Kelis went through a lot this year, losing her husband and now this, people have their breaking points and I believe this was a Subtle way of addressing the issue! Nobody is above reproach, and she shouldn't be scared to speak how she feels!
She shouldn’t have mentioned Beyoncé’s name at all. Beyonce didn’t steal from her at all. She should have focused on Neptunes. But again, the music was created by Netune, not Kelis. So she doesn’t have any rights to it. She was just the vocalist. The song was intended for Britney but was given to Kelis to sing.
I respect you so much for this comment!!! Celebrities are seen as God's these days it's scary - God forbid if any local has an opinion about their fave ... next thing you know your house address is leaked - it's crazy.
Subtle? Calling someone stupid, ignorant, soulless, and Satan isn't subtle. All that was unnecessary. She said it wasn't about Bey, but why make it so personal??
Well Beyonce, empowered Kelis right on off of her track. As was her right. I applaud her for doing so. She owes Kelis nada. Kelis can go back into semi-retirement now.
The Dream’s explanation was 100% necessary and made 100% sense. I respect Diane’s pen, but she wanted to be shady and use the “🙄” emoji after her tweet. She got checked. If you don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all.

Kelis' issue is with the Neptunes. She just used Beyonce as a pawn to get her story out. Kelis' issues w/the Neptunes have been ongoing for 20+ years. By trashing Bey for a few seconds of la la la's she knew her story would get traction on social media bc Beyonce is a very polarizing figure. I like Kelis and think she is very talented and beautiful but I sincerely believe she made a bad decision with how she approached this. As someone who genuinely/authentically enjoys music; especially hip-hop; I've always had a great deal of respect for Pharrell/The Neptunes' ear and their production which has been cemented in the black music culture, but I have to say that ever since this whole discrepancy with Bey/Kelis; I'm really disappointed in them for how they treated Kelis. Like I don't get why it is so hard to be fair...? Like all y'all had to do was make music; and get money together. They were great collaborators; and I hate that Kelis suffered at the hands of his/their greed. However, I do think that there is some shared responsibility because I think that it goes back to artists (in this instance, Kelis) needing to be vigilant and intentional in seeking professional guidance when signing any form of contracts/negotiations. I don't care who the person is to you; when money is involved (especially large amounts); I think that people's true character shows. But, I also get that she probably truly trusted that he had her best interests at heart as well. Like it's crazy that she hasn't been able to eat off of what were her/their biggest records. Lesson learned.
H..I love all your videos..you always have the best topics. People is Jealous of Nicki and Beyonce that’s always gonna be . Like Nicki said…no weapon formed against her will prosper. God bless you all.🙏🏽
Diane asked a very valid question. The Dream was doing way too much. Why did he feel the need to challenge the woman one on one? I said what I said and I meant what I said. There's a time and a place for everything.
Diane has been in the industry for a long time. She knows that when you sample a song or multiple songs many people are credited. I mean she is getting sued for 20 mil for failing to do just that.
1) Kelis gave equal smoke to the Neptune's and Beyoncé. She had every right. She spoke facts. 💯 2) Micro aggressions need to checked at all times.✊🏾 The Dream was absolutely right to not play with Diane Warren and school her. @Himynameis To be clear. It DOESN'T MATTER WHO. You can't do shady business dealings, have your brand be about women empowerment, piss off an artist who was ripped off and then expect them to stay silent or speak on the matter gently. Let's be realistic.
Kelis you can't have it both ways. She took you off the song because you claimed it was disrespectful not to ask you even tho you don't own the song or beat. Now that she took you off it's still a problem Chile go on lol

She did right actually. You go out there everyone who stands to benefit off of that record. For example, if I were to sample Anita Baker and then interpolated in order to sell it to another artist, Anita's estate and company would go after everyone involved. It's the reason why Kendrick Lamar was getting sued for records.

