  • Macular degeneration is a condition affecting the macula, which is the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. There are two main types of macular degeneration: wet and dry.
    Dry Macular Degeneration:
    - Dry macular degeneration is the more common type, accounting for about 80-90% of all cases.
    - It occurs when the cells in the macula gradually break down, leading to the thinning and eventual atrophy of the macular tissue.
    - Drusen, which are yellow deposits under the retina, are often present in the early stages.
    - Vision loss with dry AMD tends to be gradual and may progress over many years.
    Wet Macular Degeneration:
    - Wet macular degeneration is a progression of dry AMD.
    - It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, leading to scarring and distortion of vision.
    - Symptoms may include sudden changes in vision, such as distortion or the appearance of straight lines as wavy or crooked.
Both types of macular degeneration can cause central vision loss, making it difficult to read, drive, or recognize faces. Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and management of macular degeneration, as early intervention can help slow its progression and preserve vision.
