@SickBiker, nice video and good explanation of the XC bikes itself.
      But.........
Other then what type of bike is meant for what type of mountainbiking, what confuses me most is, what is Cross Country?
What does a Cross Country route look like. What should it be, and shouldn`t be in it?
I just got myself a Centurion Backfire Pro800 with 27.5" tyres (www.centurion.de/de-de/bike/2018/backfire-pro-800-214) here in germany, that has a less aggressive geomantie. I got it, so I can go out in the forrest and do some riding.
To me, that would be XC, or not?
I am confused on how the different types of trails for the different types of bikes look like.
Road riding is pretty simple, since it`s tarmac anywhere I would take my Felt Roadbike.
Perhaps you could put up a video explaining the different types of trails matching the different types of bikes?

XC bikes are GREAT all-around bikes. I disagree that they are ‘only’ for racing. They are very comfortable, lighter and make going distance and uphill much easier - all great things for beginners.

I'm going to try to clear up some things he said... As it is confusing. Most entry level HARDTAILS are for cross country. However he is talking about cross country racing. These are courses with technical elements like rock gardens and others. If you buy an entry level bike he calls them sport bikes I believe. Possibly a bit of a language difference. He is very knowledgable for sure and I like his vids. Cross country for non racers means anything from gravel to riding long rides in gentle to not so gentle terrain. You generally do not do big drops or jumps with cross country bikes . Many riders may be skilled enough to do it but the bikes are not meant for these. His bikes remember are race bikes and many cross country bikes are heavier and not for racing. Once you start getting into suspension say 120 and above you start getting into more of a trail bike which encompasses more all around riding. Cross country bikes come in both hardtail and Full susp versions. Race bikes tend to be much lighter and more expensive. Hope this helps some who did not understand.

im a beginner and bought myself a cross country bike (hardtail - 1600 $). i love it and do all stuff with it (uphill, downhill, jumps). ofcourse at the beginning you need to build up some muscles. the easiest way to do this is just to ride your bike lol :D and thats why i love riding my xc mtb. you can build up core muscle strenght, driving fast, jumping around, exploring the woods and just having fun.

Good video, I think many people took from this video that XC are uncomfortable. I don't really think that's true.
XC is kind of a broad thing at this point, just as "road bike" is. There are many kinds of XC bikes at this point and this video generally adresses the real race version of these bikes.
I'd actually say that XC bikes generally if you're getting one with a more relaxed geometry is something of an optimal do-it-all bike, especially if you want to go far.
When drawing a paralell to road bikes you could compare enduro to racing, and gravel to cyclocross, one doesn't take into consideration comfort in order for it to meet competition rules and to go faster for professional riders. That doesn't mean that enduro is worse, it's for those guys who doesn't compete and is willing to sacrifice 5 % efficiency for comfort and fun features.

As long as you're not FULL SENDING IT down 20 feet drops, a decent XC full-suspension bike with 100-120 mm travel is quit capable on fairly rough trails. My 2017 GIANT ANTHEM (alum. frame) with 27.5 x 2.35 Knobby Nick tires frt/rr is all the bike I'll ever need. And it's lightweight, a huge bonus both on road and thru the trails. It's not the cheapest bike at $2,800, but much more sensible than spending up to $10,000 for having multiple bikes - but that's my personal 2 cents. Good luck and have fun to all who venture into the mountain biking sport. Choose your bicycle wisely no matter what your financial budget allows or riding lifestyle and your future self will thank you greatly.
Edited P.S. That's my third bike, 2nd bike was a '95 GIANT YUKON 26 inch h/t with measly 70mm susp. fork, 1st bike Huffy 24 inch mountain bike. I'm hoping this ANTHEM will be my last bike, as my biology won't likely let me outgrow it.

