Best review on these 2 guitars that I have seen yet. Love the tone of both of them. I just purchased the 110e last night... Either way I couldn't have gone wrong!
I have and play both sizes all the time. What you hear in this video is more like what you'd listen in a "real" environment when you play both sizes. The GA size has a more present midrange, while the dreadnought, COMPARED to the Grand Auditorium, will have more present highs and lows. I use light gauge strings for the GA and mediums for the dreadnought, which brings a very different playability from both. In this video, as a listener, not as a player, the 114 brings more of a pleasure; but let's keep in mind that we're only having a small experience and we'd need to listen to them in different scenarios.
@@tearitloosetearitloose4670 I bought one about a month ago and I’m still loving it, great guitar with a great sound. Only thing is it would be nice to upgrade and get it with the cut out.
Both such great guitars! The 114 seems to have more low end than the 110 which gives it a richer sound rather than a brighter sound. Choosing guitars can really depend on the player's preference. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I've been wanting a new guitar for a while but didn't know what brand or style to get. I decided on Taylor but didn't know what style, because I didn't understand the difference. I'm more of a heavier strummer, and I decided I'm getting the 110e dreadnought.
Just got my 110 at GC. I tried several 110's and 114's they had in stock. The 110 was the winner for tone but not by much. I could see getting a 114 for the smaller body. I feel these Taylors compare favorably to the low end Martins.
I love them both!!! And they are good for different styles. That being said... I own a 314ce not a 310... Would deffinitly consider the 110 though too...
That’s the natural difference between orchestra or auditorium guitars vs dreadnoughts. The string to string separation on a dread is rarely as clear and articulate Mostly the EQ of the orchestra or auditorium shame has rounded mids while dreadnoughts and jumbos are more scooped, with thicker bottom end and more pronounced trebles. I do like both guitars and I’d have both if I had the spare cash. But as I already have a jumbo an 112 or 114 would be cool
One of the best comparison reviews on RUclips. The only problem is, the comparison between the 114 and the 110 Taylor acoustic changed my mind, and I won’t be buying the 110,that is for sale locally. Because I liked the 114 sound a little better... Great review, head to head direct comparison of the two guitars.
I bought a 110 years ago and loved it. At the $600 price level it's hard to beat. A $300 Yamaha was the only thing that even came close. But I was left with the nagging feeling I should have bought the 110e. It's hard to gig out our even play with friends without the amplification. (My friends have drums and trumpets!). So I finally broke down and purchased a pickup. I installed an LR Baggs M1 Active soundhole ($150-$200) pickup which required me to drill through the body of the guitar to install the strapjack. I could not be more pleased. The M1 Active pickup is exactly that - quite active. The instrument saw new life. Every little nuance that used to get drowned out now becomes a part of the show - string scratches, body percussive knocks, tapping, etc. Not all styles will accommodate themselves to this arrangement but it works for me. So I'm glad I bought the cheaper 110 now because I was able to experiment with customizing it. I would never do that on a Taylor 800, for example...
BTS That’s exactly what I would use on a 110 that I already have. If I had an 800 definitely not. Would only mike that or trade for another all solid hi end with electronics.
Thank you, I have been looking to hear the difference between these two sizes, even if I was looking at a different make. Your comparisons don't seem to have problems that could be attributed to the making of the video. The guitar I have been looking at is a Grand Auditorium (only) and I think you have convinced me to go with it.
We're splitting hairs here IMO...these Taylors are so nice you really have to spend time to determine which is best for YOU. I bought a Martin a few days ago, stopped in yesterday and played a Taylor, was blown away..took my Martin in to A/B and they each have their strengths...needless to say I bought the Taylor 110CE Cutaway as well, I just couldn't decide. lol
Quite surprised that the bigger 110 is quieter than the 114, and a tonal difference of 'briing' (110) vs 'braang' (114) - to my ears, the 114 is more open and even across the frequencies while the 110 might fill a more narrow spectrum in an ensemble or recording context - congratulations on a really good A-B test, with repeated examples showing that the differences couldn't 'just' be down to mic placement.
They both sound great but keep in mind that we are listening to them on a computer. There are MANY variables as to how they sound recorded and over speakers ( my speakers sound different than yours, etc.... ) Need to hear them both live to really form an opinion.
Wagner Dante well the thing is that in my country there's no guitar center nor place where they sell Taylor so I'm watching videos and deciding, so can you give me some advice? The 110 sounds much lighter than I expected.
I played at 110 once and I remember that I liked the sound, but for a while and I do not remember right the tone, this day I wanted to test the 114 but he had not in the store so I could not to compare.
