I was at a rest area in North Carolina and getting ready to get out of my truck for my pre-trip, when I saw a man walking around. I thought he was a fellow truck driver and doing his pre-trip but I didn't feel good about getting out of my truck yet so I sat in the driver's seat waiting to see what was going on. Next thing I know he was banging on my driver's window stating he needed help that he locked himself out of his truck. He looked over to a Ford ranger that was parked close to me, which was odd. I told him I could not help him but I could call the police for him. When I reach for my phone he went and got in the passenger seat of that truck and another person set up in the driver's seat and they drove away. I was very lucky that day.

As a retired woman driver, thank you for sharing. I went to great lengths to never get out of my truck at night. This guy should not be allowed to walk among us. Thank God you are safe.

I’m a new lady trucker. I dont leave my truck if its dark, either…and immediately pull my curtains when I pull in.
I am a 39-year-old man. I'm not afraid to get out of my truck, but I do know the creeps come out at night. What I suggest everybody do, instead of using those nasty bathrooms, get you a toilet for camping. It's in Walmart. Put a garbage bag inside of it. Use it. Throw it away. That's it.

I had Truckers save me driving thru Georgia once in the early 80's. I was 28, recently widowed, traveling alone during day light ,with my dog & cat, in our pickup, with a crawl thru window into my cabover camper, so I never had to get out of the vehicle. I had a cb radio. There was very little traffic around me, when a large male, in a black TransAm, kept pulling next to me & tried repeatedly to run me off the road. Truckers in the opposite lane heard my call for help, saw it happening & flashed their headlights at me. Then, called out to E bound truckers. Within minutes, 4 semis came from out of nowhere and completely surrounded me to protect me, and chaufered me all the way! They also made sure the creep was arrested!

I am a female who used to travel for work in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. I only had one close call when a guy followed me when I was leaving the business late at night after I finished my audit. I pressed my personal alarm and he ran across the parking lot and jumped in his car. The facility’s cameras got his car and license plate and the state patrol caught him leaving town. He was on parole for sexual assault and went straight back to prison! I was glad it was me leaving because two younger employees would have been leaving a half hour later and they did not carry alarms.
Situational awareness is the only way for a woman to save herself. The soft on crime people who let these men out after short sentences don’t have to work at night or even leave their homes at night like many women have to do for their employment. I am retired and don’t go out at night anymore.

Our prisons are stuffed to the gills with those caught with personal amounts of illicit drugs and petty thieves; drug addicts doing crimes directly related to being drug addicts, in other words. Violent felons have no business being outside prison walls. Unfortunately, a lot of people think it’s okay that whether or not someone is behind bars has more to do with their access to money than the severity of their crimes.
They need longer prison sentences . Stop this revolving door on these prisons .

Pine pellet horse bedding (or use pellet stove pellets) absorb 10x their weight. 3 cups in a 4-gallon bag, vintage style chamber pot (even an ice cream bucket will do.) The pine pellets smell good & easy to dispose of. The convenience and safety invaluable!!

I literally just left Missouri, but I took I-55 and the I-255 bypass.😱 My hubby rides with me, so I feel a lot safer, but I'm still aware of my surroundings and he walks with me or watches me esp after dark. S..exual assault isn't about how you look.. It's about power and preying on the weak. Be safe, lady truckers!! Women should be able to go take a piss after dark without being kidnapped, Ma'am. St louis city and county are absolute no go areas, keep it moving and pull over somewhere where there are more trees than buildings and more livestock than people. St Louis is basically a zoo with no cages, the animals have access to guns liquor and drugs and the zookeepers have been defended. Would you visit that zoo?

My husband drove a “Skateboard”, another term for flatbed. Smart to park by them!!! The pipe used to help tighten chains n binders…get hit by that , you definitely aren’t getting up n walking away.
What a shame though. You may need to carry a gun and arm yourself with sprays, bullets whatever it takes for your protection. I truly dislike guns but the world we live in now it’s almost like you have to. In the morning when you’re getting ready to leave for work, get your keys, phone, gun. Conceal and carry, you have a holster for your gun, put in on like you would a belt, the spray is good to have, always be prepared.

