  • This virtually unknown and catchy tune has a very Beatlesque flavor to it. The kind of song that if you listen 3 times in a row it will be stuck in your head all day long. If you want that.
    Robert Steven "Adrian" Belew (born December 23rd, 1949) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. A multi-instrumentalist primarily known as a guitarist and singer, he is noted for his unusual approach to the instrument, his playing cited as fluid, expressive, and often resembling "animal noises or mechanical rumblings".
    Widely recognized as an "incredibly versatile [guitar] player", Belew is perhaps best known for his tenure as guitarist and frontman in the progressive rock group King Crimson between 1981 and 2009. He has also released nearly twenty solo albums for Island Records and Atlantic Records in various styles. In addition, Belew has been a member of the intermittently active band the Bears, and fronted GaGa in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
    Belew has also worked extensively as a session, guest, and touring musician, including periods with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, and Nine Inch Nails, as well as contributing to hit singles by Paul Simon, Tom Tom Club, and others.
    From 'pop sided', released 2019.
    Someone reviewed;
    'An 11 track album which if anything is varied and shares along the way some of his most hidden influences like Paul McCartney and the Beach Boys and the not so hidden like David Byrne (for whom he has collaborated), blended in with his own Pop and non-Pop vision and also of course his King Crimson kinship.
    The real deal of this release, as told, is found in its variety which somehow frames its better tracks and makes the not so good tracks look not so bad, because although it will have been great for it to be flawless as some compositions may point out, it is not, it is only very well produced'.
    '“Times We Live In” could have been credited to Lennon/McCartney/Belew, as the music reminds one of “Rocky Racoon” from The Beatles (aka The White Album). But the lyrics are pure Adrian, as he contemplates the loss of civility in society, and how he has come to feel horribly out of place because he insists on maintaining his. More than a few of us can relate. The theme is similar in “everybody’s sitting,” where Belew ponders the relative absence of engagement by people in modern society. What might seem like so much grumpiness is really a case of genuine concern.
    Music fact of the day; Lyricist Bernie Taupin wrote the ballad ‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight’ about the night he stopped Elton John from committing suicide with a gas oven.

    I would add early Kinks (Well Respected Man eg.) type stuff. Seems like some of Ray Davies social commentary sound may have been borrowed for effect. Interesting and definitely relevant these days.