I know that if I bought either 110 or 114 I would love it, but you know for that price is an investment and I'm trying to choose the correct, thanks anyway.
can i suggest that you use the pick up and speaker inorder to determine the sound in the speaker,, i noticed that you all use condenser mic for most of the demo..... thanks
114e is the sleeper guitar of the decade. Modern design- the grand concert body shape and bracing raise the bar on how an acoustic can sound, in my opinion. Don't let on to Taylor, but in my opinion also, the lowest model 114 sounds BETTER than a 314! I think this is because of the lovely minimalist varnish finish they use for the 100 series, and the cool laminated 'bowl shaped' back that allows them to do away with any bracing on the back. Revolutionary in some ways, I think. This is a 'Rolls Royce' with 'Toyota' emblems on it. :)
The difference is smaller than I expected, but I also was surprised to hear so much more bright treble from the 110 vs the distinct mids from the 114. As someone who doesn’t know much about guitar construction, I expected the opposite, and I do like how even yet distinct the GA sound is. That said, I own a 110e and have zero regrets. Still a great sounding guitar, and I somehow snagged one like-new for only $400. It’s not worth it to move laterally unless I find a similar deal.
And the 14 which means grand auditorium body shape is Taylor's Swiss army guitar so they say, it performs great in all styles but if you are a heavy strummer and like brighter tone then get a dreadnought. I finger pick a lot so that's why I leaned more towards the 114 and I like a warmer tone as well, everyone is different, also don't pay attention to those who say Taylor is better than martin or martin is better than Taylor, everyone's ear is different and everyone's styles are different I own a Taylor now and love Taylor but later down the road I'll most likely own a martin as well, maybe even a maton. That's the beauty of guitar.
I don't mean to be pedantic, but it's only the 4 which designates the body shape. The 1 stands for a softwood top. For example, a 324 model Taylor would be: 3 series, 2 for hardwood top (like Koa or Mahogany) and 4 for the Grand Auditorium shape.
No you're absolutely right! I just read the first line of your comment and was like wooow and realized how dumb I looked considering I own a Taylor. Thank you for the correction! Everyone disregard my statement this gentleman is absolutely correct. Haha sorry for the slip up.
Brandon Smith That's okay, I only read up on the numbering system yesterday. I wanted to understand the code and what that means in terms of specs, without always having to read the spec list.
As much I as like brightness in a guitar, I would choose the 114 because it has a rounder and more balanced tone and would feel more comfortable to play on. (I’ve never been comfortable playing Dreadnoughts)
got my 110ce yesterday and this was the last video i watched before the purchase. my eyes wanted 114 but the store only have 110 andidontevencare lol very happy me 😁
I don't think brighter, I hear it as the 114 being more midrangey and the 110 more scooped and boomy. 114 would probably cut better in a band setting, and sounds more balanced overall to me.
I signed up but didn't get any list or the tabs. I like all the riffs you did in this video. How can I get those tabs please? By the way, I just bought this 110e- great guitar. Walked in to GC to get the D-18 walked out the 110e. Saving the $1,700 was not the deciding factor. The 110e cannot be beat for the price. That 114 sounded great too. My new 110e has layered Walnut- not Sapele.
I have been playing a 114ce for a bit, and it sounds very nice. Clear and bright. I would not want it any brighter. If anything, I kinda was digging a Seagull which had a thicker, fuller/warmer tone. May have had a cedar top. Both nice guitars of course.
I wouldn't kick either out of bed of course. But for strumming there is a real night and day difference. The dreadnought shines during strumming. Bottom line, gotta get into the music store and try both out yourself of course. But I love a bright sounding strum, so the 110 all the way for me.
I've been recording for 30+ years and I'm extremely picky when it comes to acoustic guitars. After months of listening guitar shoot-outs and spending long hours in the guitar shops I made my move and bought the 114e. A week earlier I had given up trying to find a decent used Taylor in the $300 price range, so I bought a Fender CD-140sce, because for S299 was almost as good as the Taylor but aesthetically nicer and with a tuner built in too! Then I happened to be in Sam Ash while they were promoting Taylors at a discounted price and after hours of comparing the 114e with all the guitars in the shop I narrowed it down to the 114e and the Martin DX 1AE. Both in the same price range and with different personalities. I wish I could own both, because the Martin has a mellow/natural sound which is better in strumming sessions. But since I'm more into finger picking I went for the Taylor. I had to empty my savings account, but I'm happy. I think when you step into the "big boys" guitar arena you start "investing" money in something that holds its value and gets better while aging. The 110e is too metallic sounding for me. I'm glad I chose the 114e, it's a little warmer and versatile. I'm returning the Fender today :)
I am surprised when I say this but I think the 114 sounds better than the 110. I love dreadnought guitars but I think the 114 has a much better balance between low and high end. It sounds weird but the 110 sounds like the strings are too tight to properly resonate, it sounds great for basic loud chords but the 114 has more color in its sound. I was set on a 110e but now I'm going for the 114e, thanks Acoustic Letter!
