My issue with snail mucin is that thus far we've only been relying on the companies' word that it is cruelty free. CosRX, for example, didn't allow reporters to film in the facilities where they work with the snails and extract the mucin, and they've declined to comment on occasions where journalists probed with further questions (see 'Ethics of Snail Mucin' by Gaby Del Valle) I think the lack of transparency is concerning. Extraordinary claims, like that of an animal byproduct being derived without any harm to the animal, require extraordinary evidence; especially given that historically, the process of extracting snail mucin involved crushing and boiling the snails, and the evidence of these new techniques' cruelty-free status lies in the details that companies are not sharing with us.

Yup. This is a case where people want so badly to believe their beloved product comes from a good place, when we all know the reality is very likely not that. It’s going to come out later that the snails weren’t “loved into secreting” and people are going to be like 😳.

    • @alliecinder

@@Jessicalovesmichael Yeah... Given the historical precedent of the treatment of animals in the beauty industry, I'm gonna need more than the company's word.

I wouldn't have liked snail mucin at your age, either. But after menopause, my skin went from an oil slick to crazy dry, flaking desert status. I mean, I never even used a moisturizer until I was 50 because they all broke me out. But now this is one of the few products that make me wake up with plump, hydrated skin. I just appreciate the fact that you reviewed them even though it's definitely not needed on your skin type 👍 Love your channel! 😘

Hi Rob I find the cosrx snail essence very hydrating, unlike HA serums that give me rebound dryness (usually sodium hyaluronate based). As I use it after toner and before serums etc there is no sticky finish on the skin at the end. I do think perhaps it may suit drier skin better as it isso hydrating.
My understanding about the mucin itself is that unhappy/stressed snails excrete a secretion that can't be used on the skin. Therefore they have to keep them happy and well fed to get the good quality excretion - making it cruelty free. It's not entirely their natural habitat, but many creatures are happy out with an entirely natural habitat eg dogs, cats and of course chickens lol.
I'm not convinced about the anti aging benefits etc, but it is very hydrating and accepted by my skin far better than the salt form of HA in most products. It has a slightly gooey texture, but I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me. As with any ingredient not everyone will like it or may even be grossed out by the thought - that's fine and there are multiple other hydrating ingredients available. I switch between the snail essence and a beta glucan serum. When you consider it's a decent size bottle and can be used as a serum, the cosrx is pretty good value overall. Best wishes.

The Cosrx Snail essence is a pretty good base to use before other serums and that is indeed how essences are used in Korea. If not applying any serums before a moisturiser I like to apply a quick spritz of the Cosrx Centella alcohol free toner which is very light and takes away any potential remaining tacky feeling. Cosrx is not a bougee brand but effective.

I really like snail mucin in products, I’ve used a sample or the cosrx snail essence and when I first used it on damp skin it kinda went a little sticky but the next day I tried it on dry skin and it worked so much better, it glided over my skin and soaked in really well, I loved it, I’m using up some of my other toners before I order a full size, I also really loved the beauty of joseon repair serum. I would also like to say I received my MAS order this week and I loved the little hand written card that was in with my order it was such a nice touch so thank you! After 2 nights of using your serum and moisturiser my skin felt soooo soft and smooth the next day so really impressed so far! thank you again lots of love xxx

I do love snail mucin as a nice alternative to hyaluronic acid actually, as I feel that it absorbs better, although there definitely is HA in snail mucin itself. I find it calming as well, where HA is not. I too like to use it alongside other ingredients or in more complex serum formulations, like the cosrx dual radiance essence or the iunik black snail. I do prefer beta glucan to snail however.

I really like using the cosrx snail mucin power essence! I still layer hydrating toners (almost 7 skins, but more like 3 skins) as I’ve found it helps tremendously for my dehydrated/oily/acne prone skin. I use it as the last of the toners for an extra boost of hydration. I didn’t even know it was supposed to have some anti-aging benefits and have always used it like people would use a HA serum.

I just ordered the Cosrx brand. I can't wait to try it! Another thing I've been doing is applying green tea extract as a toner. The brand I found on Amazon only has green tea and glycerine, which is just another humectant used in skin care. I wet a cotton round, then apply a few drops of the extract. I don't use it full strength because it will be sticky. So far my skin really likes it, and I plan on using it before I add snail mucin for added antioxidant/uv protection.

