Radical Patriotic Conservative. No that is incorrect. When Nick talks with Gatsby's father at the end of the book he tells Nick that Gatsby never really belonged in the family and that he always had big dreams for himself. This was way way before Daisy

I think the rap fit perfectly. While not from that era, rap nowadays provokes similar reactions to jazz in the past and therefore, at least in my opinion, fits the tone.

@@dunbass7149 actually, they’ve got a point. Jazz, back then, was viewed very differently from what it is today. It was called “the devil’s music,” there were campaigns to censor it, it encouraged dancing, dancing that was considered promiscuous, and it was a style of music pioneered and performed by black people, something that was not socially acceptable back then due to rampant racism in society then.
If the Great Gatsby had exclusively played Jazz music present in the 20s, it would not carry over the same cultural connotations as it does today. Rap music today often deals with topics such as promiscuity and often uses foul language, and is often a genre used to dance, often promiscuously, thus eliciting the same reaction from us today, as would the people of 1920s New York.

It faced--or seemed to face--the whole eternal world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. I've seen the world, done it all
    Had my cake now
Diamonds, brilliant, and Bel Air now
    Hot summer nights, mid-July
When you and I were forever wild
    The crazy days, city lights
The way you'd play with me like a child
    [Chorus]
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?
Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will, I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
    [Verse 2]
I've seen the world, lit it up as my stage now
Channeling angels in the new age now
Hot summer days, rock and roll
The way you'd play for me at your show
And all the ways I got to know
Your pretty face and electric soul
    [Chorus]
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?
Will you still love me when I got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will, I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
    [Bridge]
Dear Lord, when I get to heaven
Please, let me bring my man
When he comes, tell me that You'll let him in
Father, tell me if You can
All that grace, all that body
All that face makes me wanna party
He's my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds
    [Chorus]
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?
Will you still love me when I got nothin' but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will, I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?

The way he loved Daisy, the way he loved what life with Daisy would look like was so dangerously beautiful to me. The reason The Great Gatsby is a classic is because it is a tragedy. Nick was the only person who saw that Gatsby was a great man, but sadly with a singular blinding devotion to a fault for his true love. Lana's haunting style is a perfect fit to this timeless literary masterpiece.

tbh i think nick had a slight affection for him in a romantic light. maybe fell in love with the image in a materialistic curious way, and then never realised he had went the full way to unveil gatsby’s true self and knew him in his most raw and vulnerable state, thus being so passionate about remembering him and sleeping depressingly on the stairs , defending gatsby’s name and corpse so passionately.. shame we’ll never find out, old sport.

Every time I listen to this song, I tear up. It reminds me of this one woman. This woman's life was terrible. She died at only 36. Some think she was murdered, some think suicide. No one really knows. She was a beautiful smart woman. She was born on June 1. 2 weeks later she was taken to an orphanage because her mother was mentally ill. She would be in 9 different foster homes from then till she was 16. She was raped twice during this episode of her life, both times by a different foster parent. Once at the age of 9, and another at age 11. At the age of 16, her new foster parents, whom she liked, couldnt have her live with her anymore, so it was either the orphanage or marriage to a boy she had been dating for a couple months. She chose marriage. During her marriage to her husband, named James, she wanted nothing more then a family, and to began her always wanted career as a model and actress. Her husband didn't support either of these. They ended up divorced. She was once again all alone. She had no money. Her car was towed, power turned off, and she was in desperate need of money. That was when she decided to get a quick "buck" by posing nude in a photo shoot, called the Red Velvet shoot. These would later become the first cover of Playboy magazine. She began modeling. She had her brown hair lightened to a gold color. She modeled for a while until she was offered a career in the movie business. She changed her name and had her hair cut short and died platinum. Her career was all she had until she married Joe DiMaggio. however he would beat her and call her a whore. They divorced only 9 months after there marriage. She then would marry a third time to Arthur Miller, in this stage she became pregnant 3 times, but sadly resulted in 3 miscarriages. She was diagnosed with endometriosis and could not have children. He blamed them on her causing her to go into depression. She had tried to commit suicide multiple times already. They divorced. On August 5, 1962 dead laying flat down on her bed at 2 am. It was done by an overdose. She was carried away. The real question is that would people "love her when she is no longer young and beautiful?" In God's eye she will forever be young and beautiful. This woman's name is Marilyn Monroe. R.I.P. June 1, 1926 - August 5, 1962 Age: 36

I feel the same way! I have the DVD and have seen the movie more than enough times. She loved him but I think she was more concerned with 'Having' him. She used him as an escape from Tom and the real world when she needed to. There was the attraction and desire when they first saw each other after a long time. I just think Gatsby was gone way to long and Daisy grew accustomed to Tom's money and foolery.

