    Great experiment! I was wondering if anything would happen. I know vhd spins slower then ced but still cool to know that they are definitely encoded different

    I could make a very long and drawn out reply as to why this would not and could not ever work, but instead I will mention this; the two formats are mutually incompatible and that means there is a zero percent chance either one will work in the other.

    @databits --- Since CED and VHD are just really advanced records, would they be readable by a laser stylus like ELP uses in their laser turntable?

      I'm sure the signal on the discs is completely different for a start. The CED player is expecting to see a compatible signal from the disc. Which of course is not there with a VHD disc, resulting in a blank screen.

      @@pablorai769 I'm sure it would give exactly the same results, a blank screen. The thing is CED and VHD are very different, not only would the recorded signals be incompatible. CED uses a spiral groove that the stylus follows, just like a record. VHD uses concentric ring grooves and the stylus is tracked electronically. In fact they're so different JVC didn't need to pay any patent royalties to RCA.
      BTW Technology Connections on YT did a very in-depth series about CED, and how VHD came about, that's well worth watching.

    There is no way it could have worked, and the only outcome is a damaged VHD disk: CED has grooves to drive the stylus like a conventional record while in VHD the stylus is electronically locked to the signal spiral more like a CD. It is like playing a 33 rpm disc into an old 78 rpm mechanical turntable

    • @databits
      @databits 2 года назад +4

      VHD disc was not damaged. The tracking force from the stylus is not enough to scratch anything.

    I need to find a cheap source for cartridges just got a CED player and it spins the discs up nicely and puts the stylus down properly but I get nothing at all I’ve tried different discs with the same results it outputs rf signal but the led display never puts a number up it’s an early rca player I’d love to get it working looks brand new almost like it never played any discs if I had a known working stylus I could see if that’s the problem or if there’s another fault with the player
