This is great news for you, and I am happy for you! However, there is no question this has a very significant impact on the integrity of your channel, as you stated yourself. Not that you’d be unethical, I am confident that wouldn’t be the case. But it does impact your overall perception as an independent reliable content creator. It will have a dramatic impact. As a fan, it’s disappointing. But I understand completely why you would accept the offer and look forward to the improvements you bring to gamefound!
It's just board games, people are infinitely more worried about the appearance of impropriety than there are any actual real issues with integrity in this space. Alex is fine, the content will be fine, life will go on.

I love Alex's reviews but in his new role I'm not sure he's going to be as free to rate games and say what he doesn't like or could see others not liking for games on Gamefound. I think he'll try to be unbiased but it just wouldn't look good for a CMO to give a poor or middling review of a product they're trying to promote.

This would be akin to a journalist covering a trading house being hired by that trading house to discuss their investment strategies. I think top tens and such probably won’t take much of a difference but I unfortunately won’t be partaking in the weekly crowdfunding roundups, reviews, or first impressions any more. And I don’t think it is in any way going to be intentionally different on your part, but the very nature of being embedded with a company means you can’t truthfully talk about that company in public. But seriously, best of luck. GF has picked up an excellent resource with you.
It's a valid viewpoint for sure. Reviews are not just tough when talking about your own company's products, but also the products of current / future business partners, or those based with a competitor. The more I think about it, I'd favour Alex moving away from 'reviews' and stealing a concept from another hobby, transition a move to being a board game journalist / commentator, and away from being a board game critic. That said, there are elements that he does now that still feel fine, plus the potential to branch out on in a new direction if Alex did drop reviews and wanted something else to Good to continue: - The coffee table chats in the week in review. I'd go so far as to suggest these could expand & take centre stage. It's good to have thoughtful discussions in our hobby and for me it's where Alex shines brightest - Games leaving my collection ought to be fine - merely decisions about Alex's personal collection and keeps some of the 'about me' as part of the channel. - What I did / didn't back could still be ok - again it's a very personal thing, with him spending his own money. - News should in general be ok, though it might need even gentler steps around some news stories. - Collaborations could be ok, but perhaps less so the 'worst 10 games' series, as again that's in the realms of reviews (and negative ones at that). Good to avoid the ones that just come across like an advertising opportunity for the guest as well. New? - Like I said, the considered 'chats' are a highlight (IMO), and given their own slot (not buried in the week in review) might attract a wider audience. Some could be topical, others not. - Talking through his games in a genre e.g. area control / worker placement / etc. , saying when they get played, what works well, what can be problematic, plus others being considered or that have left his collection, even what might be hoped for in the future.

OK, here's a weirder improvement that would greatly improve foot traffic and buyer's remorse ....A way ( if the creator allows it on there campaign) to allow us to sell our pledges on the campaign Page. After All of the money is already paid, allow people to buy and sell there pledges, if someone is unhappy with there pledge they can list it on the campaign page BEFORE it ships ( For the same price they paid for it, it could be credits to Gamefound) Maybe send a email that pledges are available to buy after the campaign ends.
I ended up picking up a friend's pledge for dawn of Madness. It hasn't shipped. Would be helpful to make it "official" . And then I could maybe do addons as well...
This is a great idea. I actually bought someone else's pledge before, but it was a cumbersome process that required trust. The seller was very upset with how long the project was taking, but I had confidence that, while late, the project would deliver and be excellent. And I regretted being unable to back it. I think it's a great way to give backers a way to get out of a project without harming the company.

@@BoardGameCo that is great news, I would really appreciate that. If I am allowed to make one last suggestion, I find it kind of difficult to track my received and unrecieved games, I like what kickstarter does with the little check mark.
One small change they could add is a time remaining bar that shows how much time a game has left while in the main search area so you dont have to click on the game to see whe it ends. (KS has this) also maybe add in the Filter section like {tables} {coins} {assersories} {play mats} {card games} {boardgames} {expansions} {relaunches} and so on. When sorting with the different options {newest}{oldest}{most funded}{most popular} in the main search page after you pick on and hit apply you cant tell if its actually sorted the way you want it. each box should have like the date added to game fund at the top of them for example. KS just has well more information but they have been around a lot longer to learn all that stuff.. the more features the better though!

I know some viewers will have concerns about bias (as discussed in this video and others), but for me personally, I am not unduly concerned because I can trust your judgment based on past performance (similar to how I feel with Rahdo, Tom Vasel, Thinker/Themer, etc.). Maybe that makes me naive, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. Best of luck on the new adventure! And please push for useful notifications on gamefound projects (and/or an app version) and a way to filter/sort backed projects :D

I don't live and die by your word on games. Your voice is just one of many I listen to when making my own decision. So you working for Gamefound doesn't affect how I consume your content. So go get it. Make content on this channel. Create a new Gamefound channel if that helps or you want to. Be creative and innovative. Don't worry if people feel you can't or won't be biased. If you feel the need to hand this channel off, do what works for you and your family. Congratulations again and go and be great and make a bigger impact.
Liege of games has some great points in his newest "Back or Not" video about Gamefound's home page. The emphasis on upcoming projects as opposed to highlighting current projects leads to so many games getting buried.