I have combo-dry skin (emphasis on the dry in the winter) and CosRX SM is a staple in my nighttime routine, which consists of 5-7 products. I was first introduced to SM via Korean sheet masks and loved it, but immediately switched when I found it in serum form to reduce waste. I’ve definitely noticed improved hydration and plumping, but my favorite thing about it is that it is one of only 2 products (excluding moisturizers) that doesn’t further irritate my skin when it’s REALLY going through it (think, extreme chapping from trips to the desert, sunburn, etc.). I actually think *because* the actives are at such a low concentration, it’s a really easy product to integrate into most routines for dry skin. Just my thoughts! :)

I find that the few snail mucin products I have tried are very hydrating with some emollient properties as well so it's better than many of the hyaluronic acid serums once you learn to use it. However, I do not necessarily go out my to use snail mucin products and I would rather spend my money for my retinoids and sunscreens.

  • @LauraLVTGW

The snail mucin is also used as a defense mechanism. If they were harmed, the snail secrets a toxin into the mucin, making it unusable. These snails are treated very well in order for the company to get a safe, quality product.

Then I saw Odile Monod’s snail mucin debunked video about the percentage of snail in products can be a snail mucin filtrate that truly doesn’t tell you how much actual snail is in the product. So I’m a bit sad. There are too many really wonderful products out there to settle for just an ok product. I find it overall the most hydrating, which is why I use it at night, but can sometimes be too much for my oily/combo skin, and it takes the longest to sink in. I think it's the most reparative, meaning any open blemishes seem to diminish more than with the other. Definitely brightens skin tone. On a slimy scale of 1-10, it's a 12. Cult favorite, but definitely not for everyone.
The Mizon All in One is by far the lightest. Only slightly hydrating, not the best for drier skin types, it sinks in immediately and is perfect for daytime use during hot summer months. On the slimy scale, maybe a 2.5. Gives an noticeably brighter tone to the skin with moderate healing properties.
I love the Mizon Black. It's thicker than the other Mizon and provides much better hydration and can be used morning or night. Slimy scale 1.5; if you didn't know it was a snail cream, you'd never guess there was mucin was in it. I find it falls in between the other two creams, the best of both worlds. Plus it has lots of plant extracts/ingredients so you get those benefits, too. One good thing about this one is that there is a travel size tube you can try out first over at YesStyle.
I'm definitely obsessed with snail mucin, so I hope you can find one that works for you! ❤️

At the moment I do use both the Benton Snail and Bee essence and toner, because they combine two disgusting ingredients snail mucin and bee venom 😂 The Benton essence is formulated with an anti irritation objective thanks to the botanical ingredients included in the formula.
3:19 It is great that you went beyond your mental blocages because what about honey 🍯 which is basically flower sugar disgested by bees. 🤣 The properties of honey comes from enzymes that are in the stomach of bees. Propolis is also a bee product.
(This comment is totally unfair because it comes from a French guy who has been raised eating snails cooked in butter for festive family dinners 🤣🤣🤣)
But is Snail mucin really cruelty free ? I am not so sure. I mean that’s an industry and we know how industries treat animals. So I still wonder if I will be repurchasing this product. After all we vote with our payment cards. And Bee venom is probably even worst regarding cruelty free issues.

I thought Vichy allows animal testing where required by law (in order to sell the products).

Hi hun, this is a really good point and they have confirmed as a brand they will be moving to entirely cruelty free in the next 4 months by using the workarounds which China now allow to circumvent animal testing... This is not perfect but its a step forward for sure... sending you lots of love xxxxx

Hey Rob, I'm NOT going to put snail mucin (slime) on my face. Slugs, snails are all the same to me--slimy, disgusting things which I really do not want on my body. Just sayin'. Sending lots of love ~ Paula

Haha I am in total agreement with you Paula its not something which I think should be on the skin and the mental picture of the snails is not a good one lol... The chickens love to find one in the garden though ... sending you lots of love xxxxx
