  • Agility Robotics CEO Peggy Johnson sees opportunity in an American labor shortage. The company's humanoid robots have already been put to work commercially. Johnson doesn't think they'll displace human workers, she tells Forbes, but rather make them more productive.
Peggy Johnson has forged a unique “over 50” career: She was Satya Nadella’s first hire when he took over Microsoft in 2014 and, from 2020 until last year, she ran augmented reality company Magic Leap. Today, Johnson helms Agility Robotics (total funding: $180 million to-date), which makes human-like robots to work in America’s warehouses. “In the logistics area alone, there are over a million jobs that are going unfilled,” she says. “It makes sense to put a humanoid robot into these spots.”

There are a lot of people who only do and are capable of doing structured tasks. So robots will replace them

So basically how to replace low skills individuals who can only have repetitive jobs.

Robotics companies eliminate low-skilled jobs; AI companies eliminate high-skilled jobs, basically.

This will definitely replace jobs, it won't just shift the jobs humans do. Maybe in the short-term yes, but eventually ALL jobs (especially in the factory) will be replaced.

@@metamind095 Not when our economy depends on people having income from their jobs. You can't automate your way to prosperity forever. Eventually, unemployment will reach critical mass, and the companies trying to automate their way to prosperity, will have no one to sell to.

@metamind095 Capitalism requires a consumer base that requires paychecks, which currently requires jobs. We need to base human worth on something other than labor like the wealthy do with universal inheritance.

So…. We are calling jobs “tasks” now. Avoiding the truth by colorful nomenclature doesn’t change reality. Let’s say you have a warehouse full of people. Exactly how many of these people will be chosen to manage the bots? And in the near future will this be necessary?

Ms Johnson said, "ROI (return on investment) based on 2-years of an employee's total compensation package." She then stumbled when asked about these robots taking other jobs in the future.
How much more do we have to hear before we will believe the intent is to replace people? I'd say nothing more.
Of course, if an American company is not doing this, a company from somewhere else will.
At least in countries where human employees make less money, they won't be replaced by robots as soon because robots will be too expensive to replace them. Sheesh!

There are orderly robots like the Robear in Japan that can safely pick up and move patients, and several other model's in use for various use .
Other teams like Hanson Robotics have been developing Assistant Robotics such as Grace The Humanlike Nursing Assistant can scan to discern temperature, pulse and respiration. She has an extensive sophisticated programming platform

Didn't even ask if it would pop in Ep. 2 or 3 of The Bear and catch the giant container of reduction when it popped out of the girl's hands, or was reinsured to be good around people, or you have to painstakingly describe it and have painstaking meetings to post changes, or what. Maintenance stuff to keep the shoulders in service, why it's ROI if they're in the middle there, all those things are kind of sitting there unanswered? 'I loved all of the sciences.' Then talks HS & Bachelors' degree. Ran the Tokyo Marathon, wow! Are they teaching 'Digits' cleaning kill floors in abattoir?
