R01 Minitrix 9F Evening Star Repair and Restoration

- The first loco I recorded in my 'Jobs In' book, way back in early 2016! Through various attempts at finding suitable parts, I have eventually pieced together a working Minitrix model N209, 9F, Evening Star. Hope you enjoy this struggle!

I went down the same route in repairing my Evening Star. I now have about 21 Minitrix and Lima locomotives which I purchased as damaged on Ebay and repaired them. It was your videos that inspired me to be able to do this along with John Heath's minitrix maintenance website. I felt I was saving the life of a vintage peice of history that may have otherwise ended up in land fill. The irony is I may even have ended up bidding against you at some point on Ebay. Keep up the great work. I love what you're doing as to many other viewers

Now that the parts I needed for my 9F have been sitting in a box for a few weeks, you have encouraged me to get started on the repairs of mine. Great job :)

The F9 is not a loco I would normally look at. I am not a steam guy, but more of a diesel guy. The F9 is one of my dad's locos and I have decided to restore it in his memory and also put up a heretige line just for that. I wish to convert it to DCC too, but one thing at a time. For now I am happy I managed to get the tiny pin into its socket on the pushrods :) Next to change the motor :)

Love your videos , there’s loads servicing options gauge , your about the only guy doing N Gauge . I find your videos really helpful in looking after my fleet of n Gauge locos
Great job again Jim.👍 The more I watch your videos, the less scared I am of the gubbins inside these N scale locos. I've got a couple that need some work before they will run properly and my own sm,all fleet have been stored for about 30 years and will need some routine maintenance. The annoying thing is; they were professionally serviced all those years ago and hardly ran at all before they were packed away.

Hi Jim - great video - very useful as always. You mentioned John Heath in one of your other comments. Do you know if John does DCC conversions and also how to contact him? I've looked at his excellent website but don't see any contact details.
I also had the same issue with the con-rod coming out of the cylinder block, for me on both sides. Getting it back and in the right orientation was probably one of the fiddliet things I've ever done.😮💨
Hi Mike, thanks for looking in. I've tried to find info on contacting John but to no avail. I did find a few videos on fitting DCC to minitrix locos, but not the 9f. I haven't ventured in that direction, either, I'm afraid so I can't offer any advice, but when I do, I'll be scouring RUclips again! I hope you get your problem sorted out soon. Take care, Jim L
could i ask please - i have an oo train set but nowhere to set it up so i have taken up our sons old n scale set, there are a number of trains, minitrix, tomix, life like and bachmann usa but which of all the makes do you find most robust and easiest to work on please?
Hi Ian, thanks for looking in. You'll find n-gauge tricky to begin with (I down-scaled when I moved house) but it's great fun and you can get a lot of railway in a small space! Let's know how you get on.
As to locos I work with well, Minitrix are probably my favourites as the engineering is good. I work on many makes (whatever I can find second-hand) and each have their own characteristics. Many of the older models are more robust, such as PIKO or Arnold. Hope that helps. Cheers, Jim L

Sometimes they come up on ebay but you may need to look for a 'spares or repair' to use as a donor. Sorry, can't help more than that. Cheers
I am 99% sure that the Tramfabriek coreless conversion for the Britannia fits the 9f ... or can be made too very easily. I got one to try on one of my 9fs, but never got round to it as they run quite well. So far I've done two old Gafar 8fs, two old 20's and a Dapol 2mt. They do transform these old tired ladies.
I’ve learnt a bit more , n guage , how about some dcc chip install in older models from scratch. LoL Robert In Edinburgh
Just found you video and I’ve subscribed. I’m also stripping down a minitrix 4-6-8. Looking to dcc but how does you get into the engine? I can only find 2 screws that detach the wheels and the other detaches the tender. But you have the wheels separated though, nice and complete… what’s the approach you use pls.
Hi, thanks for your subscription. I hope you find something to help you. The body of the minitrix pacifics (Britannia, A1s, etc) are held on by a chimney screw, often through the 'dome ' in the centre. Check out a guy called John Heath who hosts a site called minitrix.org.uk. Hope that helps. Cheers, Jim L
