't deploy, and it is very stressful. PRP is typically regarded as the worst assignment in USMC Security Forces because they don't deploy anywhere, but you will have more time to do college. If you go PRP, make sure you get on the RTT. FAST is probably the most exciting and promising option, and I mention 1st FAST because with 2nd FAST, Marines are going to Japan anyway on MEUs and UDPs from both east coast, Hawaii, and west coast units. With 3rd FAST, you're going to be sweating your ass off in Bahrain. Tie the heat in with the fact that ALL THREE FAST companies don't get a lot of action because they're defensive and reactionary (as opposed to offensive and proactive), and you might feel you wasted your two years. Different strokes for different folks, but I'd want to be in Spain for 6 months vice the hot ass desert. 1st FAST all the way, and hopefully you get to go to CQB school and Cuba as well.
    Scout/ Snipers seem to get the shortest end of the stick when it comes to the "elite" Marine communities. They are really where the rubber meets the road, as they had to come up in a straight leg infantry unit (imagine being in 29 Palms- fuck your life) their whole time. They don't get cool training and relaxed standards until they pass SSBC. Even then, the unit isn't a Scout/ Sniper Battalion, it's a infantry battalion. Cool training and common sense often takes a back seat to the daily infantry grind. This is why I mention that being a Scout/ Sniper qualified Marine in a Recon Battalion is probably a more rewarding opportunity (rewarding for your efforts) vice being a Scout/ Sniper qualified Marine in a Infantry battalion. I mean, even if you were a Scout/ Sniper in an Infantry Battalion, you'd still have to go through BRC to get to Recon. Scout/ Sniper qualified Recon Marines have no such hurdle, should they somehow or someway go to an infantry battalion. Scout/ Snipers outside of Recon don't get jump or dive schools, and so on and so on. Just something to consider.
    Many people seem to consider going Recon a poor choice when MARSOC exists. I think that they would be wise to take a serious look at Recon again though. Unlike MARSOC, Recon has a part time component in 4th Recon Battalion and 4th Force Recon Company. If you want to be a Raider but part time while you got out after your first contract to go to school, well, it isn't possible. MARSOC has no reserve component. Recon also has a much shorter training process, being about 4 months with RTAP and BRC, vice 8 months with A&S and ITC. I'm not too sure about BRC, but with ITC, another big thing you have to consider is that you can pass all the training and make it through to the end just to not get selected at the selection board. Imagine passing the hardest training the USMC has to offer, and you didn't make it through and now you're going back to the MOS you tried to leave. Recon also has a location in Okinawa (active) and a location in Hawaii (reserve) if that appeals to you. MARSOC does not, and if MARSOC actually does move to Lejeune, then Recon will have the nice sunny beaches and beautiful women of San Clemente, CA all to themselves. If being on the east coast is a deal breaker for you, you may not want to go MARSOC. Apart from the Raiders, Recon is really and truly the next best unit to be in in the USMC. You have a much higher chance of doing things like Scout/ Sniper School, Airborne School, Ranger School, even the Exchange Program with Royal Marines where you can complete things like their Commando Course, Mountain Leader Course, and Sniper Course. They're the next best place to be under MARSOC, regardless of if Recon/ Force Recon is in SOCOM or not. Whether it's peacetime or wartime, a Recon Marine is going to have more opportunities than straight leg infantry. If you don't like how MARSOC limits you in terms of training time, the selection board, lack of duty stations, and lack of a part time option, and you want to stay Marine, go Recon. Recon was holding it down before MARSOC came around, and they're still a solid unit to be in with a on average higher quality of Marine and better treatment. You don't have to leave the Marine Corps after your first enlistment for the Army if you don't want to.

