Captain Q is sorely missed. One in a million. Its a lot of work filming and travelling. Thanks Randay for picking up the torch.
Is he dead ?
@@basilrolandRanday said he retired a few videos ago.
@@dbeasleyphx yes that i know but your comment was suggesting the other way.
I miss him
I loved that old man
Thanks Randall, Walter is an icon. Best wishes to you and him. 🤝⛵️
Thanks Para!
Walter is an amazing man... I love hearing his positive attitude and advice.. nobody can ever replace Capt Q however Walter does a great job at filling in when available.. perhaps you could stop by and have a little chat with Capt Q and share it with us?? If not please tell him that I pray he has a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.. also make sure he knows that he's deeply missed.. thanks Ran-dayyy..
Hey 'Randay' as I said before this format is gold - I could listen to this guy and his wisdom all day - miss The Captain - keep that torch burning mate.
Walter is a gem, such wisdom and knowledge. You’re so fortunate to have befriended him. And you’ve given him a soap box to share his thoughts about boats.
agreed... I feel really fortunate to be able to tap into some of his wisdom... and be able to share it with everyone. thanks!
Walter is really an amazing character! Love the details sprinkled with anncedotes. Great interview, Randayyy!
Thanks!
I just found this channel today, and have been binge watching since. I've seen drawings of Mystics, and thought they were very pretty, but seeing her with red sails is just beyond gorgeous. Absolutely stunning.
What FUN!!!!!... Walter is a joy.. and thank you Randall for bringing him to us ;)
Thanks RJ!
The Mystic 30 is one of my favorite boats of all time. Thanks for sharing more Walter!
Hey Randall, really nice to see you back again, so glad that you decided to continue after captain Q👍🇬🇧
Thanks Mark!
Glad to see a new video.
Walter is a national treasure!!! I love hearing that man talk about anything!!! That is one beautiful boat ... I absolutely love the way the head was designed!!!
There could never be another Cap'n. However, I wonder would Walter step into the void left, with his own particular mix of expertise, experience and humour?
I suspect that Walter's book will be a best seller. I'll be buying one and keeping it on-board.
I love how you put up definitions and highlights during conversations. Just one of the many things that makes this my favorite channel.
Thank you Randall for another entertaining and educational video with Walter. Time spent with Walter is always a great time. Take care and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
You either have a skill in finding good ol' sailing characters; or sailing attracts more than its' fair share of good ol' characters. In any event, we're richer for it. Thanks!
I miss Captain Q, but love listening to Walter now, straight up honesty with no fluff or BS
Walter is a knowledgeable Ole salt for sure. I didn't take his advice of staying away from wooden boats. I couldn't resist. $2231 all said and done for a classic 30' Tahiti Ketch.
Walter would support your wood boat addiction. He’s saved 19 of them in his career. Wood boats are his sweet spot… so congrats to you, SM! Bravo
When you compare the outlay, a yacht is such a valuable investment for a young family, I imagine the learning, adventure and closeness it bring to the family unit is invaluable. Love the video, Randy, thanks for taking the time to share Walter, the Captain and yourself.
Well said! I really love Walter’s approach to family adventures and insights… glad you do too! Cheers haydo
love walter…having him spend time with you is a huge win for randai….fine little yacht…
Agreed.. thanks ashley!
if i could pick one sailor to hang out with in the world, and who is alive today, it would be him…so much valuable knowledge and insight…and the shannon 37 is on my hit list…my vagabond 42 was a pig…the prices have gotten crazy on the shannons…but they are still worth every penny…you’ve done a great job of encouraging some very interesting dialogue …keep ‘em rolling!
Walter is a cool guy !!
Walter always makes me want to drop everything and jump on a boat, good stuff, thanks Randay
Hey Randayyy, I really enjoyed this video. Thank you Walter for sharing. I’m looking forward to part two. Maybe a three, four and five would be great!
Randy, this was an excellent video and I think that Walter is rising to the occasion the more interaction you guys have.
