Let Governor Wike hear this from your mouth, you will be expelled from Rivers state. Wike said he is from Bini. The confusion of the story is that your ancestors lived in a settlement that was ruled as part of the Great Bini Kingdom and they migrated to settle in the Ikwere lands and surroundings to run out of that dominion. That does not mean they were of Bini ethnic tribe. The trouble today is that it was misunderstood that they are from Bini meaning they were a Bini ethnic tribe. A good example is the United Kingdom of Great Britain ruled by an English dynasty. Are Scottish, Welsh people English too?

I am from Mbieri in Imo State, born in the North before the civil war. My godfather was Ikwerre, though late. Both the people of Bonny, Opobo Ndoni, Egbema, Ibusa, Asaba, Ikwerre, Ndoki, Etche, even Ijaws, and Edos, Igalas, Sagbama were members of the then Igbo Union, and identified themselves as Easterners. A good number of them attended the two Secondary Schools established by the Igbo Union in the 1950s; namely Igbo Union Grammar Schools Kano and Kafanchan.

Nnna mehn thanks a lots for this discoveries it amazes me to see my lovely people everywhere more stunning to see them preserving their Igbo heritage. What happened here is King Jaja of of Opobo is the founder of this great city and he’s from Nkwrere in Imo State . Been so brave as Igbo men has been in ages was able to walk away from his captives by paying them ransom and becoming a free man . Been so smart instead of going back to Nkwrere for fear of being kidnapped again he decided to establish the present day Opobo kingdom and became their King that gave him the name King Jaja of Opobo, therefore this kingdom will remain Igbo kingdom and no one can change it. The Igbo language being spoken here made it impossible for anyone to change the narrative of this place came to be what it is today. King Jaja will always be our hero , with love❤❤❤❤❤

And you need to know your own history, because even if you try using the false notion that we were all “Igbo and living in harmony”, know that prior to colonization there was no Pan-Igbo identity and there defiantly wasn’t no harmony/peace between Igbo ethnicities. This is interesting to note that the ancestors of the Jumbo family of Bonny, River State came from Obowo in Imo State. Little wonder that during the Civil War, the Jumbos fought on the side of Biafra.

The Commander of the BOFF (Biafran Organization of Freedom Fighter), a paramilitary organization during the Civil War was Mr. Jumbo from Bonny. He even spoke Igbo better than any Igbo person. History has it that the ancestors of the Bonny people were from Obowo, in Imo State, and that of Opobo is Nkwerre, also of Imo State.
The problem since after the war was, and is political. After the war in 1970, Commodore Alfred Diette-Spiff, the current Amayanabo (King) of Twon-Brass in Bayelsa State was appointed by the Gowon Administration as the Governor of the then Rivers State. He was instructed not to return all Igbo properties to their owners; while other States of the Federation returned all Igbo properties to their rightful owners. The purpose of the refusal to return Igbos' properties was to create tension, hate, discord and aparthy between the Southeasterners and Rivers State. This was also to help create more dichotomy between the people who were and are brothers; because when brothers fight and quarrel, their enemies are happy rejoice.
That is why up until today, the Igbo speaking people of Rivers, some in Delta, Edo, Bayelsa claim not to be Igbos; even if they speak the Igbo language.
Before the Civil War, we had Igbo Union, which comprised all the Igbos, Ijaws, Okrika and other Igbo speaking people of Nigeria. Even the Igala people of the present day Kogi State were also in the meeting. When you visit Port Harcourt, (but remember that before 1947, what we know as Port Harcourt today was called Igwe Ocha which is an Igbo name. The king of England renamed it Port Harcourt to honour Mr. Harcourt, who was the King's Representative in Eastern Nigeria, because it was Mr. Harcourt that helped build the rail line from Enugu to Igwe Ocha, so as to transport coal from Enugu to Igwe Ocha, and then to England. If you visit Amadi Village (also called Amadi Ama); around Trans Amadi in Port harcourt, they all speak and understand Igbo.
Look at my brother, Asari Dokubo, who was busy ranting and insulting the Igbos, when History reminded him that his Grandparents were Igbo slaves, even Channel TV Anchor, Seun, also reminded him of his ancestors. Did you hear him talk again?

So don't present tins as if Jumbos in Bonny fought on d side of Biafra bcos they r Igbos while oda families in Bonny fought against Biafra. No !
D whole of d old Eastern Region was wot formed Biafra. No family in Bonny fought against Biafra till d war ended.
Besides, Jumbo is not d only family with Igbo ancestry. Many Igbos were bought by d Ijaws & enculturated during d slave trade era. Just as Ijaws did 2 Jaja, they did 2 oda Igbos & Ibibios

I am sorry my brother, @ayebatarijuliapaxagiri2767, I did not mean to state that only the Jumbos or the Jumbo family fought in the Nigerian Civil on the Biafra side. My reason for mentioning the Jumbos is because during the Nigerian Civil war, Colonel Jumbo from Bonny was the Commander or the Head of the newly formed Commando Brigade. Other notable names on the Biafra side included Maj. Gen David Ejoor from Warri, some very good soldiers from Sagbama and others from the present South-south region, which, of course, everyone knows is part of the former Eastern Region.
The region was broken into two, Southeast and South-south to reduce the strength and influence of that (Eastern) region. Also, the powers that be (recent leaderships of Nigeria) have been busy sowing seeds of discord and instability in the region, simply to disunite the former Eastern Region, while they are doing everything to unite their region(s).
Please @ayebatarijuliapaxagiri, accept my sincere apology for mentioning the name of only one family.

