      Keep on keeping on. I wish I could afford one. It's the perfect phone for me, too perfect. Physical keyboard, minimal launcher, full Google Play support, e-Ink screen. Just. Perfect for my needs of just texting and writing and not much else. I assume the high price is because of economy of scale and R&D?

      Nobody is answering this. What's the battery autonomy ? Because I would think of this more like an extra phone I'd take with me when in the wilderness, if like for other e-ink devices it can stay on for days.

    The main issue with minimal phones is that society expects you to have a smart phone - you need authenticator or banking apps just to do your job and function in the world. Having the full play store is such a game changer for stuff like that, avoiding the potential security risks or lack of functionality with side loading.

    I had the LG Wing for over a year and my favorite thing about it was a position LG never advertised and you didn't get to try: Rotating the open phone 90 degrees so the big screen is in portrait like a regular phone and you get a small screen on whichever side you are not holding the phone on. RUclips on the tiny screen while regularly browsing the internet on the main screen with zero compromises was awesome

    • @PsionicFrost
      @PsionicFrost 10 months ago +258

      That sounds like the most genuinely useful way to use it; I almost always watch content via PIP on a phone, that's just the ultimate version of it.

      @arthurkallinen 10 months ago +48

      I kinda really want that phone, I first heard of it when Linus almost ended up with it for the 30day challenge. But I have S25U, so it would be such a downgrade, that the screen is not worth it.

    • @achillesa5894
      @achillesa5894 10 months ago +96

      I really think the form factor has potential, more so than today's foldables actually (I disagree with Arun here). Flips are neat because they are compact but you don't really use them any differently. Folds would be the main competitor but I always felt like they are too big of a phone, too small of a tablet (to steal a quote from LTT). The Wing on the other hand feels like a better extension of the standard phone form factor.

    Little mention of the Lg G5's big advantage - changing out a battery quickly for a full one mid day after heavy use. The batteries were cheap and decent sized, but it helped a lot with charge anxiety. This was before the battery technology of today meant the batteries lasted the whole day. I loved the G5 and was sad I could never find another phone that had an easy swap-able battery. The add on accessories were kind of an after thought.

    Something I don't like about minimalist phone, is that these phones sells less functionality for more money. I mean, I'm okay if it's priced around 200 usd, but 500?? I know that they use 'premium' parts to compensate for the less functionality they offered, but charging 500 usd for a phone that's 'minimalist'?? That alone is just outrageous.

    • @Guille8766

    • @Random_dud31
      @Random_dud31 10 months ago +93

      The problem is that volume of sales matter more than parts cost.
      If the minimal phone sold 50 million a year, then they could sell it for 150 bucks. But if they only sell a few 100, 000s a year, then its hard to sell it for less than 400 bucks. You know, Economies of scale

    I bought the Z fold 2 back in 2021, and the entire phone was ruined after about a year because a tiny fragment of metal in my pocket stuck into the inside screen. That plastic screen just isn’t durable enough, and I just couldn’t justify spending that much on another one that is so vulnerable. The swivel phone, however, could offer most of the fun without the soft mushy screen.

    Using the LG Wing as my primary phone since launch.. It's been like 4 years I think. And I don't regret even a tiny bit. This phone was ahead if it's time. The form factor, the smoothness, That extra bit screen. Everything together is a gr8 combination to use. The experience is is just perfect. Since 4 years there is not a single problem with the swivel mechanism. The phone is just perfect. 🔥

      As someone who's been needing a new phone for a bit since my poor pixel 2xl is really struggling to keep any charge left, How well is the rest of it lasting? Battery still keeping good and does it have a well placed fingerprint censor. Because so far I've been holding out for the Fold 7 do get a nice big screen, but the wing looks like some deliciously ridiculous star trek bullshit and I adore the aesthetic a lot. If I got one I'd want it to be the sort of phone I can keep for a good long time because I hate buying new things since I'm cheap.

      I'm actually really sad LG dropped out of the phone market because, while they were never going to beat out Samsung or Apple in the popularity stakes, when it came to actually having a bit of imagination they were leaps and bounds ahead of those two.

    • @MienLeHoang
      @MienLeHoang 10 months ago +8

      @RinIsArty I remember there is a Wings variant using snap 8 series- try to find it if you want them. Normal variant using 765 (or 730?) may more popular but it's a lot weaker. Though I change to a new phone already, I still have my V50 here and it works fine. Normal use ain't require much to maintain. Just don't push heavy-current task on them (5-6 years old chip already).

    • @jashsachdeva7729
      @jashsachdeva7729 10 months ago +6

      @RinIsArty It has been 4 years but battery is still going strong. I think it's still at 95% efficiency. I keep my charge cycles very precise. 30-85% always. I don't think battery will be a problem but as someone said, it will come to processor. If u r a normal user (non-gamer), then even this chipset will go a long way. Currently no issues as such with the performance. Just I think the camera clarity will be a thing after 2-3 years.

  • @ethanmerryman
    @ethanmerryman 5 months ago +31

    As someone who has repaired both the Galaxy Folds and the LG Wing, I can tell you that the swivel holds up much better than the hinges to repeated use. The main downside of the Folds is that the screen is getting creased each time it's closed, which over time, will lead to a failure. Since the display doesn't bend on the Wing, it will last much longer without issues.