I saw ppl saying Beyoncé didn’t have to call kelis but kelis and Beyoncé know eachother they go way back. I personally think Beyoncé was being spiteful and she didn’t think kelis would be too chicken to call her out publicly. Even if kelis doesn’t own her masters and was scammed out of her getting her royalties for her music, but milkshake is kelis’ most notable song and is very famous, so the fact that’s she thought she didn’t have to call her is very telling. Seems like she’s mad that kelis used to date jay z way back
I notice a lot of y’all are defending Beyonce based purely on your fandom. Y’all are not properly comprehending what Kelis said. If this was the other way around, y’all would want Beyonce to be treated with the respect she deserves. Yeah the Satan joke might have been too far, but everything she said was spot on.

You're absolutely correct. Black women are always used as a door mat in the industry, it was disappointing when there was lack of support between the two.
People in the comments taking about how Kelis took it took personally. MUSIC IS PERSONAL. If you are a songwriter or producer you would understand. Music is created from a very personal place. Beyoncé always puts her name in stuff she probably doesn’t write. Lots of people get writing credit just for adding 1 word. Trust I seen it happen. I understand where Kelis is coming from. Beyoncé is a great performer, but she also steals a lot without acknowledging the artist she stole from. No matter were you are in your career, if you used something someone else created you should show respect. She would expect the same.
Why can't stans just chill for a little bit? The Kelis thing is about how she was used by Neptunes. That shit makes me not respect Neptunes too much even tho I love their production/music. Diane was not confused. Beyonce always has a whole village credited in her songs. Lol. Not just for this album. Secondly, if another artist did the same thing to Beyonce that she did to Kelis the Beyhive would go bananas. Beyonce is not exempt of accountability.

@@dawb86 Nobody would have been in Kelis’ side. Kelis is in the wrong. When the artist needs a simple cleared the label does it for them. There’s no rule that says you have to give the artist a heads up.
I get Kelis' frustration here. Knowing the machine behind Beyonce and the forethought that goes into everything that she does, it is hard to imagine how this one detail could have been missed. It is good that she is no longer credited in the album. It means that whoever holds the predatory contacts she signed is also not benefiting in the shadows from her work. I think the rhetoric around Beyonce doing this for petty reasons is a little far-fetched. First and foremost, as she said in her album, she is about her bag. She solved a problem in the most cost-effective and efficient way she knew how and, I'm sure, was advised to, the same way she went back to the studio to remove the alleged problematic word. It's old to see people try to pit these two women against each other for entertainment. Kelis is an icon in her own right and the new generation might not know, but she is. Just because you don't know who someone is doesn't mean they don't exist or that you can diminish what they have done. Beyonce continues to break records and set trends. Let the two women remain in their lanes in peace. They are both secure, but now that Kelis has sounded the alarm, the conversation should be focused on just how many artists, women especially, from Kelis' time and after are still beholden to predatory contracts held by musty men! That's what we should be focused on!
The last sentence may hold true but, we’re not going to sit here and act like Kelis does not have an issue with Beyoncé. They have been having issues since the 90s.
If certain people don't like Nicki Minaj, they should leave her alone. All that extra ish is uncalled for and you wouldn't want anyone to do that to you.
Good on Kelis for speaking out - as an illustrator who has had her work stolen and reproduced without my permission/credit/paying me, people expecting me to work for free, older people taking advantage of my age when I was young and just starting out, all that utter bollocks - I totally applaud her for speaking out. NO she should not "just be happy you were on Beyonces album". People always expect creative people to do things for nothing - exposure does not pay the rent, or keep food in your stomach. And just because you are good at what you do - be it music, art, design - does not mean you should give up being compensated for the hours of your time you have spent making said art. I am seriously side-eying the Neptunes/Pharrell. Imagine if you worked a ten hour shift waitressing or at your office and your boss said "oh we're not going to give you what you're owed because you should just be glad you're working here"? Fuck all the way off with your Grandad's spanner! I have had big jobs where the exposure was insane - but did it lead to any actual paid work? Nope. It never does. So huge praise for Kelis for speaking out about this issue, I know the Beyhive gonna bzzzz no matter what haha. But any young creatives reading this, NEVER doubt your worth or time!
@@leahscontemporary What’s even more funny is that her song has been sampled 40 times. I highly doubt all of them gave her a courtesy call or even credited her along with Neptunes!