Jok3rDicE I recently played two 110's and was surprised at how lacking it sounded when compared to the 114, which sounded great. I too expected a little more bass while understanding that Taylor's are naturally brighter. I did notice that the 110's had 80/20 and not Phosphor bronze. And this will make a difference. I personally love Elixir's... I prefer Nanoweb's on my acoustics and the Poly's on my electrics. The Poly's tend to cover up the tone, in my opinion, on acoustics. The Nano's in my opinion are darker than regular non-coated strings. So, I recommend Elixir Nano's, either mediums or lights. If you still have time to exchange your guitar, I'd go for the 114. It's a fantastic guitar and it can handle any type of strumming that the 110 can (imho). Good luck...
At the source of of my 110 sale there were no 114's available. I would've chose the 110 anyway. I've played the D35 Martin of the banjo player in our Bg group. I heard the 814 Taylor of a picker I knew so I went the 110 route. Bought it at a pawn shop on a Labor Day sale. Paid a steal price for it $280.00 + $7.00 sales tax. I already had a Martin. Luvin the 110.
I personally like the 114 more, I actually own a 114ce. They don't sound too different in this video but in person they sound way more different and that does with every guitar. Videos are a good way to kind if see what you might like but I highly highly recommend those who are trying to decide which guitar to get to go to your local music shop and play all kinds of shapes models and brands. I played the 110 and liked it a lot and then I picked up the 114 and played and played and played, it was about an hour and it felt like 5 minutes, that's when you know that's the guitar for you.
Cheetah Tran I have the Taylor 110e and it's perfect for finger picking.. sounds great to my ears. IT does have some issues when strumming heavily. But it could just need a set up.
pedro mendoza Hi. 110 uses 0.13, not 0,12. And that's the reason becouse it's very hard to play to my fingers and hands. How does the sound change if I change from 0,13 to 0,12?
I just got a 114 on ebay for $475. Resellers selling open boxed no factory warranty are often selling them for about $500. Pretty good deal to get wood and not get Martin's plastic laminate back and sides, and get ebony fretboard for $500.
just bought the 110 yesterday. I finally step out of the epiphone, yamaha and fender world into the the High end boys. yes i get that this is low end for the Higher end guitars. but its still better then the higher end range of the other guitars I listed. I didn't even play the 114. played just about everything else in this price range. in this video the 114 did sound better. but the second I strummed the 110 it was instantly mine. anyone who has actually "shopped" for an acoustic knows what I mean. something deep in you will instantly "bound" with the guitar.....
What is Taylor size comparison to Yamaha. I currently use the Yamaha FGX800C and want to switch to Taylor and Idk what model and size (grand auditorium/dreadnough) to choose from. I want a similar tone (bright) and body shape.
In review I liked 114 better and went to local store looking for it. They had three 110s and one 114. After playing all four for about 40 minutes I ended up walking away with one of the 110s.
Me too. The 110E played in a acoustic room just sounds huge comparatively. Bright? Yes...bit that gives you the abiliry to tame it with your fingers and string choice. A non bright guitar cant go up. It will be duller or quieter... even when you desire more. Ideally you could own both!
Is there enough difference between the 3xx series of taylors and these to make buying one of each worthwhile? I have a GC3 and love it, and am considering another Taylor....but I have to stay in the 1xx or 2xx range due to cost.
Thats completely subjective. I find the sound is similar but you can tell that the 3 series are all solid wood. The sustain and volume is a little better but I dunno if its enough to justify the extra cost. If I were to buy a 3-series it would be their new slope shoulder model (317).
Best review on these 2 guitars that I have seen yet. Love the tone of both of them. I just purchased the 110e last night... Either way I couldn't have gone wrong!

I know this is stupid to ask since ones a mini and on isn't but what would you recommend more a 114 or a gs mini?
Both guitars are very similar in how they're built.... it really depends on which guitar fits you the best. -Chad
Which one is the most versatile?
114 all the way. Just bought one
Anyone knnows how is this matte finish cared for and cleaned?
Thank you so much 👍
110 Seems fuller and louder (and probably more sustain) and 114 more dynamic and balanced
Hi, witch is smaller the GS Mini or the 114?
+sicopr2003 GS Mini.... smaller body and shorter scale. -Chad
110 all the way, much brighter!