Unfortunately, History has been distorted by both the colonialists and the Federal Government of Nigeria. First, the Igala man has his ancestors from Nri. The Igbos, Igala and the Bini are blood relatives. The history is there. Has these people ever asked why the Mid-West Region was carved out of the former Western Region in 1963?REASON: Awolowo rejected the Edo and Deltans as Westerners because, according to him, "they are not Yorubas". It was Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe who caused the creation of the then Mid-West Region. Since after the Civil War, the Federal Government, the Hausa-Fulani bought over the Yorubas to turn against the Igbos, because the Igbo will be the obstacle to the Islamization, of Nigeria. The Ooni of Ife even said it that the Igbo are more than 2500 years older than the Yorubas in Nigeria. The Igala, unfortunately forgot their origin because of being bought over by the Federal Government. They claim to have come from Jukun in Benue and Taraba States. If that is true, why is it that the Igala man cannot speak an atom of Jukun, instead he speaks the Igbo language fluently and his Igala language? This is how Asari Dokubo was fooled by the Nigeria's politicians to berate the Igbos, forgetting that his grandfather was from Abia State. If some of these men claim Bini ethnicity, why is it that they do not understand an atom of the Bini language, and do not speak it either, but speak Igbo?

If an ancestry DNA testing is carried out , most people from opobo will have a high or some percentage of DNA similarity to Indigenous Ibos.Slavery did not only displace Blacks in the diaspora, it also separated and displaced Blacks in Africa. Other Igbos are just amazed and surprised to see the foolishness of an identity crisis to these Igbo people. The truth is, it was the handiwork of the Fulanis. The Fulanis brainwashed them that the "Igbos" will come and take your oil, but the Fulanis seized it instead and controlled it till today and the indigenous people got nothing. I'm from Anioma in Delta state, and there is talk of our people migrating from Bini. This may have been true for a small percentage of my people. This little documentary is just an attempt to de-igbonize Opobo. Captain Crow, an English slave trader in his 1830 book on Bonny, recorded that the first inhabitants of Bonny were Igbos. He also recorded that the then king of Bonny was an Igbo man, and that the inhabitants of Bonny were chiefly Igbo, and also that the majority of the slaves in Bonny were Igbo people.
What this means is that the ruling class of Bonny was Igbo. The middle class and citizenry of Bonny were mainly Igbos. The slave class were also mainly Igbos.
This is just an attempt to only claim that the Igbo presence in Bonny and Opobo was through slave trade, when it had already been recorded nearly two hundred years ago that Bonny was Igboland by a slave trader who should know, based on his associations with Bonny people.

We don’t dress the same way or have the same culture, we don’t even answer the same names. the only similarity is the language and our indigenous language is ibani. Nigerians history and historian's. Has so much been Igbophobinised that there is confusion when issues of the Igbos are discussed, To things straight a bit the man you interviewed the mother is luckily from my place in umuahia, our grand parents speaks igbani in the Palace . I had opportunity to also speak some and they believed that they where from Ubani(bonny), and Opopo axis. There is a movement people down play so much before the coming of the Benin kingdom an the Ogiso kingdom existed which was a multi ethnic with Igbos and ijaws at it disintegration came movement of both, at place settled they developed into a new kingdom, In history there is always movement and looking for greener pastures. These gave rise to some groups ( Igbos and ijaws) living bonny for hinterland as far as umuahia and beyond looking for their greener pastures and the kinds vice versa,
In discussion sometimes with an Elderly man he traced till the Ogiso kingdom even beyond where they were warriors. Even Asari Dokubo once remember his Idiaba Igbo warriors lineage. Now Jaja an Igboman from Bonny came to establish a kingdom in Opopo with some people definitely there were people with whom they are related, who are they the Ndokis who are likely to have left earlier than them.
Now confusion my brother said his father were from Nkwere but he is not an igboman.
I know it we are one I can claim igbani even more than many of them who are in bonny or Opopo. Professor Coker 's mother is my father's auntie, in bonny the Royal family are also related to us, in Ndoki, Akwuette, even Ikweres were related. Not through marriage but some uncles of our great great great grand fathers are there. When wike was talking about Benin I laughed because the Igbos in Benin kingdom were igbos in Benin kingdom were not Benin or Edo NO!!!.
Let us leave for next time.

Opobo and Bonny speak Igbo mixed with ibani. Ibani is the real dialect of the people and ibo was just a trading language which later became dominant as their real dialect, ibani, was reserved for special use. The youth eventually started speaking the trading language however, Opobo and Bonny (Okoloma) are of Ibani(Ijaw) Origin. Jaja was just a leader of the group of Ibani people that left Bonny to found Opobo. Jaja was not the founder of Opobo but a leader of the founders of Opobo town. Opobo was named after one of the sons of Perekule, the current ruling dynasty in Bonny, by the name of Opubo. The version of ibo spoken in Opobo did not start in Opobo town but was used while they were still in Bonny. The Bonny culture at the time of Jaja was that a slave can earn his/her freedom and become a citizen through naturalization. A naturalized citizen can aspire to any hight in the society except that he can not be a king. So Jaja and several other ex slaves took advantage of these opportunities and grew. I must state here that the slaves were not only from ibo, some were from ibibio, effik etc. History has it that the Ndoki people also have ijaws in them. When you talk of Opobo culture, it is mainly Ibani culture and not ibo, there may be little infusions going from ibani to ibo but barely the other way round as a naturalized citizen has to adapt to the culture of the host. As you know, the ibos are good traders and can transfer some of these ibani culture to their native lands just like we are seeing today in Nollywood and the infusion of Arab and European culture through religion, names etc. Nigerian official language is English but Nigerians are not English people.

Certain traditional & cultural rites r performed, u undergo som sort of initiation. So u cannot later on betray or backstab ur family.