I agree with Diane, 24 writers on one song is a lot. What that dream person said doesn't change the fact that it's still strange for it to be that many writers on one song....even with the sampling. Especially since someone in the comments mentioned that the song that was sampled only had 7 writers. If you remove those 7 writers they sampled from the old song, from the 24 writers total, that still leaves 17 writers who wrote on the new song. So still, why so many writers for a song that is probably less than 4 minutes? What the dream said doesn't really hold up, especially the stuff about black people...and about Diane. Diane hasn't had that many writers on her songs, which means more money for her. Honestly, nobody should want that many writers on their song, that just means more people to pay. Then when the time comes around to get those checks for royalties, that's just more people to split the money with. See, there are are all kinds of Royalties: •SongWriter Royalties •Publishing Royalties •Mechanical Royalties Performance Royalties Synchronization (Sync) Royalties Print Music Royalties The royalties for songwriters & publishing are split 50/50. So, that means the songwriter/s....plural, all have to split the 50% share of the money for the song writing. If there are 24 writers on a song, they have to split that 50% share 24 different ways.

Kelis’ issue is with the Neptunes and while I understand why she’s upset, her attacking Beyoncé personally, calling her satanic, soulless and having her sister say Beyoncé sleeps with producers for hits is going too far and shows that her problem with Beyoncé is personal and this was an excuse to attack her, especially when she didn’t go at any of the many other artists who sampled without calling or even crediting her.

@@deedralavon4041 I understand her perspective. That isn't a problem. She signed a contract in the music industry. The way it is set up, your art is not the focus once you sign. In my almost 40 years, I have never thought or associated the word Spaz with mentally disabled people. Who comes up with this stuff Can we say wigging out? Is that an insult to wigs? Is flipping out disrespectful to gymnasts? Seriously… lets not use slurs or accept them in the first place.
Do you know the word spaz came from? And do you know what that word means? It appears like many things the USA has lost touch with its history. It's also important to acknowledge that these are international superstar artists and terms that they use in their music may be understood differently in different countries and regions. Those disabled fans has a right to share how they feel and the artists have thr right to change the music, or not
If you had a disabled relative you'd know it differently... My sister had cerebral palsy so spastic or "spaz" meant something different. So it's exactly like the word "retarded," the Black Eyed Peas did a song on it because it was the word at the time but you'd have been offended if you had a child or relative who suffered what was then called mental retardation...
Words don't mean the same thing in every country. I bet they wouldn't like Americans policing their slang and turning it into something else that it doesn't mean.
Sounds like Pharrell cleared it with the company that has the rights, but didn't contact Kelis directly. Beyonce still acknowledge Kelis on the credits, which in my opinion was nice, especially knowing that Kelis didn't even have rights to the song
I get Kelis’s frustration about not being given a heads up, but stirring up beef with Beyoncé ain’t it because Pharrell is the one that has all the rights to her music. The way she’s being shady in the comments is giving bitter and jealousy and that’s not cute at all.
Heads up for music thats not hers?I still dont get that.Beyonce went to the right person and Kelis got mad at the wrong person.Bey didnt have to call her for shit.
It’s not jealousy. Kel is was robbed of the rights to her music through shady contracts. They took advantage of her because she was young. On top of the fact that just because someone stole ownership of something doesn’t mean it’s not still hers. I don’t know if y’all know anything about music but when you are a creative and spend so many hours to create something from nothing and put your heart in it just for it to be ripped from you for everyone to profit off of but you I think you’d be mad too.

I understand Kelis is upset. However, her issue is with the Neptune's. They were wrong to swindle Kelis. It would have been nice if these ladies could have resolved this issue another way. The fact that Ben credited Kelis for using the sample shows Bey had no ill intentions towards Kelis. The Neptune's should give Kelis her music. They're completely at fault for this messy situation
That wasn’t the first time Beyoncé have copy other artists music and there dance moves. And let’s remember this she is no Queen and no God she is just a human being trying to make her living by singing.

