That Armco hardhat brought back so many memories. When I was a kid, everyone wanted to work at the steel mill or one of the plants. I was working as a contractor in many of the plants back then. I was making good money and always had a job . Suddenly the bottom fell out and, for the first and last time, I had to draw an unemployment check. Thanks for the video.
This is probably 1987. Skyline at the very end shows the BofA tower and Wells Fargo tower, built in '83 and Shamrock hotel was not torn down until '87.
I was earning $11 an hour in a grocery store when the bst came in 1982, two years later I was in the Navy...came back to Houston in 1990 to catch the energy upswing. It's been a wild ride!!
My refinery engineering job lasted until 1984, Between 1980 (when the downturn started), and then, I witnessed the pawnshops filling up, and new developments being torn down. At first, I was able to buy used stuff cheap. Later, the exodus started, mostly with men. I was lucky. I knew it was coming so I got ready to leave Houston. I went west.