His Mystic looked to be a roomy and lovely boat, a pleasure to sail and have fun with and only 10k to buy into and small money to get it as Walter wishes it to be.
More please!
It was good to see a video today and hear Walter’s wisdoms.
Walter is the coolest! So are you Randaay! Great interview.
Love this boat.you never mentioned the purpulsion aystem
I think that boat he has got there is PRETY SWEET (words from a noble man )
Excellent. Thank you for sharing this.Merry Christmas, Happy Channukah, and Blessings.
I have 78 C&C 36 I bought for 10k and lover her. I m excited to see more videos like these. ❤
Awesome show thank you
Randay, Mr Shannon, Capt’n Q, fellow viewers, does anyone know where to meet other sailors who are competent and patient, and willing to teach seamanship? I’m in southeast Georgia, USA… thankfully I took notes on maintenance !In 6 years I want to live onboard a sailboat. After my kids are grown and I have no reason to live in one location for more than a month at a time… I’m glad I learned that the State of Georgia doesn’t allow you to live abroad… before I bought my first sailboat!!!… love listening to Mr Shannon talk!!! So many nuggets of wisdom, and lots of common sense to! Thanks all in advance, wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
That's a beautiful boat he's got there.
I use a Simrad tiller pilot on my Precision 23. It's nearly indispensable for raising and lowering sails when singlehanding. I've used just a tiller tamer before but it's very difficult to keep the boat in irons without the tiller pilot. Especially when your halyards aren't led to the cockpit. So agree with Walter on that.
Also agree on the pleasure of singlehanded sailing a small keelboat. It's the most relaxing thing I've ever done and makes you feel at one with nature.
I do like a French press, though.😅
Pure joy! I am over 60 and starting to sail, I want to be Walter. For the love of sailing
Yesss… get to it!! You can do it!
I wish I found someone like Walter about 30 years ago. My life would have been a lot different (better). I sailed s bit in the 1960's with my Dad on his Columbia Defender (30 ft). Unfortunately I let job and family get in the way. I know now that with a little better lifestyle management I could have had it better.🙂🙂
Walter is why I love East Coast people. Capt Q was rad too
what a gorgeous boat! I'd like to hear more about the performance. looks stunning from the outside.
He is deserving of “Legend” moniker…
Agreed
Really enjoyed this one, Randay, thanks.
Great episode! I absolutely loved it!
I would love to hear Walter explain why he sought out a gaffer.
Also..Peak Up!!!
He said he wanted something a little unconventional and not ‘boring’… I think he loves/appreciates the tradition and history of it the most
Funny, Walter says he doesn’t like to talk but sounds like he’s got a lot to say. Love the new video.
your both my heros
Great boat. Nice guy. Teaches you that it’s not about money.
Irish Tinkers were travelling people who did Tin smithing making and fixing pots and pans out of tin.
I think you've got a Capt. 'S' if he could give impartial assessments of his competitors. If not, please let him know I want that compact Shannon of his if he's no longer into it.
Hear hear for a Xmas chat with Captain Q. I guess Walter is Captain R for restorer. Nice to see him. I can imagine him coming into port on Spray.
What are the best places to look for great boats like this for sale?
A one way conversation.
A one way conversation is NOT a conversation.
That does seem a well laid out boat
No need to ever go head to wind. Jib first then heave to. It will be a different angle then heaving to defensively but as the main slowly goes up, that angle will change. Do this on the sea trial. If it doesn’t work, move on to a good boat
I think Walter need to add a "er" to the end of the name of that boat. I almost bought a boat about that size a few years ago when I was going to work in Jacksonville. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I didn't wind up working in Jacksonville so living on the boat didn't happen. That might have been a good thing because my wife doesn't like the water. Fun video guys and keep the good stuff coming.