The Diane thing actually makes sense based on a discography. Diane Warren writes alone. Even Mariah Carey pointed out that in her song with Diane Warren 'After Tonight' she had to work kinda figure it out how to work together since Diane was adamant that she works alone. She probably wondering how 24 individuals can align on a vision I guess.
How is it not obvious to a songwriter who has been in the industry for decades but to everyone else that 24 writers probably indicates a sample.... she was being a lil petty
Beyonce along with removing Kellis has removed the interpolation in general from the song and will be fully updated on all platforms soon. Meaning Pharrell and the Neptunes no longer are profiting from the credits.
Really, she does not talk or defend herself. Everyone else defends her due to her money and power. Her album is fraudulent and she even mixes her proteges vocals on those renaissance tracks.
let's 🐝 honest, if Kelis was a white artist speaking her truth (i.e., Taylor Swift) most ppl would hear her out before calling her jealous or bitter -- Pharrell did her dirty 🤷🏾♂️
If you ask...and a British artist is selling music to an audience which includes Americans? Then of course People here don’t freely throw around that word, if they’re asked not to use it, they don’t
Beyoncé is just protecting her peace lol. It is not commonplace in the industry for artists to get “courtesy calls” from everybody utilizing a song they have zero ownership over. She did the right thing by Kelis with the limited power she had in that situation. Also, this went way further than not getting a call. Especially from somebody she has no personal relationship with. This was a manifestation of hurt, pain, and bitterness from being done dirty. The only thing she did wrong was directing all of that anger towards Bey and coming for her character and integrity when she should’ve focused on the people who actually did her dirty. Although Kelis says she’s happy with Bey removing the interpolation and her credit, I can’t help but feel she’s not as unbothered as she’s trying to seem. Certain demographics always throw shade and then hide their hands and play victim when they get called out for it lol. Kelis is valid in her feelings and I understand her frustration. However, it should be towards The Neptunes only. They screwed her over. Beyoncé mimicked her voice and her team made sure they got permission as with every other song on the album. She even still credited Kelis! Kelis made herself look childish by posting multiple rants before the song even released. Tbh, I feel like Kells was waiting for a moment to diss Beyoncé. Beyoncé doesn’t bother anyone. She minds her business and works on her craft but people always want to hate on her. Keri Hilson and Keyshia Cole- slandering her unprovoked. She said it though- “you know you that b*tch when you cause all this conversation.” A lot of people are bothered by Beyoncé’s success unfortunately🤷🏽♀️Anyways, I hope Pharrell is listening and fixes things with Kelis. She deserves that.
Agree. Beyoncé wasn’t trying to be petty but people take the smallest misunderstanding and exaggerate to make her look like the culprit. Beyoncé literally has the highest level of unbothered attitude in the industry, and it’s clear she tries to be above the drama but people r always so pressed over her for basically existing🥴🥴🥴🥴
@@Oceans777 Beyoncé does show women empowerment. She supports other women publicly but mostly privately. And seriously? She literally credited Kelis on the album… but sis wanted to call Beyoncé the spawn of Satan and that she slept her way to the top. Please ✋🏾
If Beyoncé credited Kelis.. that means Kelis was her influence. Kelis isn’t trying to sue everyone who has ever used “La La La”, she is calling out Beyoncé. People get sued and have to pay up all the time for cadence alone… it was Kelis’ cadence that Beyoncé used.. if Kelis owned her record.. that would be enough to sue Beyoncé and win. Look at Ed Sheeran “shape of you” where he used NONE of kandi Burris words from TLC “Scrubs”… BUT he has to pay her because of cadence.. Kelis “owns” “Lalala” the way SHE used the tune.

