Secrets of the Gibson Skylark - What Would I Do with $1M? Two Gibson Skylarks at the Same Time, Man.

  • In this video we'll service and modify two 60's Gibson GA5 Skylarks. One is an earlier Crestline GA-5 and the other is a later GA-5T with tremolo. The GA5T contains a "tone sucking network" or Sprague couplet for tone shaping. That'll get the boot and we'll tweak the rest of the circuit as well to be more friendly to single coil guitars and break up better when cranked. In the end, we'll have a more versatile pair of amplifiers hopefully.

I used to gig with two Skylark GA-5Ts. I've owned 5 or so and still own my first one. They're Champ-killers. When I gigged with both, I would send a stereo signal out to them and do a ping-pong delay. They sound amazing mic'd.
Also, those are not normally referred to as "chrome-dome" knobs. They're called "reflectors."

    • @ashleyhilliard4971

    • @baroqueguitarist5673

So two of these together in stereo were loud enough to cut over a drummer ? Could handle a medium size venue ? And mic'ed for larger ones ? I've always wanted to try gigging with two Gibson eh 150 amps or two blackface princeton's or vibrochamps. I love the tone of old tube amps but after having surgery I can't carry heavy tube amps around anymore. Would you recommend using two smaller tube amps in stereo ? Did you run into any issues doing that live ?

i disagree that they are champ killers they are made to not sound great with
fenders unless you change it.change it & they are quality but very different from a champ for me but if you use a gibson guitar they sound much better.so anyone wanting to get one remember to change the cap set up if you want to use it with a fender guitar as shown by the man who fixed them great post peace...

Was there a change in grid voltage many years ago in the US where they bumped from 110 to 120 or something like that? I know some people with old amps like that who need to use them on a variac or step down of some sort to keep from them being over volted on the power.

  • @andrewgillis8572

Brad how about, set the grille & speaker flat on its face, get hold of spkr wire, then lower the empty cabinet face down onto that, and flip - so the baffle board is lying in place & speaker wire protruding under the cabinet edge - then test your tone (albeit in omni-directional mode.)
PS Sonny Rollins has a great rave-up called G-Man - I bet they know.

Hi there I recently restored one of these i have had for 25 years! Did the caps, noise was gone! Did the power cord change and removed the death cap. Replaced torn original speaker with a Jensen C10Q sounds great, this was with the help of a previous video you did on this model. I left the tone sucker in for now, it is bright but the speaker calmed it down (was using a 1028 legend). Now my question is what values did you use on the capacitor and the resistor after debugging the noise? Also next up is 67 GA5T have you done one of these? Love all your videos, thx!!

The English Gibson Family crest features 3 geese or possibly swans with the motto ' Recte et Fideliter ' (Honest and Faithful ) which could be conspired as ' true fidelity ' . If your going to rip off a family crest and motto for clean sounding amps , that would be a good one. I've seen those 3 leg 2 layer mica caps made by Lemco in UK radio stuff . Good as a free 2 leg silver mica cap . Lemco used red too....

Removing that Sprague Couplet might have loaded down the V1 first preamp tube to prevent it from oscillating since it had so much gain on it to drive the Sprague Couplet?

I just purchased a GA-5T that has a inspection date of Nov. 1966 on one of the cabinet components. I watched this video and another you make back in June of 2106 and from what I can tell everything is original on mine including the "tone sucking network". Do you have a parts list of what you replaced on the GA-5T in both videos and would you have these parts available for sell? Also, when I turn the unit on it has a very loud hum even with the volume turned down. Is that caused by the filter caps?
And...., Great Videos! Great work! I learned a lot but am still very much out of my element. I just want my amp to sound as great as the ones you tweaked.

Little little late on the reply but yeah I would start by changing those filter caps for sure because if their original they're toast that will probably get rid of your homebody and you could have some other suspect caps in the amp also all the old paper electrolytics should be replaced then check your tubes good luck buddy those are great sounding amps!

I have a ga5 skylark bought new in Christmas 1963 but I think it’s a 1960 model because all of the tubes (still original) are from 1960. Is there any way, by serial number , schematic or whatever to confirm what model year it is ? That you know of. Thanks.
I agree that it sounds best on humbuckers but this was sold as a package with an es-225 with p90s ,and cables a strap a box of a dozen sets of strings a box of picks etc for $400.00 as a Christmas student special and it sounds great with p90s also. Very thin sounding on my 1963 Jaguar and even worse with 1996 strat ultra with lace sensors. But with p90s and/or humbuckers it rocks , my n-255 custom has both and they pair very well

Sold my Skylark Crestline GA-5T a few years ago during a gear purge and I still have sellers regret. It was no where near as minty as that one though!

They are a good platform for mods if you like doing that sort of thing.