Retired female trucker of 30yrs..lord knows I've had my share of scary moments otr but not an actual attack like that. It's important ladies do what's needed to protect themselves. Portable toilet, I've used a 1gal gas can w/funnel (not pleasant to clean but works), self protection "tools" in sleeper, in shower bag & on my person at all times when able. There's ways to secure both doors from inside your truck, highly recommend to make that a nightly habit. I've noticed things have gotten sketchier in recent years so I feel for the ladies out there but glad I'm now retired from trucking. Pls ladies, take steps to protect yourself & stay safe out there.
I've had to pee into bowls, etc., at night when traveling due to being too scared to exit my vehicle. Better safe than sorry.

It is very important to close doors, curtains asap as you stopped and have a portable potty. I normally avoid to go to bathroom at night. Once, I had homeless person bang to my door near Atlanta, GA at truck stop at 2am!!! I ignore him and I didn't opened the door... there is nothing to talk about with strangers at 2am! Ladies becareful up there! God please keep all truckers safe!

I used to carry a straight razor in my boot, i have been a victim of kidnapping in my early 30s...i just retired from trucking in 2023 after 45yrs...i learned long ago to protect myself, martial arts training. Becuz when i started trucking i was just 79lbs...i grew up on the ghettos of watt's and east L.A...very street smart! I made my own porta potty out of a 5gal step trash can, with liners n camping chems...never got out of my truck at rest areas or truckstops at night without checking my surroundings and made sure to have a flashlight 🔦 at night, if i had to walk between trucks... if i was stuck in a really bad area overnight. I used my seatbelts to wrap around the steering wheel n the door so if someone tried to get in it wasnt going to be easy n of course sleeping with one eye open! My kids now 50, 48, n 45 always worried about me! I would let them know if i felt unsafe somewhere and where it was in case something did happen! This world is full of evildoers so protect yourself or learn how...yes i did carry whether company or O/OP...Stay safe n keep your guard up always~Stargazer~

Fellow truck driver here. I've been doing this for 5 years, and yes, I had seen some shady characters. But I know I got that look that I wish you would. Because it will be their Master very soon! I parked very close to the toilets and everything else. Plus, I'm right by where I hopefully think someone would help me out? But everyone always says this and that. But due to being a woman of color, I don't really know if someone would come to my help if they're white? But don't worry Jesus Lord got my back.

My Husband was a Trucker. I was on the road with him for months. Those truck stops are very scary. We have a portable folding toilet. I never left the truck unless I was with my Husband. I recommend to carry, I don’t understand why companies will not allow you to carry. Truckers lives are NOT valued at all. Be safe out there Men and Women. Trucking is a VERY dangerous business.
That’s exactly why when I would go on the road with my Husband OTR - He never NEVER let me walk even 3feet away from the truck . At night it was always a big HUGE No-NO to leave the truck after the sun goes down .. I always thought he was over protective but no he wasn’t. 1991 when I first started driving. Parked in the front row right at the building under a light. New York State. Something woke me around 1 am. Went in to the bathroom. Coming back out I was grabbed from behind with a knife to my neck. I was raped. By another driver. No one came to my rescue. It’s humiliating, degrading, and terrifying. I almost quit driving because of it. I don’t get out at night if I don’t have to now.

I know it’s not my fault. Now anyway. When it happens you blame yourself. If only I didn’t get out. If only this if only that. And the sad part is, it’s made me leery against black men because it was a black man that did it. I know logically that not all black men would do this. But illogically, emotionally, it’s made me wary of them my whole adult life. Because of one man. I’m sorry, I truly am, to any black men reading this. I know most of you are not cruel, hate filled, raping women at knife or gun point. Sometimes logic takes a hike when things happen like this.

Never get out of your truck at night unless you are at a fuel island under surveillance. Keep your trucks stock with provisions (food, water, wash basin, pee cups, etc.). Take your showers early in the day. When you park, close your curtains and IMMEDIATELY and chill in your sleeper for 10+ hours.
Gotta keep them pee cups available at all times
theres these fancy pee bags that have powder in them, so it wont spill 🙂
So glad those men came to help you. When I got my teeth done I had 2 black eyes for quite a while and no body asked me if I was ok. Right then and there I swore I would never pass someone, especially a woman, without asking if they are ok. God is great! Also, please get a home depot bucket and a camping toilet seat that fits on it, found in the camping section at Walmart. Just use trash bags to keep the bucket clean.

I'm not a truck driver, but I've had to go on the road alone, a few times. Thank you for posting this. ❤ It confirms what i suspected about most truck drivers - that they would protect us, if they saw something like that. But i thought i might be biased. My Grandpa was a truck driver.
It also causes me to worry (even more) about our justice system. What was that guy even doing out in public, let alone driving a truck? It sounds like, between this lady and the other drivers, they've got a serial killer back in prison where he belongs. Well done, gentlemen! ❤ I hope he stays there for life.