The sampling excuse makes no sense ! Janet Jackson sampled plenty in her prime, but there still wasn’t 26 writers on her songs. Also sampling cost money. Nobody answered Diane’s question, they just gaslit her into submission. This isn’t cute at all, don’t dare use blackness and our culture to gaslight folks to silence.
The sampling excuse does make sense. If you are sampling songs with a handful of writers on each one the result is a lot of writers. Nowadays if you contribute 2 words to a song and a melody for a line you are credited. The music industry has change drastically since Janet. As you can see from all this mess everyone wants a piece of the pie. It is what it is. Don't think they would credit 26 writers if they weren't involved. At least they had the decency to credit them to begin with. This is not something to be pressed over. At all. Would you prefer they remove the 26 writers credits so you don't have to look at it?
I think people came at Diane at an appropriate level. She threw obvious shade and then tried to Karen her way out of it with the "don't have to be mean about it". She deleted a few tweets too. Right after her tweet that said "How can there be 24 writers on a song🙄" she then tweeted " That's 23 less than are on mine 😜". She tried to flex and was very aware of what she was doing but didn't expect the backlash that she received. That's what happens when you come for people who didn't send for you.🤷
If Kelis really thinks Beyoncé and not the attorneys she pays handles whom needs to be paid and talked to to sample work…..it explains why she signed a messed up deal. Hit dogs will holler and its well known that Beyonce has a history of lying about what she wrote. Sampling is an art form, but he was being salty for no reason. Beyonce didn't even respond so he needed to mind his buisiness.
Mariah co-wrote with Diane. People still think Mariah isn’t a songwriter even though she was inducted into the songwriters hall of fame. Just putting this out there.
As a writer who also didn’t know how a hit could have 24 writers- I believe it WAS necessary for The Dream to break it down cause she did indeed try to be disrespectful and her “simple question” could cause such a feeling of inadequacy for young black writers.
I've looked at beyonce songs and she has writing credits on all her songs. I just assumed she changed one word and it qualifies as participating on the song. Which I think is whack and takes away from the actual creative writers.

THE ALBUM IS CALLED RENAISSANCE! One of the definitions of Renaissance is a revival of or renewed interest in something. Hence all the samples to be REVIVED like Kelis’ career needed to be revived but I’m sure she’ll be blackballed. And to the songwriter Dianne, as an artist, she should know what word play is and if she under the word, she should have an idea as to why all those artists were credited. And I am not a Beyoncé fan but all this drama is ridiculous.
Kelis is her own individual / free spirit . She does not care about what your talking about . She stands true to her morals and authenticity.. having your own mind and frequency means your not moved by others validations to be who you are. That’s courageous, most just follow ..she stood her ground and it was respected . Song was taken off .. 💯✨🤍she should of done nothing else but be herself ..That’s not the meaning of renaissance also . Renaissance was a error where Europe took cultures from China and the Middle East to create a new way of being . Around this time the first gun was created. It took all the culture from the old , morals truth and diminished them . Replacing the samurai with guns. Replacing the swords with guns. It devalues our ancestral cultures for the thrive of a European world and domination. Do your homework ..normally I would not respond however Do you know what your talking about do you have understanding .

See, there are are all kinds of Royalties:
•SongWriter Royalties
•Publishing Royalties
•Mechanical Royalties
Performance Royalties
Synchronization (Sync) Royalties
Print Music Royalties
The royalties for songwriters & publishing are split 50/50.
So, that means the songwriter/s....plural, all have to split the 50% share of the money for the song writing.
If there are 24 writers on a song, they have to split that 50% share 24 different ways.
It Could Be That Some Songs That Were Sampled Are Samples Of Other Songs.