I have just got heavily into this hobby and your channel has helpped me a lot to get to know games, different genres that I didn't even know existed.... Congrats! I know this may not be your area, but my only gripe with the GameFound system is the updates - they don't populate in the email, you HAVE to link to the page to read the updates, and I almost always refuse, and just go without reading the details.
I think is fine like it is. On the refered page where there's the update it's possible to interact leaving some comment, your like/dislike or sometimes take part on some poll to choose between several characters designs or wathever. On email would be just a plain image and the weight of the email would be higher.
Congrats. In all the talk about bias, there is another danger/risk that you need to be mindful of: overcompensation. I find that I grade my students more leniently when I’m in a bad mood, or unhappy with the class/student. Basically, I try really hard not to let my feelings/mood bias my impressions. But the reality is, while I’m aware of a possible bias, it’s much harder to assess the magnitude of the bias. So, I find myself overcompensating. That’s an inevitable consequence of trying to be honest, fair, and transparency. I suspect you will find yourself in the same situation. Good luck, you still have my trust and my support.

Splitting your GameFound coverage from other platforms can help manage the conflict and balance (even if it's part of the same video), but I do expect the relationship will impact your incredible "back or not to back" videos. You should be able to keep your unique perspective of aggressively culling your collection based on game-play, table-time and value.

And for those who they are, as long as there's a reminder that is something like "promoted" content, it's up to the viewer to make it's own opinion about the game. About improvements on gamefound, I think Community tab from kickstarter is nice for those who want language editions in order to know if there's enought supporters from their country to ask for it. It could be a nice addition.

After All of the money is already paid, allow people to buy and sell there pledges, if someone is unhappy with there pledge they can list it on the campaign page BEFORE it ships ( For the same price they paid for it, it could be credits to Gamefound) Maybe send a email that pledges are available to buy after the campaign ends.

This is a great idea. I actually bought someone else's pledge before, but it was a cumbersome process that required trust. The seller was very upset with how long the project was taking, but I had confidence that, while late, the project would deliver and be excellent. And I regretted being unable to back it. I think it's a great way to give backers a way to get out of a project without harming the company.

One small change they could add is a time remaining bar that shows how much time a game has left while in the main search area so you dont have to click on the game to see whe it ends. (KS has this)
also maybe add in the Filter section like {tables} {coins} {assersories} {play mats} {card games} {boardgames} {expansions} {relaunches} and so on.
When sorting with the different options {newest}{oldest}{most funded}{most popular}
in the main search page after you pick on and hit apply you cant tell if its actually sorted the way you want it. each box should have like the date added to game fund at the top of them for example.
KS just has well more information but they have been around a lot longer to learn all that stuff..
the more features the better though!

I know some viewers will have concerns about bias (as discussed in this video and others), but for me personally, I am not unduly concerned because I can trust your judgment based on past performance (similar to how I feel with Rahdo, Tom Vasel, Thinker/Themer, etc.). Maybe that makes me naive, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. Best of luck on the new adventure!

I don't live and die by your word on games. Your voice is just one of many I listen to when making my own decision. So you working for Gamefound doesn't affect how I consume your content.
So go get it. Make content on this channel. Create a new Gamefound channel if that helps or you want to. Be creative and innovative. Don't worry if people feel you can't or won't be biased. If you feel the need to hand this channel off, do what works for you and your family.

I have just got heavily into this hobby and your channel has helpped me a lot to get to know games, different genres that I didn't even know existed.... Congrats! I know this may not be your area, but my only gripe with the GameFound system is the updates - they don't populate in the email, you HAVE to link to the page to read the updates, and I almost always refuse, and just go without reading the details.
My ISS Vanguard somehow had notifications turned off, and they told me they couldn't be turned back on
I think is fine like it is. On the refered page where there's the update it's possible to interact leaving some comment, your like/dislike or sometimes take part on some poll to choose between several characters designs or wathever. On email would be just a plain image and the weight of the email would be higher.

Congrats. In all the talk about bias, there is another danger/risk that you need to be mindful of: overcompensation.
I find that I grade my students more leniently when I’m in a bad mood, or unhappy with the class/student. Basically, I try really hard not to let my feelings/mood bias my impressions. But the reality is, while I’m aware of a possible bias, it’s much harder to assess the magnitude of the bias. So, I find myself overcompensating.
That’s an inevitable consequence of trying to be honest, fair, and transparency. I suspect you will find yourself in the same situation.

Congratulations, Alex. Splitting your GameFound coverage from other platforms can help manage the conflict and balance (even if it's part of the same video), but I do expect the relationship will impact your incredible "back or not to back" videos. You should be able to keep your unique perspective of aggressively culling your collection based on game-play, table-time and value.
Congratulations for that new opportunity, you deserved. I don't see any impact on the integrity of the channel as long as there's hundreds of games released every year that are not on gamefound. And for those who they are, as long as there's a reminder that is something like "promoted" content, it's up to the viewer to make it's own opinion about the game.
About improvements on gamefound, I think Community tab from kickstarter is nice for those who want language editions in order to know if there's enought supporters from their country to ask for it. It could be a nice addition.

Just throwing my 2 cents in... I don't think the general boardgamer really cares what people use to put out games... We just back the games we want. Seems like you might want to be asking creators what you need to do to get them on Game found.