I'll take that boat across the world lol
Sometimes I just wonder. (way way overtime on my coffee with you tube time this morning) Anyway. Just this morning. I was thinking about you (Randall) and Captain Q. Maybe a thought that I slept with. Anyway ~ how I was missing and appreciating Captain Q and thinking about how you "jumped in" with a new Used Boat Purchase. Thinking maybe you are overwhelmed and struggling with that boat still. I also have a friend that I lost to (I think now the Columbian coast) from Portsmouth on a whatever boat. And so up pops this post. Of course. So expected. The You Tube A-I ~ I think sometimes can read your mind. Anyway now for your video. I haven't even started seeing what you've posted but I know it's good. 🌸👍🌸~ Thank you for this. ~ ✨🙏✨. (New Hampshire)
I hope Captain Q is still with us & didn't pass on to the next world. Now that the Shannon architect has turned that $10k sailboat into a $60k sailboat, he should pass it on to me, an old disabled A&P mechanic who would love to anchor somewhere in a cove on Santa catalina island.
Say Randay, Can't doubt the wisdom of Walter Schulz, but - isn't that small propane bottle in a non-vented cabinet a little sketchy? If you can live with a small propane bottle, I could see putting it in a small, not much larger container vented with flexible hoses - even a plastic jug with a sealed wide mouth lid - so long as it vented out and overboard. But just placed in a locker, sharing I assume bilge access does not seem right.
Can you ask Walter about that? Thanks
Coleman stove, bottle attached, AKA delivery skipper's best friend. Fits right on top of whatever fire hazard is sitting there not working. MUCH safer.
Don't drink the water!!!!!!!!!!
21:23 never drink boat or marina water. Thanks for that .
Since when is $10,000.00 cheap?!?
for a floating home + transportation I think it would be hard to find a comparable vessel/craft/cabin... it's all relative...$10k is a good pile of cash :)
Walter is my spirit animal
Randall thank you so much for keeping this much needed and enjoyable channel going. You are continuing a treasure. ❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️
Not a boat owner but discovered your channel about two weeks ago. Glad to see you’re keeping it going!
Great. video. How is Captain Q doing
Please let Walter know that you generally meet a better class of people when talking to yourself
😊
I also really miss the captain. Glad to see you carrying on as well
Thank you Randall for doing these videos…and thank you, Walter for taking the time to share your experiences. Letting your hair down and speaking plainly, is so refreshing and helpful. The tips for where and how to find boats is wonderful. I just have one question left: Walter…where DiD you get that hat? Seriously though. Thank you, guys.
I learned to sail on a Sunfish. I loved it. If you want to sail dry, it's the wrong boat for you. But it was the right boat for me. And when the wind came up I just smiled.
"I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. [The designer and builder was still alive]" 😂 love it
Thank Randy, Walter is always interesting.
where is Q?
We need to protect Walter at all cost!
You’re really good at this Randall! Thanks for the content.
If that guy parked my car in Brooklyn he can have it talk about a legend the boat builder Walter Schultz the boat reminds me of either a Morse or a Lyle Hess kind of a mix between a Cornish crabber and a Falmouth pilot cutter but very nice design forget a gaff on that boat running backstays and the sailplan for the main flogs in the backstays cut the boom down backstay on transom recut the sails probably will sail better macaroni rig my freind times have changed sorry but look how it sails
Once he mounts those winches, it will not be an issue. Those dingdang cam cleats, that are a huge hassle to let go, will become a distant memory.
Personally, I would go single whip on the backstays, but if he decides to keep the purchase that's ok too. The winches will work either way.
I guess those are rigged with Marconi mains too (that's the only version on sailboatdata), but I would be afraid of it not balancing as well without the gaff. Not to mention the light air bonus the gaff main offers.
Thank you Graham
@martyspargur5281 you are very right too the only way to figure it out is to try so hopefully it works for the parking attendant legend a couple opinions won't hurt
The port quarter lift needs to be slacked off!!!
Beautiful gaffer, I enjoy Walter's. Insight.