My $500 Motobecane Fantom 29 is definitely an XC bike. It's geometry is almost identical to your Cannondale. It came with lightweight rims, WTB Nano 2.1 tires, SRAM drivetrain (3x8 -- lowest gear is a Shimano 34T Megarange). It performs amazingly. A couple of my buddies have trail bikes and often get left behind on climbs.
The real question is.......how did you get out in the woods with TWO bikes? LOL

Some good information in this video. However, it is pretty condescending to say, you shouldn't buy a cross country mountain bike unless you are going to be a racer. All you mortals should stick to crappy $500 bikes. There are tens of thousands of xc bikes sold every year to people who will never race. Cross country bikes offer versatility, efficiency and a closer feel for the trail than trail bikes or sports bikes (Kmart bikes?). A better approach would be to advise non racers to consider the difficulty of trail they are riding. It is true that you can get in trouble in a hurry riding a xc bike on an advanced technical trail. I have been mountain biking for 30 years. Over that time, most of my bikes have been xc hardtails. To me, a trail bike with big cushy suspension feels like riding a comfy chair around in the woods. I have had some epic crashes that I probably would not have had on a squishy bike but I have also had some epic fun that I would not have had on a squishy bike.

thank you! I just bought a Scott scale 940 for my first mtb and I might race someday when I get fast but probably not. this guy's video is discouraging to newbies like me. I went for an xc bike cause I'm in it for cardio, I want to go fast and keep training to be faster. I'm not trying to "send it", just wanna go fast.

if it feels like riding comfy chair, try switching from green trail to blue at least, idk. Also, xc hardtail is nowhere close in versatility compared to trail hardtails with plus tires, 140 travel, droppost and slack headtube.

  • @LJ-yt2io

Adding to what's not already been said. Most new and experienced riders that buy long travel trail or Enduro bikes ride much tamer trails or at lower speeds than the bike is designed for, wasting energy on a bike that's too soft. Some folks commented that XC is for beginners. This is wrong, Denny is right. They're nimble and fast, but can be set up to be a LITTLE LESS FORGIVING. If you're looking to get in shape and want to PEDAL, XC bikes provide a positive feedback loop. The faster the bike rolls, the faster you'll WANT to PEDAL. Before you know it, you'll be dropping pounds and getting fitter all the time, and you'll come home each time with a smile on your face!

right? it's the closest a mountain bike can be to a road bike in terms of weight and frame angles so i really don''t see why it would be bad for commuting and riding on road. Of course it's worse than a road bike for that purpose but that is besides the point of bike versatility. Only a person owning 5+ bikes would say something like that. And the argument for the saddle is just like - switch it for long rides and set it lower? lol

An XC bike that’s only for riding 90 minutes?! That’s absurd! When I was racing off road, we often had races that went longer than 2 hours. You need to toughen your butt up. You should be able to spend 5+ hours on an XC bike. And even if I only did a 90 minute race, I required an hour long warm up beforehand. So a 90 minute race meant a 2&1/2 to 3 hour day.

I disagree when you said XC bikes are made for racing in laps. XC bikes and Downhill bikes are both mountain bikes and the purpose of the Klunkers who have made the XC bikes is to add gears, suspension, braking system, geometry... so that anyone can go anywhere in a bike. That is climb mountains, off-roading, trails, mud, rivers, all-terrain... Should have included the history of XC bikes.

Hi to Berlin :) I don't know SunTour Lytro fork, but if it's similar to Axon, then it's a good one. 8 kg bike for 97 kg can indeed be a bit fragile for a TERRAIN use. The rigid fork, depending on the brand can be as strong as the suspensed one, but once more not necessarily for MTB rides of a 97 kg rider. He can loose the weight on a road quickly though :)

So if I just want a super lightweight bike that can be ridden on road, gravel, and some trails, what bike would it be? Is it not possible? I love speed, so what, do I just get a motorcycle? But I want to go on adventures, all the while getting great fitness and health benefits. All I want my bike to be is to be lightweight (20-25lbs), that would make it speedy, a little bit comfortable, be able to go off road on some hills (not too rocky or aggressive because I like to go camping), be able to be on the road for some commute and ride with family comfortably and fast. Is there a bike for me? I just want one bike. I can not afford 2.