Also for child support out of Michigan for a child that was born while my ex wife and I were still married but I was overseas, DNA proved kid wasn't mine.

Dude she can't name the company for legal reasons like they might try to sue her. Hopefully if there's a lawsuit they will at least pay her a settlement for what she went through. The company name isn't as important because a lot of companies hire people who have been charged with felonies before. The guys that helped her don't need to be named either as they have a right to privacy and safety. If she might be pursuing a court case then she can't name him likely. It doesn't mean that it didn't happen. As for yourself no one is saying you are bad for having felonies it was just the point of the drivers that have sex crimes and assault in their past .I have friends that served time in prison.

Im a female driver .....a man followed me into the restroom, he tried to push the door open , it was locked , then he went into the stall next to mine and stood on the toilet to look at me, i screamed bloody murder @ the TA truck stop in Ontario California in broad day light....my husband was in the truck and i left my phone, i just went in to use the restroom ,brush my teeth and wash my face ...he was a black male 5'11 270 lb , glasses , ugly with old boots ....

This announcement needs to be spread in the Van Lifer community. I am a solo female Nomad, occasionally I stop over at a Truck Stop if I’m enroute and it is too late to find a place to park. Non-trucker here. I have a *uck-it bucket in my car for when I need to pull over near questionable places. Trash bags, kitty litter. Firstly, for my IBD striking at the worst time. Secondly, horror stories from stealth campers and lady truckers.

Ladies, head to a camping store or an online retailer and purchase a composting toilet for your rig. They have absolutely no odor and you can dump the composted material into a grocery bag and toss it in any trash can. This will 100% eliminate the need to leave your rig at night when you need to use the restroom. It will also mean you can stay inside your rig when it’s raining or snowing as well. Stay safe out there, ladies!

Know your surroundings, take a self defense class, and always carry some form of defense! ex: pepper spray,keys, bear spray, knitting needle~ whatever it may be, know HOW to use it in case of a potential assault!
I feel the trucking company should be named. It is public knowledge now since the Police were involved. Dont get out of your vehicle at night if you dont need to I say. Today you need eyes in the back of the head as well. 👀

I drove truck for 5 years. But I've been armed in someway shape or form since I was 6. I'm almost 50 now. That is a lifetime of being afraid of being assaulted, k-napped, or un-alived. I always have a blade, knucks, spray and a lighter. Always. Such is the life of an American woman. I am so glad she lived to tell the tale.

Carry yourself some stones in a pillow case doubled tie gives good extensions when swinging and light easy to handle. Couple good swaps to a face and stomach and knees will do it. You wont get winded either even if your outshape . Fights only last 2min tops .especially in our industry.
I have to use locks for various things. I keep them in a sock😊
If anyone asks about them, you just say they're your pet rocks sleeping in a pillowcase!!! hahaahahhahha

I am not a truck driver- I have no idea why I watched this- but I am a female who escaped an attack like this in my youth and understand on a deep level how jarring this is.
For you and anyone one that gives you the shoulda- woulda speeches- YOU JUST HAD TO PEE. THAT PERSON IS A CRIMINAL. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO ADJUST THEIR LAW ABIDING LIFE FOR A CRIMINAL MENTALITY.
But you survived. You're trying to put good out in the world and warn others. You were rational and fair to all businesses, coworkers & police.

Always be aware of you surroundings! I have been trucking since 1994. Had a Dart driver try and get into my truck at Clearwater MN back in the day. I scared him off. And he taught me a lesson. I thought I was in a safe place. And no I did not get out of my truck as I was parked behind the back row on the street. I was born at night but not last night. But I never dreamed someone would try and get in my truck, but that guy did!
I'm glad you're still here to share your story. I listen to true crime podcasts. There are so many missing and unnamed remains found. The FBI estimates there are about 15 traveling serial killers active this very day. Be willing to defend yourself with deadly force. 🌼

It's a bummer that happened. That being said, I DON'T EVEN like walking around Truck Stops at night and I always have something handy for protecting and have my head on a swivel. So yeah. Doesn't matter where, just BE aware.

Thanks to the flat bedder, bull hauler, & this woman driver who was strong enough & willing to fight back, this female driver survived a harrowing experience. Many times this ends up so much worse. Thank God that the creep was caught & taken away to face JUSTICE.
