Omg I loved this video, me and my hubby are going to be stationed there in November. You gave me some confidence that I can tackle the island and actually have a life there .
+Lovely Kourtney its definitely a different kind of duty station, but it really is fun if you take advantage of the natural beauty and proximity to major cities like Vancouver bc and Seattle
Lovely Kourtney Hi! Do you mind sharing your thoughts of this duty station? What does your family think of it thus far? I read your comment and assume you all have moved to Whidbey Island by now. My interest stems from it being on the list of places to possibly get orders to soon.
Thank you so much for this! My family is moving there in a few months. Had a little anxiety in regards to getting back and forth to the city 😩, but this was very reassuring that everything will be okay 👍🏾
Hi Tonneli, great Video! As someone considering moving to whidbey, I’m just curious how long the ferry takes to board, float and drive off? As far as commute, is it consistent? Like can you count on catching the ferry at a specific time to get to/from work everyday? Or is everyday potentially a missed ferry by a few cars, that sets you back an hour? Thanks so much for all the great info!
@@TonneliGruetter thanks so much! Ouch, that’s one heck of a commute! Is it still worth living on Whidbey or as you are a City Person are you planning to make a move back across the sound?
My husband is getting stationed there and we are moving there in march I started crying and got so upset but you make it look better than I thought lol
+Gabby the island is a mixed bag, during the winter it can be very windy (think:hurricane force winds) and days are short, but during the summer we make up for it! March is an awesome time of year to start out here! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns about what it might be like here 😊
Laura Johnson could you be more specific: do you mean the ferry, the island, the coffee trailer, or something else? To answer generally about the island; people are far more inclusive of diversity than most small towns in the NW(which can be very ethnically homogeneous) the military attracts a lot of diversity :)
+Laura Johnson ok, I see. As a white woman I can't exactly speak for the experience of an African American male. I can say that the north end of the island is very ethnically diverse, the south end is mostly retired liberal white people. Our two closest cities Seattle & Vancouver B.C. are also extremely diverse bit like all majors cities have a sometimes problematic history with race. I have never seen an outward act of hate on Whidbey island, but being a military community there are a fair amount of southern folks who didn't seem to get the memo us NW'ers aren't very proud of their confederate pride. Long story short my co-workers, friends, & family who belong to the African American community are happy here, but I definitely can not speak outside my own experience with any authority. What part of the island are you 2 looking at? It's a beautiful place!
My mom just moved to Oak Harbor, and I wanna join her so badly! Whidbey is such a beautiful place to live!
im moving out there in a week or so...your video sheds light on a lot of questions I had, thank you !!!!
Having lunch and a couple of cold ones at Ivar's on Lake Union on a beautiful summer day.....perfect. ;-)

I'm sorry I wouldn't wish this place on no one
We are in Mukilteo also! Husband is at Everett Naval Base!
+Brit+Con I wish we were scheduled in Everett! The BAH on island is way too low :(

I only did the ferry once while we lived in WA. It was fun and we saw whales swimming that day! I miss WA so much.
Ohhhh you were so LUCKY that is truly the best! I've only been lucky enough to see the whales twice,

Since the pandemic, much has changed. Typical ferry wait time is now usually 1.5 hours, with sailing taking about 30 including load time

I'd say it's much harder now, unless you happen to be a healthcare worker, then you get a special pass to skip the ferry line.