So I wanted to buy a new bike, a hardtail. And I was looking at used bikes, new bikes. Something didn't feel right, my neck was hurting, I felt all my weight on my hands, it was like doing pushups all the time (btw, I also used to work out at the gym so I'm not completely a vegetable). I didn't have fun, I didn't like it.
After months of investigating, trying out bikes etc I finally understood I was testing XC bikes. And for some reason, EVERYONE in Romania has XC hardtails. It's crazy. Also, all the cheaper hardtails are XC. Expensive ones? Carbon, but still XC. This is what's selling FOR SOME REASON. All of them with super-low stack height, and none of my friends really ever knew what they were riding, they just knew they had a "good bike" with "good components".
Components mean nothing. I hate XC bikes, I love trail bikes. I feel more in control, I can see nature around me instead of being forced into that face down position with neck pain.

Trail is not that extreme, maybe you are thinking about Enduro? Trail I think is better for beginners than an real XC bike. Trail bikes are usually a little bit more robust and comfy when riding in the woods. Pozdrav Srbine!

Help! yesterday i checked on Trek XC Caliber 8 2019 here in Kathmandu. Will it be a good choice if i plan to do some high mountain bikepacking in this machine? The terrain i will face are rugged, steep Himalayan ups & downs ranging from altitude of 2000 mts to 4500-5000 mts asl. The salesguy also proposed Trek Marlin 7. What would be suitable for me?

Most beginners purchase a cross country bike, because of prohibitive prices on trail bikes. Not necessarily all XC bikes are made for racing, they’re made to get beginners into the sport at a not unfathomable price point. It’s just a fact that wider wheels, wider tires, longer travel suspension, powerful brakes, and progressive geometry simply cost more.

Hello and thanks for the video! Question, I ve got myself an Author 29er Rival 2018 model (what type of bike you call it? Entry level?) and I'm riding bike since kid but never for long periods of time but, I ve got the bike for 3 months now and although my butt hurt like he'll in the beginning, I now ride 30-45 km per 2 days and I feel good! So I start to love this bike and that type of driving(aggressive, been able to jump curves, been able to ride down steps.) What type of bike would you recommend me? Also I m a big dude 1.93 m.

Danny, I purchased the f-si carbon 5. You did influence the purchase a little and I really like the bike. Question, my old dropper post does not fit so I need a new post. I was thinking of forgoing the dropper and going with the carbon Cannondale "save" seat post as you have on your f-si. I know differences, how to you like the "compliance" flex of the seat post? Is it to bouncy?
    Thanks

    Hi,
I am about to buy a Cannondale scalpel with Lefty 2.0 for amateur XC races. I heard horrible stories about the reliability and service maintenance. Can you share some of your experience on Lefty service demand comparing to traditional forks? I would appreciate your comments. Thank you. Mike

Mihály Bodócs I have a lefty and have been using is for several months now with no issues. I also work at a cannondale dealer and we work on lefty’s all the time. While lefty’s do encounter more or different problems than a normal fork, everything on a lefty is fixable or serviceable pretty easily by a cannondale dealer. Best feeling fork I’ve ever ridden

Haha, Yeah, I have a specialized Stumpjumper FSR XC I got it (silver base model) in 1999(?) It's all original and has always been kept in my bedroom. It's almost spotless though 21 years old! I entered it in a Duathlon 3 years ago, people looking at it asked if it was new(!) It's really aggressive and yeah super uncomfortable for long 6-8 hour rides, kills my ass. But it's the best design I've ever seen even amoung modern bikes. Happy riding!

Any suggestions for a starter bike for someone that would like to possibly compete in XC? I'd like to go for a full on XC bike, but it doesn't seem there are any meant so much for someone training or intermediate level, so I wouldn't have to make such a huge investment in the beginning, in case I cannot eventually compete? Maybe there is but I don't have so much time to research! If there is anyone with any suggestions, I would love to hear them :)
