  • How can you check if the charge controller you've got your eye on is really MPPT? I look at an auction, the packaging, the hardware and eventually I plug it in.

    Thank you for checking this out. I just recently got one for my camper, and wondered about the inductor as well. this gadget really is a small, light package. I tested another one which came with a panel I bought, and got results similar to yours. The display on the other one was very hard to read as well, at least this one looks good and is easy to read. One of the parts on the board where the USB plugs are does look like a small inductor, but it would not be enough to do the power conversion job for battery charging, although it probably is enough for the 12 to 5 volt USB conversion. My guess on that huge drop is that it's a waste of money to put panels in series unless you are setting up a 24 volt system. I confess that I did buy it because of the MPPT claim, and did not think I would lose too much if it isn't because of the low price. It works, and looks nice, but they probably should not be calling it MPPT. I installed a different type which actually can boost current, because of the limited space on the roof of my pickup camper. I can't just add another panel to make up for the lack of boost. I am keeping my "perfect suitor" as a spare in case the one I am using now quits. Thumbs up for your time, thanks.

    Good tutorial & review. I know next to nothing about solar controllers, but boning-up as I intend to setup a kit on a new shed build. I've heard MPPT works better in cloudy conditions, but trying to weigh-up costs v benefits before buying. This really helped me. Cheers!

    • @AdamWelchUK
      @AdamWelchUK  3 года назад +2

      In all honesty I’d suggest putting more money into panels rather than controllers - unless you’re very short on roof space. MPPT is great at maximising what you have in good conditions. But if you’re not using it when it’s being generated I think the better investment is in panels.

    • @ottofumbler7267
      @ottofumbler7267 3 года назад

      @@AdamWelchUK Thanks. Good advice. I think a couple of 50W panels should suffice for my needs.
      Not planning on using an inverter, as I can use an extension cable from the house for large power draw needs. Just looking to hook up a security camera, some LEDs and a radio for occasional use, and power everything from an old 70Ah SLA car battery that's still in good condition. Might invest in a decent leisure battery down the line.
      Plenty of shed roof space for panels (approx 10ft x 4ft, south facing). The shed is around 35m from the mains board under the house, a patio, and garden, so digging and installing SWA cable was going to be too time consuming and uneconomical for my needs.

    Thank you for this! You definitely saved me some time and headaches. 😂😂 I was about to try one of these out, but right before confirming my payment, I noticed the heat sync looked like a decoy. I realized I should see if anyone did a teardown! What’s also funny is some of the genuine MPPT controller manufacturers show pictures of this inductor inside (and the PVMs I’ve looked at never bother showing the inside). This product’s video has a thumbnail of the back panel opened, yet all you see are those little pieces of conductive tape and not the inductor! Then you play the video, they don’t even show the inside (including the heat sync taped portion from the thumbnail ). They really went the extra mile to try to deceive. 😂
    Have you found a good, genuine MPPT controller that’s cheap yet?

    I purchased a 70 amp version of this then found discrepancies online so I contacted the seller and then refused delivery so it went back to the supplier for a refund. I then purchased a EPEVER Tracer BN 40 amp SCC. Yes it was 5 times the price but it works better than any previously owned SCC which were all PWM advertised as MPPT.
    You get what you pay for.

    However, the timers might make it worth it. See if you can hook it up to the shed and use it to turn xmas lights on at night and off. No need to even put a solar panel. However if you had a 60 cell panel, it would be operating near mppt voltage anyways. I wish they would not put pulses on an off, just hit the voltage and off. But I guess that is for lead-acid. Even if each panel had their own controller you might get more power if a bird poos on your array and breaks the circuit.

    With all those parts inside there I'm wondering if you couldn't add a diode and the coil on the panel side and it would work like a buck converter. Somebody took what could have been done with a few transistor and a zener diode used a microprocessor to do the job.

    Adam, I have a 12v Application, to run some FANS in my Greenhouse. The 240W Solar Panels I have, are OCV 37.48V and MPV of 29.48. mMy questions is can I use a 48/36volt Step Down Module, which is rated at 12V 20A @ 240 an produce Direct Power to the FANS, or should ......tie in a 20 PWM off of the 12volt side of the Step Down Module? What would be your recommendation?
    What is the Cheapest 20A MPPT that could work in this application. As ALWAYS your videos are AWESOME ! Any Advise will be appreciated. THANKS

    Hi Adam, thanks for another informative video.
    I have found that there are many charge controllers which are essentially a buck converter which (maybe that why they are called "PWM"?). Since buck converters should have an energy storage device there should be PWM controllers with an inductor. Hence, the presence on an induction should not be a factor for categorization in my opinion.
    weird

    • @egbertegberts5384
      @egbertegberts5384 Год назад

      You're mistaken. PWM chargers don't need power conversion to work. These type of chargers basically connect the solar panel directly to the battery at a certain interval and varying duty cycle. That's about it. If a charger doesn't have a reasonable inductor it can't be a mppt charger as this type of chargers definitely need power conversion.

    • @cs8425
      @cs8425 Год назад

      @@egbertegberts5384 I had asked the question a long time back when I knew little about these things wanted to clarify. I know better now. Incase you still want to answer the question (for someone else who might be reading it), the question was: If there was a charge controlled with a buck converter without MPPT ability would you be able to tell them apart just by looking for the inductor.

    It looks similar to the tracer A & AN controllers. Have you checked the tracer 60, 80, & 100amp AN controllers?? Only thing is if I'm spending over $400 for a controller I'd probably spend a bit more and get the midnite classic150! For about $575, I try staying about 10amps under the rating on the tracers. I could use a single high current controller. Great video.

    Good video. Thanks. I use this perfect suitor for my two 12v (18v) solar panels in parallel supplying to 12v battery. Is it better if I use those two solar panels in serial to make 24v (38v) to my same 12v battery? Will it charge more current? Thanks for your quick reply.

      No. Keep them in parallel, this unit cant DC to DC current pump so will waste the extra voltage.

      Rob Mc Thanks for your advise. I have connected my 3S battery pack to this controller. But facing a problem. 3X4.2V =12.6V. But this controller has a minimum overcharge setting is 12.9V. Will this 0.3v over setting create a problem?

    If it doesn't have Toroid coils inside it's a pwm, I remember I bought those cheap "sun yoba" They stated it was "mppt" But obviously was pwm lol

    If you connected them in parallel, would the MPPT point of 17V be closer to 12V and you would get higher current ?