Agreed! We were both slacking on attention. Walter said “who cares!” 😂
@@YachtHunters yes! Who cares! 😆
"I look like I'm a refugee from Woodstock 1969 and I sound like a parking attendant from a Brooklyn parking lot." 😆
Walter Schultz...if you ever get the notion to take a flight to Halifax to do some sailing look me up. We are like minded. I've been solo for years on a C&C 30. Everything you said is correct. I go sailing in the morning when the sea breeze comes in...5 or 6 miles out on the Atlantic then sail, or surf her home, depending;). 20 nm away ...might a well be in Antarctica, the only sign of civilization are jet contrails...no traffic, no sirens, no other boats, no houses,....the hole in the heart..
Yup, that was me too. If I dont have 50000nm I don't have one. On the go almost everyday since 1999. Some days my day sail might be 30 to 40 nm. Other days around 15 nm...some days turn into beauties, some go for shit...but too many lose sailing days because of a cutie in a skirt giving the forecast. It's a perfect day when we get off the dock and every day missed is a day missed.
Schooner Hindu is a very unique and impressive historic vessel. Sailed on her in Key West. Great to find out Hindu inspired WS too!
Missing the Captain and Seadog, but well done and Walter is cool as the 10K boat, Merry Christmas to all...
I vote for Walter as the new Captain Q. Ya know you gotta give the youngsters a chance! He does sound like Vito Corleone so I won't say nothing more.
I love listening to Walter!
There's a Mystic 30 on Seattle CL, but the asking price is 25K.
Sounds like you need a Nunsuch. & away we go! Niagara on the Lake Ontario..
Randay?? Sure, sure Randy, whatever you say................
Walter has a very beautiful daughter He must be a grandfather
Treasure your time with Walter!
Love Walter. 😊
One of my best friends has one of these. Beautifully designed.
Is it a Marconi rig or a gaff rig as well? Super sweet boat and roomy inside. Cheers
His is Marconi. Keeps it in Hingham. @@YachtHunters
Most enjoyable episode.
Makes me want to get down to the boat!
Great..love it..thanks..❤❤
I had the privilege of working with Walter on the first 28 back in 78. Great guy.
Very cool. I’ll let him know you stopped by to watch 👍
Great video Randay. Perhaps consider bringing along some dinty more
Walter says it’s a battle for the one chunk of meat… 😂
Pusser's rum in the thermos, I'm guessing boys!
or Mount Gay :)
Walter is like your channel, Randay.
Ab absolute ripper. Great stuff. Thanks boys😂
Marina water is fine if you're getting it from a building. Getting it from the hose spigot on the dock is going to be different marina to marina. I've personally never gotten sick from drinking from any of my boat tanks and those included some 50+ year old fiberglass tanks. That being said I sanitize my tanks yearly with Chlorine Dioxide that sanitizes both the liquid part of the tank and the head space of the tank.
Its great to see Walter and that's a heck of a nice boat for $10k. That propane stove solution is a bit sketchy though, a 1lb propane canister is very close the thermal equivalent of a stick of dynamite. I'd have looked of an Origo non pressure alcohol stove, but we all have our own risk tolerances. As always a great video Randy!
Randy, its always special time with Mr Schulz. I really enjoy those episodes.
I see alot of myself in him. Well, except he can sail. I'm still skeered of open water. Got a lot of common sense. And he is still married. obv got more brains. And money. But other than that...
Fantastic interview and a focus that so many forget which is to enjoy sailing and keep it as simple as possible. For us older folks we remember life before all the electronics, pressurized water and so on. Not saying I don't have fancy stuff but the more fancy stuff the more problems maintaining it and the more reliant you become. Just watched a video where the electronics kept the motor from starting. My old diesel was recently rebuilt and no electronics. If it turns over and has fuel it will start. Most systems on my boat are exactly that simple.
Enjoyed the NZ video and still portraits. Beautiful scenery indeed.
God I love watching Walter ramble on and on about boats
The man is a trove of knowledge
Thank you i your interaction with Walter. Do you go on his channel?
What happened to Captain Q?
CQ retired earlier this summer - thansk for asking. check out the video here: ruclips.net/video/iNS0vCC8xi4/видео.html
Love this Just a great show- the best so far
Walter's a Gem!
