Is this what they teach you a Berklee? Fr? What a joke. There’s no such thing as a top line you can’t top line a song top lining is not a thing. This is a phrase that was invented to sell you false education. They’re called lead vocals and spoiler alert no one professional writes songs like this. Not even close.
The top line includes the lead vocal and the lyrics. Sometimes it also includes backing vocals. I did take a couple of top line classes at Berklee (one undergrad and one masters, which was a couple of years after I filmed this video), but I've also done this sort of work professionally, so this video's script is mostly from my own experience. I don't exactly know what you mean by "false education", but I can assure you that top lining is a real skillset and is all over the music industry at every level. Seems like you're a little wound up, so I hope the rest of your day is better!
@@AprilKeez I’m saying …. A top line class? A masters? That really makes no sense to me. It’s a vocal line. Tell your story. Either you can or you can’t. You can’t teach that. True musicianship and art comes from learning the absolute basics and then throwing all that out the window. Music school can’t teach that. Never will. Believe me I went to conservatory lol. I’m generally wound up it’s kind of my thing. But it’s also gotten me a lot of work. My day is going fine 🤙🏾. I guessed you went to Berklee btw. It’s odd that it’s that obvious.
@@madacetv It's cool that things come so naturally to you, but if this is the case, this video was clearly not intended for you. I'd urge you to do more research into songwriting pedagogy, especially the theory inherent in melody and lyric writing, if this is something you're passionate about.
@@AprilKeez I understand it wasn’t intended for me. I went into a small rabbit hole trying to figure out what modern music schools are “teaching” people these days which led to being disappointed by your video. I have no need to research pedagogy I was taught and have taught with the Suzuki method. It was excellent. Teaching music and songwriting to adults is pointless. Either you have “it” or you don’t. Those who don’t have it try to teach it. It’s not a bad thing but generally the teachers just end up teaching the same things they were taught since they are not talented enough to take their skills to the next level and really get into true artistry. Good luck with everything though 👍🏾

Nice video April
Thank you!
great vid thanx. so does top lining involve adding chord progressions 2?
Thanks! It does not include chord progressions; top lines are just lyrics and melody. 😊
So do top liners write top melodies over a beat that already complete?
Yep! The top liner provides the melody and lyrics.
@@AprilKeez but what if you already wrote the melody and lyrics...and you just need some beat? Is that still toplining?
@@aeris6187 I think it would be more of a "bottom lining" or just producing
You talk with your hands so much 😄
Stop talking with your hands so much! So distracting.
