In Ohio we call those hedge apples.I think the proper name is Osage orange. Supposedly great to deter spiders. But we tried it once and a spider was sitting on one. So may be a myth.
Interesting tree, I did a little research into the Osage orange. We called them monkey balls. "Monkey ball is a Yinzer term. A Pittsburgh phrase for a tree that used to feed Wooly Mammoths" Although, I'm not from Pittsburgh. 😁