Do you know the word spaz came from? And do you know what that word means? It appears like many things the USA has lost touch with its history.
It's also important to acknowledge that these are international superstar artists and terms that they use in their music may be understood differently in different countries and regions. Those disabled fans has a right to share how they feel and the artists have thr right to change the music, or not
It’s like the new R word
If you had a disabled relative you'd know it differently... My sister had cerebral palsy so spastic or "spaz" meant something different. Well said
It depends on the sample.. if the original song she sampled has 10 writers on it, she has to credit every single one of them for legal reasons.
Exactly 💯

At the end of the day it may be morally off but legally sound and when your busy getting yourself covered legally you very rarely have time for nicely ask someone you have no legal obligation to, to sample work.
@@d.dee15972 Your a lawyer? In which state did you pass the bar? And what exactly is your practice? Family, real estate, property, environmental, etc. ???
@@StephH0711 “as a attorney”….tells me everything I need to know. they are NOT an attorney 😂

I love how beyonce handled stuff. Rarely actually speaking, just a clear, direct action love that lol.
I guess, sometimes it’s appropriate other times an apology would he better. You know how much $ she spends doing this rather than apologizing which is free.
@@DeLaTr0ll kelis problem is with pharrell and the neptune’s.. that song was for brittney spears first, not her.. she doesn’t own the song, the neptunes do
@@tairalowe998 exactly. The music business is just that, BUSINESS!
The part you left out is that Beyonce won't be allowing Chad and Pharrell to make money from the music that Kelis wrote...it looks like Beyonce sided with Kelis and didn't allow them to profit
Thank you
She didn’t write anything which is why she doesn’t have rights to the song. She’s have gotten a song writers credit and thus would have made money off of her songs. By her own admission she’s made nothing and legally can’t do squat because she didn’t write anything. That’s why she resorts to mess like this. Beyoncé got rid of a pest before it could infest her home. Ol girl doesn’t even have a project to promote just grasping for attention on the internet 🙄🤦🏽♀️
@@dinkyboss she did write it
@@dinkyboss Whaaaat are you talking about Kelis did write On all both of her first albums they just have ownership of it because she signed a messy contract deal
If she was really w k she would’ve hit her up or gave her a notice
Diane said what she said. I wish people would stop making everything about race. She is a tenured writer, with an opinion about writing. I hate that she cowered in her comment. I saw her point. Let's not pretend they haven't stolen credit they didn't earn. I.e. the issue Kelis needs to have with Pharell.
As far as the Dream, hit dogs holler.
The bee hive is the only group of glorified internet bullies allowed... but okay.
👋
And Diane wrote "I Learned From The Best" for Whitney !!! ❤ @06:42 "I Turn To You" for Xtina Aguilera. And Diane wrote for Aaliyah, TLC, En Vogue, Aretha Franklin, Mariah, Britney, Tina Turner ...
Exactly, she is a true lengend and the Dream had some nerve with his dusty azz. He could never have the impact on music as broadly as she did. Hit dogs will holler and its well known that Beyonce has a history of lying about what she wrote. Sampling is an art form, but he was being salty for no reason. Beyonce didn't even respond so he needed to mind his buisiness.
Also 'I look to you' for Whitney & 'I don't wanna miss a thing' for Aerosmith. She's iconic
Mariah co-wrote with Diane. People still think Mariah isn’t a songwriter even though she was inducted into the songwriters hall of fame. Just putting this out there.
@@elizabethdalgliesh6085 Wait she wrote the Aerosmith song??!! She is more than a legend, their music is so iconoc.
@@applaudent2945 I knew Mariah was a writer, her pen game is strong. Jazmine Sullivan writes her music and many others.
@@anahernandez4043 I don’t understand what the hoopla is about. Beyonce is a vocalist. Her talent is to sing and that’s what she does authentically. Songwriting is just a plus to your credentials, it’s really not a must. Does anyone ever get on Cardi B for literally not writing any of her music as a *rapper?* Where you SHOULD be writing??? Come on?
@Day right because even though she said she wasn't trying to be mean why did she put this 🙄 emoji at the end of the sentence, and she did mention beyonce's name, she changed it with the upmost quickness when she was getting attacked by the beehive. Like I always say yt ppl always act like they don't know when they are being mean/rude/disrespectful, when they know in fact the are.
@@UngiftedRoses right. Everyone has their lane…ppl mad that Beyoncé knows her lane. She could sang.
As a writer please learn the business side of the industry.
It means taking others way of being , taking what you want from it and making it into your liking .A colonial mindset .People really go along with things that folks throw out there wow . No more thinkers only followers.
