Most arcade racing games don't have a gearbox. Not only that, but most people don't even have a manual where they need a gear box. So even if there was one, most likely they wouldn't know about it. Especially if they don't really drive.
They were playing maximum tune (latest iirc was 5? Havent played in awhile) and theres no turbo. And they were probably driving auto since they dont know how to drive let alone drive manual. Theres also a comback mechanic so if they just dont crash they would eventually overtake the leader

I think the clowns are weighted, with the ones on the top row much heavier than the smaller clowns below, so it requires quite a bit of force in order to topple it
