- With millions of people following stay-at-home orders, those with a need for speed can’t seem to resist the allure of empty highways. Rush hour is non-existent, and lots of “crazy COVID drivers” are putting the pedal to the metal and ignoring the speed limit during the pandemic. Inside Edition sent a team of investigative reporters to New York City and Long Island where they clocked people going as much as 50 miles an hour over the speed limit, along with plenty of reckless driving. #InsideEdition
What sucks about driving is that most people see themselfs as a great driver... until they get into an accident.

I routinely did 120 before the pandemic. Lmao. Just don’t be crazy switching lanes and not too many cars on the road. It’s pretty safe as long as you pay attention and you vehicle is well maintained with decent tires. I go faster now.

I think everyone is well aware of the fact that many drivers can be caught speeding on the highways. This isn’t limited to just the pandemic. However, I also personally believe it could be because there is less traffic nowadays, some drivers may feel more inclined to start speeding. The temptation may be stronger for some people.

Just because you speed doesn’t mean you get into accidents. My mom drives like a snail and she has been into 2 accidents. I drive with “passion” and have never been in an accident. I also drive more frequently than my mom too.
notice how the accident rates have remained unchanged. The real problem is people blocking traffic by chilling in the passing lanes. No excuse for 100 mph but speed is not the main safety issue on the roads contrary to popular belief.
actually accident rates got significantly worse over the pandemic, but not on freeways. it's our stroads and poorly designed streets that got worse. previously, stroads and city streets were so clogged with traffic that people couldn't get going fast enough to kill each other. now, they can, so the dangers of driveway spam have become very clear to see. it's true that the biggest threat to highway safety is left lane hogs, and also their counterparts who drive too fast in the right lane

I'm an essential employee and I typically have an hour+ commute... this is the first time I can do it in 35 minutes. I'm gunna keep speeding until I can't. I still properly use my signal. I try not to weave or ride up on people.. but best believe if I can go 90, I'm gunna go 90.

Perhaps we need dedicated biking and walking zones and just let cars go the speed they were designed to go. Make the main roads faster and more efficient so people don't speed on the side roads when the main ones get clogged up. We also need more low cost housing near economic hubs so people don't have to drive so far and fast.

I found myself going way too fast as well, just on local roads. It was as if I forgot how to drive.

If you drive on the highway, stay on right or middle lane. Don't hogg the left lane.
Yet, still managed to get a ticket for going 52 in a 25 zone. The area I was in, changed speed limits 4 times in less than half a mile. The highway I was on has a limit of 55.

honestly if you can go 52 in a 25 clearly the issue is the design of the 25. first of all, 25 mile per hour speed limits shouldn't exist, that's on the lower end of stroad territory. second of all, it shouldn't be physically possible to reach 52 on a city street, that should be for open roads only