The difference is felt more than heard imo. It's both but the dread feels more whole when you play it. That said I bought a grand auditorium
do they have the same strings?
what strings do you recommend for a taylor 110e? I bought it and I dont like the to bright sounds, is there a way to make the tones abit warmer?
+Eric Bee or just stuff some old clothes inside the body till it gets warm enough
whats that song on 2:07 i want to learn it lol
Alfred Perez The Last Steam Engine Train - John Fahey
At the source of of my 110 sale there were no 114's available. I would've chose the 110 anyway. I've played the D35 Martin of the banjo player in our Bg group. I heard the 814 Taylor of a picker I knew so I went the 110 route. Bought it at a pawn shop on a Labor Day sale.
Paid a steal price for it $280.00 + $7.00 sales tax. I already had a Martin. Luvin the 110.
I really want a taylor soo bad. I just know I will never get it.☹️
SmileyBreana TV I’m selling my 110
I personally like the 114 more, I actually own a 114ce.
So you chosed the 110e?
how about some guitar comparisons in the $11 to $1300. price range
Where can I get the tabs of these guitar lessons?
I can help you with a few of the Tabs...... please send me an email info@acousticletter.com -Chad
It's done
which one would be more optimal for finger picking?
the auditorium or the grand concert would be good for picking/fingerstyle.
Cheetah Tran I have the Taylor 110e and it's perfect for finger picking.. sounds great to my ears. IT does have some issues when strumming heavily. But it could just need a set up.
what of these two guitars is better for fingerstyle?
victor cm neither really. the dreadnaught (110) will be louder and deeper bass but really you want a Martin and non spruce top for fingerstyle
victor cm The 114
I liked the sound of the 110
Hi !What string did you use on both guitars ?
Elixir 0.12 -0.53 bro
pedro mendoza Hi. 110 uses 0.13, not 0,12. And that's the reason becouse it's very hard to play to my fingers and hands. How does the sound change if I change from 0,13 to 0,12?
@@jorgelucero7053 k
The sound of the grand auditorium style is just superior to the dreadnought in every way.
I just got a 114 on ebay for $475. Resellers selling open boxed no factory warranty are often selling them for about $500. Pretty good deal to get wood and not get Martin's plastic laminate back and sides, and get ebony fretboard for $500.
Just got a 110e for 320$ 😁😁
+Omar Garcia You are lucky- I am living in France. In my town shop they are selling 110ce for 969Euro. Fuck it
I put martin marquis strings on my 110e, its awesome
+sheldon migwans 1200,2100 or 1400?
forgot #. But they were Medium strings cause the 110e is for medium strings recommended
just bought the 110 yesterday.
How much price?
+trần công hậu I would be happy to quote a price for you. Could you send me an email? info@acousticletter.com. Thanks, Chad
tks !!! very usefull ... finaly I prefer the 114
Nothing beats the bass of a dread
The 110 has a brighter tone and longer sustain, but the 114 has more balance.
Claudia Barreto totally agree with that
In review I liked 114 better and went to local store looking for it. They had three 110s and one 114. After playing all four for about 40 minutes I ended up walking away with one of the 110s.
+Roman Soboliev Same here. Played all the 110's and 114's in sock and walked out with the 110. The best (but not most expensive) acoustic I've had.
I bought the 214 grand aud, but I went back yesterday and played the 210. Now I'm conflicted and may have to swap them. Idk
Me too. The 110E played in a acoustic room just sounds huge comparatively. Bright? Yes...bit that gives you the abiliry to tame it with your fingers and string choice. A non bright guitar cant go up. It will be duller or quieter... even when you desire more. Ideally you could own both!
I think the 114E sounds better in my ears opinion.
I prefer the look of the 110 but the sound of the 114
Is there enough difference between the 3xx series of taylors and these to make buying one of each worthwhile?
I have a GC3 and love it, and am considering another Taylor....but I have to stay in the 1xx or 2xx range due to cost.
Thats completely subjective. I find the sound is similar but you can tell that the 3 series are all solid wood. The sustain and volume is a little better but I dunno if its enough to justify the extra cost. If I were to buy a 3-series it would be their new slope shoulder model (317).
I am short and I don't like the guitar to look big on me , does the 114 fits short people?
Ayyoush sb you're worried about the wrong thing
Concert size 114 wins here..But thats not always the case...
My favorite taylor is still the gs mini mahogany
difference is A & D
The 114 sounds modern and the 110 sounds traditional. If that makes any sense. ha
...I think your comment is one of the best...You have good ear.
I tried the 110 and 114 today. Then tried a 314. I ended up buying a Martin D28. The Taylor's were just to bright for my liking.
the 114 apears to have more mids, the 110 sounds more mid scooped
114 wins.. but it doesn't matter, ill use it with mixer/amp..