This song summarizes how Gatsby didn't really love Daisy.
The book/movie is suppose to be about the American Dream. When you read/watch it, it's easy to buy into the idea that Gatsby is that dream's physical representation: he's rich, he's beloved, he has the cars, the clothes, and the giant mansion -- more wealth than anyone could ever want or know how to spend, -- but he isn't the American Dream. Daisy is, because Gatsby simply isn't happy with what he has -- HE NEEDS MORE. HE NEEDS HER. People who believe in that Dream only see this ideal, to the point that nothing and no one else matters. They will do and sacrifice anything to get what they want, just like Gatsby. Everything he had was meaningless to him: all those people at his parties were pawns, even Nick; none of them really mattered to Gatsby. Only Daisy mattered.
So if you look close enough, you'll see that Gatsby didn't really love Daisy because he loved the IDEA of her, he loved what she represented, for the same reason that people love the idea of the American Dream. They don't really want the house, the dog, the white picket fence: they want the perfect life and the perfect partner to live it with, when no such thing and no such person exists. That's why Daisy was deliberately written to seem so perfect herself: she's young, she's lively, she's wealthy and powerful - along with all the happiness that promises to bring. That's why this song is even sadder than it lets on: "will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful?" We don't know. It implies that even if they were together, Daisy and Gatsby wouldn't have been happy. Why? Because it's a lie. Because he doesn't love her. Because the American Dream is just that...it's a DREAM.
The Great Gatsby (the person) wasn't that great. He was incredibly flawed, delusional, and callous, to the point that he was willing to ruin a family. I will always love him as a character, but just as Gatsby didn't deserve to die, no one deserves to be with someone who doesn't love them for who they really are. We are people, not someone else's fantasy.

    Young And Beautiful - Lyrics
    I've seen the world
    Done it all
    Had my cake now
    Diamonds, brilliant
    And Bel Air now
    Hot summer nights, mid July
When you and I were forever wild
    The crazy days, city lights
The way you'd play with me like a child
    Will you still love me
When I'm no longer young and beautiful?
    Will you still love me
When I got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will
    I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
I've seen the world, lit it up
    As my stage now
Channeling angels in the new age now
Hot summer days, rock 'n' roll
The way you play for me at your show
And all the ways I got to know
Your pretty face and electric soul
    Will you still love me
When I'm no longer young and beautiful?
    Will you still love me
When I got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will
    I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
Dear lord, when I get to heaven
Please let me bring my man
When he comes tell me that you'll let him in
Father tell me if you can
Oh that grace, oh that body
Oh that face makes me wanna party
He's my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds
    Will you still love me
When I'm no longer young and beautiful?
    Will you still love me
When I got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will
    I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?

not many people I know appreciated The Great Gatsby the way I did, what really moved me about the movie was the sheer hope that J Gatsby had, the love he had for the world, and the way he tried to make the best of his life. The one thing he needed to finally make him truly happy, was love, which he got for a short amount of time, before he met a truly sad and unexpected, unnecessarily, tragic end. The reason he died; he protected the one he loved.

    Will you still love me
When I've got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will
    I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
I've seen the world, lit it up
    As my stage now
Channeling angels in a new age now
Hot summer days, rock and roll
The way you play for me at your show
And all the ways, I got to know
Your pretty face and electric soul
    Will you still love me
When I'm no longer young and beautiful?
    Will you still love me
When I've got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will
    I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
Dear lord, when I get to heaven
Please let me bring my man
When he comes tell me that you'll let him in
Father tell me if you can
All that grace, all that body
All that face, makes me wanna party
He's my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds
    Will you still love me
When I'm no longer young and beautiful?
    Will you still love me
When I've got nothing but my aching soul?
I know you will, I know you will
    I know that you will
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
Will you still love me when I'm no longer beautiful?
Will you still love me when I'm not young and beautiful?

I happen to hear this song on Pandora first before watching The Great Gatsby, when I finally watched the movie last night & it started playing it... I couldn't stop the tear rolling down my cheek. He did, and would have done anything to have her. Everything he had meant nothing because she was his everything.

    Her voice is magic...beautiful..
The bassline shows true power and the brilliancy of Gatsby...
The instruments show pure beauty and pull you in a way nothing else can....
    This song...is true love....
This song...is what I want my crush to sing to me....right before I tell her I love her...
Because, despite what anyone may say, she will always...be young and beautiful to me..

This woman is brilliant, as a male I have more respect for this woman than any other mainstream female artist, she's unique and has an ability to tap into my emotions which is something that is actually very difficult for me to do normally.

I always loved the book the great Gatsby, I've read it a million times, I remember reading it in English in 6th grade all the way to now. It gets me every time, the movie felt so much different, but the love was still so true, Leonardo DiCaprio is my favorite actor and he beautifully portrayed the love Gatsby felt for Daisy and the extent of it's truth. But this song is so beautiful it almost doesn't feel like music, more like a beautiful scene to be imagined, and I love it so much.

This song's beauty and what it did for the Daisy & Gatsby love/reconnecting scene almost makes up for the anachronistic train wrecks that were the rap songs Jay-Z shat across the movie. They completely jarred me out of the Roaring '20s in the worst way possible.

The reason they put hip hop into the movie is because they wanted people to know the feeling that those in the twenties felt when they heard Jazz. At the time Jazz was looked upon the same way hip hop is looked upon today so, they wanted to represent this feeling.

    • @FerventLotus
      @FerventLotus 9 лет назад +4

***** If the new generation cannot connect with Jazz, then we may as well call them the soulless generation. Jazz is soul. The 20s were full of soul. To convince the masses about the feeling of the twenties would be to remind them of the roots of all music that has heart, not replace it with songs that one day 100 years from now, future generations will question how we allowed our roots to fall away.
That's what the rap music does to any movie like this. Those who hated the scenes with a rap layover are the ones who still have soul and still have heart. Those who thought they were perfect with that atrocious music are severely out of touch.
