  • Sweet bay laurel tree, the tree or shrub from which bay leaves come from, were originally found in the Mediterranean region. It is a highly regarded tree in Greek and Roman culture used as a head wreath. To learn more about the history of this plant, and uses, watch the video. It is a slow-growing plant that is very frost and wind sensitive, and prefers well-draining soil. It has culinary uses, and is fairly pest-resistant. It prefers full sun or part shade, and pH of 6-7, mostly. Other than these requirements, it is an easy plant to grow and maintain. Bay laurels like humidity, and can be grown as a houseplant as well as a topiary. Not only is it good in soups and stews, it has a long shelf life, and repels pantry moths. We are interested in plants that have medicinal properties, and culinary uses. This plant has both qualities. It is quite special. Much of my research for the plants are from Wikipedia, plant labels, and other web sources such as Medline.

Nice Laurel. Mine keep dying, but live in Seattle with lots of wind, rain and cold. After hearing you talk about it though, I might try it again! Thanks for your awesome teaching vids!!!

Bay laurel likes to be on the dry side much like lavender and rosemary do, and quite a bit of sun. Maybe plant it in a protected area under a bigger understory plant or in a pot that can be moved away from rain and wind? Hope that helps.

very interesting information, thank you. I have been watching this beautiful tree in Eureka Springs, AR. for years and wondering what it was...the leaves reminded me of my Saw Tooth Oak. I will be watching Lowe's for the Sweet Bay Laurel to plant now that I know more about it....

What zone do these grow in? I hear zone 5-10 or zone 8-9. I'm confused.

These primarily grow in zones 7-9, however there are articles that include 5-7, 5-9, etc. Plants should be grown in pots in zones 5-7, whereas it is safe to grow in the ground in zones 8-10. Potted plants can be moved to protected areas, warmer areas, during the winters. Bay laurel are hardy down to 23 degrees Fahrenheit to be safe.

Reading straight from Wikipedia. At least source it instead of plagiarizing.

Many of the times, I mention it in the video or in the comments, but if I did not, pardon me. I've added it to the comments section. I like to research about the benefits of all the plants that I grow, and relay that to others.