      Think about it again though. As a brand new Recon Marine, you are going to be WAY TOO BUSY to have the time, experience, and self awareness to notice you're underutilized. Matter of fact, you're going to be WAY too excited that you passed BRC and you're on to Airborne School, or you passed SERE and you're finally getting to your first Marine Corps unit, let alone your first Recon unit, as a Recon Marine. From there, you're again going to be way too busy to realize what's going on around you because Recon Marines have a high skill level and huge skillset (think toolbox). Your head is going to be down in your work trying to keep up and prove your worth on your Recon Team and show all the senior and more experienced Recon Marines you actually belong. Save the noticing of disappointment for later when you have downtime. In the meantime, youve got BRC and the follow on schools, Scout/ Sniper Training, Ranger School, Joint Ops with foreign militaries (South Korean Recon Marines, Filipino Force Recon Marines, Thai Recon Marines, etc.). Don't put the cart before the horse, as they say. Relish in your moment of passing BRC and achieving your dream, because it only comes around once.

    I see things have changed since the 80's. Treading water for basic swim qual in boot camp was a lot longer than four minutes. Anyway for recon there was no recruitment contract for a tryout then. You got invited to try by your Bn command and only an infantry MOS could go to Indoc. So you had to be one squared away and capable Marine to be invited. ARC on the east coast was no joke and that video is awesome about BRC which is on the west coast. As for the attrition rate, I didn't see that high of a percentage but then again everyone there was a well accomplished infantry marine of at least an E3 in rank and one deployment. But that was in peace time so in war time the pipeline adapts. Back then everyone wanted to be there and trained for it. 2nd Force Recon Indoc included a 26.2 mile run. Minimum 5 years in and they drew from BN recon. Oh and they reached out to you personally.
    Great video!

    Nice video. The only thing I would add is Recon is not apart of Marsoc. The only thing that’s in marsoc (Marine special operations command) is the Raiders, and we fall under SOCOM which is the Army (we are still apart of the marine corps just take orders from both the Marine Corps and the army basically). In fact. An 0321 isn’t even special operations, they are “special operations capable” They are just a glorified grunts. So that also means you probably won’t go to jump school and free fall school and combat diver school while being in the pipeline. Because then you’re considered an 0326. And those are the guys who jump out of planes and do the shit everyone thinks recon does. So you probably won’t become an 0326 until after you check into your unit.

    Every Rifle Company conducts reconsonance. It's basically the first riule of Intelligence gathering for the Rear Echelon to establish its forward advance strategy and its rule of engagement to the Company commanders.
    However the Marines actually have a specific Reconansance Mos. You'll have to qualify and you must pass three month's of intense Combat training.
    Marines must earn other accolades, and that is Airborne wings, as well as Deep water divers Accolades.
    Upon successful completion, that Marine will recieve these two Badges of Recognition.
    Good Luck to all those who dare to desire to become the elite Msrine Combat fighter.

Inf., C.A.S. And much much more. I’ve also had numerous attachments pre 9/11 and post 9/11. All my Marines were WSQ swimmers including myself but I was in a smaller contingent. i’m not just talking training but forward deployed ops. It all comes down to your unit and how they decide to employ you and quotas available. I was the last of the Dragons and first Javelins from Raytheon in the Corps. It also depends whether not you’re a shitbird or not.

    First off, people talk about SOCOM tier 2 and 1 units and think Marine Recon is somehow less than tier 2, nothing could be further from the truth. Recon is not part of SOCOM. Recon and Force Recon is the MAGTF's personal SOCOM. Recon is called "Special Operations Capable." And they are. People think because they are not SOCOM, that the training is any less grueling and less intense than SOCOM units. Nothing, could be further from the truth. In fact, and yes, I'll say it twice, in fact. The Navy looked to the 1950's Force Recon to use as a template for establishing and developing their SEAL program for turning UDTs into SEALs. SEALs hell week is a minor page out of Force Recon selection etc. from the 1950's. Marine Recon has a different mission and customer than SOCOM units. Recon is dedicated to the overall mission of the Marine Corps through the MAGTF/MEU.