      As someone who owned a galaxy fold I can say 2 things, the fold lost it's cool factor really quickly. And also the inside screen crease failure was so bad (at least for the fold 4) it failed on me like 2 months into use and then got dirt inside it which would have made the repair that more expensive, so I never repaired it and used the front display only, which on the fold 4 was more narrower than a normal phone and thus most apps were not optimized for it

      I bought a Mi K20 Pro in 2019 and it is still being used in 2025. There is no issue with the motorized camera, but the battery and display have been replaced. The conclusion is that the motorized camera is not as fragile as it seems; if the phone slips from your hand, the camera retracts very quickly before hitting the ground.

      See everything he listed being bad about modular phones is wrong. Tech can be recycled, used for spare parts or handed down to kids, friends or family. Google killed the modular phone idea cause it's a bad business model, they can earn more selling full phones rather than parts.

    • @baverfjant
      @baverfjant 10 months ago +9

      @thinkbigize Simple answer. Money. They can get more money from charging for battery replacement, or better yet, you buying an entirely new phone instead. They make up some bullshit excuse that makes absolutely no difference to the consumer, like:
      "Oh we removed the headphone jack to make the phone more slim"
      In reality the phone is about 0,1mm thinner than a phone with a headphone jack. A difference that no one will ever notice while using it. It simply saved them some money while leaving you with one less option than before (BT+3,5mm > BT-3,5mm). And now they can charge you extra for their BT headphones on top of that!

    Love my LG Wing. Beautiful notchless bezel-less display(both of them). Very functional in dual screen mode. Excellent camera setup with OIS. Motorised front camera was also brilliantly placed and designed. Swivel was very sturdy and never gave an impression that it would fail. LG should consider re entering the market, they had some of the most unique phones with personalities.

    the LG Wing was my daily driver for a few years and I loved it. I liked having Google maps open on the main screen, with my music controls on the small one, while driving; it worked amazing flipped open and turned sideways for the best Google maps orientation. Unfortunately it succumbed to the (slightly) notorious "green screen of death" that LG Wings were apparently prone to.

      It wouldn't work as nicely as you're imagining because you still need to put the buttons somewhere. If you have the bottom screen on the top next to the top screen then if you need to use it as a touch screen its pretty far from your thumb.

    I have an idea for a video type. How about you choose a topic or item and then buy the most expensive the most cheap, the smallest, the biggest, the most futuristic and the oldest etc. For example, say you choose lighters (just something I thought of!) and then do that. This means you can also attract audiences who don’t even normally watch tech videos if you make a video about a topic they like! Love your videos by the way, keep it up!👍

  • @digitalranger4259
    @digitalranger4259 10 months ago +96

    8:00 I think you are missing the point with the modular phones. It allows a company to make phones with a unified core that the user can configure to their liking. I personally would eat up that camera handle adapter real quick! Going forward, does it really matter if a phone gets bigger in width? Or thickness? Nope. The battery replaceability alone would be worth it. And the Wing is awesome. You missed how it lets you hold the phone like it's in portrait mode, but shoot the video in Landscape. The video functions are wicked!

    • @DaveMcC-cn1uk
      @DaveMcC-cn1uk 10 months ago +26

      I would also add that his second point about e-waste is a little unfair. E-waste is gonna happen whether it's complete phones or parts. The goal should be to reduce it as much as possible and modular phones is one way of getting there. Why should consumers be told that they need a new phone just because the battery doesn't hold charge? A simple battery swap is the answer, and it's a sin that the phone companies started glueing the batteries in. They're all guilty of it, but Apple are the absolute worst when it comes to allowing repairing of their phones, to the point where replacement parts won't even work because of serial number matching shenanigans.
      No doubt about it, Apple are going straight to Silicon Hell for their practices. Along with all the blackberrys, calculators and Talkie Toasters (tm).

    I actually like the concept of the Wing a LOT better than modern foldables
    1: The ability to hold it like a vertical phone while using horizontal content AND multitasking
    2: The deployment motion is MUCH easier, so easy that it can be done safely one-handed
    3: The rotating design is likely easier to make water and dust resistant than a hinge
    4: The screen not needing to flex makes the design simpler over all
    5: No internal space wasted on semi-redundant displays
    Just adding more screen real-estate has diminishing returns, for example, if you had a phone that, with no downsides, could expand to 40 cm, would it really be much more useful than the display sizes we have currently? (outside of certain edge cases of course) The fact that you can have an entire horizontal display with standard smartphone dimensions AND an additional display along side it seems much more useful than the arbitrarily large screens we see on modern book-style foldables

    think the LG G5's swappable battery concept was ahead of its time-especially since most users, including myself, only made use of the battery modules, not the extra add-ons like the camera. That core idea is brilliant and could be reimagined for devices like the CMF 2. Picture a home station that charges spare batteries while one is in use, allowing for instant swaps-taking you from 0 to 100% in seconds instead of waiting to charge. The only real challenge left is figuring out how to maintain IPX water resistance with this system

    The Nokia reminds me of that weird camera that came out - was it the Lytro or something? - which allowed for post-shot refocussing because it had a series of lenses all shooting at the same time from a slightly different position. It's always been a fascinating concept, and the ability to truly have a "point and shoot" solution where you don't even have to worry about getting the focus right because you can fix it perfectly in post is a genuinely appealing one. If they managed to take that approach with a modern high-end mirrorless system, you could have the perfect wedding photographers' camera, for instance; removing the risk of being slightly off on a shot due to the generally dim light you get at weddings.

      It also reminds me of the Light Camera which stitched together images captured by an array of 16 cameras. iirc Nokia's cameras were designed by Light too D:
