Loved the "clean as a whistle" comment! Congrats on the anniversary, nice you could be together for this one. Enjoy Emma every day she will grow up so fast it will amaze you.
Hi Orville, thank you very much! 😀 It was amazing to spend the day together and as time goes by we hope that we will be able to spend every day of the year together thanks to the help of our wonderful Patrons like you! Emma is growing up incredibly quickly and it's miraculous watching her develop each day. Thank you and fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Hello! Yes it was very special and we appreciated every minute together. There was no need for either of us to buy anniversary gifts because Emma is the biggest gift we could ever receive! We miss you loads and can't wait to see you soon. All our love, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😘
I have no idea why anyone could give this a thumbs down, the joy in little Emma’s smile is heart warming. What a delightful child she is. Thanks for posting.
Happy Third Anniversary you two. Chris you are very clever at editing cuteness and boat refit. Emma is the cuteness your engine not so much but I am a gearhead so this DIY channel is right up my ally. Hello Emma you little sweetheart.
Hi Tom, thank you very much! We're glad you are enjoying the videos. I just went and gave Emma a kiss on the forehead and told her it was from Tom Barker. 😊 Fair winds! Chris 👍
Hi Lisa, absolutely! If there is one thing which is heaven on earth then it is playing with your baby like that... Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
I have been married for 31 years, I won't tell you how many women that has been. 🤣 Congrats to Rossella with putting up with you for three years. Actually, it is a great pleasure to congratulate such a beautiful and happy couple. Happy anniversary! Having a closeup look at that Volvo makes me glad I have a Yanmar. 😀 Good to see it is finally coming together.
Hi Jacobus, we've been together for 13 years now - we took our time getting married and thanks to our pre-marriage adventures Rossella knew exactly what she was letting herself in for before we tied the knot! 🤣 I love marine diesel engines, they are really simple and easy to work on. Fair winds! Chris 👍 (plus Rossella & Emma)
Hi Craig, thank you very much. We were certainly glad to break the pattern of me being offshore for our anniversary. Let's hope our channel takes off so the three of us can be together all year round. Fair winds! Chris 👍 (plus Rossella & Emma 😊)
Happy Anniversary :) Chris - nothing says love like a visit to Tool Station :D. I have never wanted to muck about with the inside of the engine, you make it look doable here and this is definitely something I feel more confident trying in the future. Thank you :)
Hi Jeffrey, Toolstation and a McDonald's Ice-cream: I'm an old romantic aren't I?! Seriously though, just being able to spend the day together was the best anniversary present we could ever wish for. I'm glad you are feeling more confident with tackling engine work. It's really not that difficult and you should definitely give it a try some time. Thank you for your comment and your best wishes! Cheers, Chris 👍
One day as a child I took apart a small engine while my father was at work. Needless to say he was not very impressed when he came home. He taught me a very important lesson that day when he basically said "Any idiot can take apart an engine with a hammer and vise-grips but it takes a genius to put it back together with the same tools." It loses a little in the translation but I am certain you get my point.
Thankfully there are very good detailed books available for most marine engines. If you can follow simple steps, with pictures, you can just about do anything. You already have done more than most people would even attempt.
Your videos are great. I was watching this one and when you were checking the valve clearance you put a piece of tissue in a hole and rotated one revolution. Was that from top dead center and the first cylinder? It looked random. I havent adjusted valves in a long time an will be getting a boat soon. And want to do my own maintenance as well
Hi there, thank you! I was following the procedure in the manual avdhoeff.home.xs4all.nl/zeilen_bestanden/Volvo-Penta-Type_2001-2002-2003T_Workshop-Manual.pdf When a set of valves are rocking, you rotate the engine one full revolution and then adjust those valves. Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
That's a crazy difference in price! Perhaps we should sail North! 😂 (In all seriousness though, Scotland is a stunningly beautiful country and we would love to sail there one day...) Fair winds, Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
Hi Chris Rossella, I don't know if you are still in Chatham marina? Because normally there is a lag on the video updates. My wife and I travelled down from London on the train to Chatham marina yesterday. We had a few too many drinks in Pier 5. I was surprised how nice the marina was and how Chatham had improved. We did look out for you! You're both doing a great job especially coping with a small baby on board. Originally you said you planned to stay in Chatham marina for one month, so I assume you've already left. I've watched quite a few of your videos. You are both doing a brilliant job. Well done to both of you. All the best. Kind regards. Daryl.
Hi Daryl, we really enjoyed Chatham and the marina was excellent. We have moved on from there now, but you'll see this soon in our upcoming videos. We're glad you and your wife had a lovely trip and a nice drink or three. :-)Thank you very much for your comment. Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma
Thank you Mark! Yes, the same thought did cross my mind too... That wouldn't be the first time I would have made a donation to Davy Jones' locker! Cheers, Chris 👍
Nice Video! Was wondering if when researching paint for the engine you came across anyone using cold galvanizing spray? I’m curious if that would work!
see the slots on the exhaust elbow (you painted black) between the bolts. It looks like the same slots on the exhaust manifold are blocked -- without those open all your effort on the elbow will not work correctly.
You are wrong there Dale... I had the same thought as you initially "If there are ports on the exhaust elbow, and holes in the gasket, there must be ports on the cylinder head?!" but there aren't. The cooling water simply sits against the cylinder head drawing heat away from the exhaust elbow and the area of the cylinder head around the exhaust outlet. Fair winds! Chris 👍
@@SailingBritaly hello Chris. Please interpret my comments in the most positive manner. Great family and site. Do you have a WET exhaust with rubber hose someehere where water leaves with the exhaust and then goes out the boat? That water usually comes from that exhaust elbow either from a hose from the engine into the side or from those slots in the exhaust manifold I am much more familiar with gas marine engines than diesel Volvo.
Hi Dale, I absolutely take your comment in a positive way and I initially thought exactly the same as you, that those ports on the lower part of the exhaust elbow would allow a flow of water to enter from the cylinder head below.... We do indeed have a wet exhaust, and water is most definitely injected into the exhaust elbow before being expelled via the exhaust, but this is not introduced on the underside of the elbow. It enters via the two circular ports on the exhaust elbow (aft which has a pipe running from the thermostat and pt, which comes from the cooling water distribution pipe). The cooling water enter via these two ports and the holes on the underside of the exhaust elbow simply allow some of that water to sit 'dead-headed' against the gasket area on the cylinder head. This is a lot easier to explain in person rather than via typed messages, so I hope you are able to understand what I mean! Fair winds, Chris 👍
Yes --- It is sometime done that way and those slots can be blanks. That gasket and elbow are used in several systems. Good luck and I hope your cooling problems are solved. You seem to be on the right path.
We've got it all sorted and in an upcoming video we show the engine running with an infrared thermometer demonstrating exactly what is happening while it runs with the thermostat closed and open (whilst doing a bollard pull against the pontoon). 👍
Ciao Chris, video estremamente utile e chiaro, complimenti!

Hi Dan, Emma is ageing in these videos but funny you should mention that as we're going to be uploading some videos from our cruising last year when Rossella was still pregnant! It will be nice to mix in some actual sailing vlogs with these refit videos... Fair winds! Chris, Rossella & Emma 😊
