For science I decided to also buy the M3 Max so I could compare it vs. the M3 Pro then return one of them... if you are curious how they compare (mostly for video editing) check out that video on my other channel here: ruclips.net/video/eaNBAqprWKE/видео.html

Love this 'real world use' style review! Not alot of Windows-to-Mac reviews for the M3 Pro Macbooks.
I spent alot of time overthinking the marginal losses/gains of the M3 line vs M1/M2, but I forget how stable Mac can be with professional programs. I think it's a substiantial upgrade whichever chip I end up getting my hands on.

Thanks for the comment! You know, Apple makes it very difficult to decide which item to get, whether it's a computer or a tablet. Both things I have purchased recently. As someone who likes having nice things, of course I want the higher end models, but it's really worth taking the time to consider your needs at the end of the day, because it's a lot of money. I ended up getting a used iPad 10th gen and returned the Air 5th gen which, WAS better, but not that much better for my needs. I saved $450 Canadian and got the pencil for that deal.
      Anyway!
What computer are you rocking now?

@@TheSAHDLife Don't have it yet, but decided to go with the 14 inch base M3 Pro Macbook Pro, coming from an 8th generation Intel PC. My primary reason for getting a Mac was for Ableton Live. In a worst case scenario, the M3 Pro actually handles less tracks than the M2 or even M1 Pro chips could, due to the deduction of performance cores. Although I really don't see myself bumping into worst case scenarios all the time.

@@jooperino Yeah I see them pushing a LOT of tracks in the testing. I was able to make this thing cry yesterday during my video editing so I might need a little more ram/gpu... so it's a good thing the Max is showing up today! muahaha. One is going to be returned.

You won't regret the move. My oldest working Apple device is an '09 MacBook Pro. Although she doesn't have horsepower to do much, it's still a solid machine. Regarding the keyboard layout, eventually you'll develop muscle memory to use both formats without even thinking about it. I swivel between personal (Apple) and work (PC) all day long haven't noticed in a very long time. (Apple keyboard is more pleasing to the fingertips than this Thinkpad...). I laughed at the sliding around piece - very true. Enjoy!

I bought the M1 mac when it came out...lifelong Windows and Google user (also 40 years old lol) because of the rave reviews of apple silicon. Now I have an iPhone, because they sync together so well for texting from the laptop and sharing notes, air drop files etc. Then came the apple watch...because it was seamless to use with the iPhone. And had to get apple TV so I can mirror easily to the big screen 🤦‍♂️ Of course then I had to get air pods pro for similar connectivity issues...Apple sure knows how to open the pocket book. I highly recommend learning Mac shortcut keys..there are hundreds. Also look into hot corners.. Very handy. Nice video and welcome to the apple orchard! 😂

@@TheSAHDLife I think you'll be blown away by the max. Once you try it you'll have a hard time going back to the pro. (Just based on geeking out on the reviews) The 400 Gb memory bandwidth will make your editing much more snappy. I almost went with an M2 pro from earlier this year over the M3 pro due to the fact that the m3 pro had slower memory bandwidth but decided against it due to several other improvements in the M3 line. I would not have even upgraded from my M1 at all had I not cracked a portion of the screen. Apple really knows how to create a certain amount of "tier envy" when it comes to their chips. I mean 8gb ram in the base m3 just doesn’t make sense, so someone is likely to jump to 16 for a couple hundred extra and then they see the M3 Pro comes with 18 for only a couple hundred extra...so may as well jump to that one...theres a reason apples market cap has nine zeros!

The max is definitely the way to go in my opinion. For example, I have the M2 Max, and it has so much overhead that the M3 wasn’t even a consideration. Just for fun, I exported a 4K CapCut clip, about 30 minutes. I also exported a da Vinci resolve, similar 30 minute clip. Both with noise reduction and multiple layers of 4K from my Sony a7iv, while creating the thumbnails in Photoshop, and with a 4K, RUclips video playing at full screen. I was running three 4K panels in addition to my screen. It didn’t even lag at all as far as the battery life, yes, the max has more cores, but unless you’re doing extreme tasks, the battery life is actually pretty similar. It’s far higher than most people would use in a work session.

This is how I've been feeling also. It's gnarly. I DID just release a video on my other channel TheSAHDStudio where I edit all kinds of codecs and use effects on the M3 Max (in Resolve), and, it's not exactly perfect, but for what it's good at, it's insane at. Fabulous video! I did the same as you - switched over to the M3 two weeks ago, as I have an iPhone and iPad and absolutely love the Airdrop feature. So far, so good. I like a lot of the Mac features, especially keyboard shortcuts which I feel are better than Windows, along the loading of external devices which is smoother and quicker on the Macbook. On the downside, I’m not enthused by the MacBook music app, or the photo app - I’m hoping that with time I’ll come to enjoy them, but for now, for my uses, the Windows system is better in this regard. However. The speakers on the MacBook are terrific, as is the keyboard. I’m glad to have switched, but wouldn’t say the MacBook is better than Windows. They’re just different and it all depends on the user and their requirements. In 2023 both systems are great!

I'm 57 and have owned Macs for 30 years, I recently upgraded from my M1 Mac mini to a 14” MB Pro w/ the M3 Pro chip. The extra items in the dock can be eliminated in the settings, Desktop and Dock> uncheck “show suggested and recent apps in dock”, another thing most longtime Mac users do is place the dock on the left side or right side, not the bottom, there’s more screen real estate horizontally so the dock takes less space on the sides, also size the dock to be sized a little smaller
I use Windows 8 hours a day at work, and after that I'm ready to get home to my Mac.

I started the transition mostly out of curiosity, to try something new, and got hooked on how seamlessly everything works together, so now I have an Apple desktop, laptop, tablet and phone. Full disclosure: I still have a modest Windows gaming PC that I built so that I could continue to play the games in my Steam library, and to use some of my old Windows applications that I still need.

Fortunately my company is all web based so the Surface Pro is in a box in the closet and I just continued to use my iPad Pro 12.9. Getting the 14" MBP M3 Pro to replace the iPad for work. For some reason, I can't get used to the keyboard and the placement of keys which don't make much sense to me. However, the speakers and screen are impressive!
I don't care much about gaming as I'm trying to switch from PC to PlayStation (still trying). Gaming on a laptop was just too annoying due to the temperatures and noise.
I can't believe that I managed to set up the entire laptop and only use 35% of the battery; it's just insane. Two Dropbox accounts synced (1TB each), two Thunderbird email accounts syncing over 100k emails, along with installation of Lightroom, Photoshop, Premiere, Illustrator, PhpStorm, and a few more apps. The fans never kicked in, and it stayed cool.

The crazy thing is, as an apple user from 2007, it no longer "just works" when compared to the Jobs era OSX. Back then it really did just work and would never crash. Perhaps an app got stuck once or twice a year and that was it. Compared to macs from that era, the current macs feel like broken window's machines to me. From about Mountain Lion onwards, OSX has been getting, less reliable and more buggy with each new version. However, the last time I used windows (windows 10 pro) when I bought a new HP spectre, I ended up smashing the machine with my fist and bent the case over my knee after about 6 months or so. So I guess windows is still worse. lol we live in the dark ages of computing. 2000~2015 ish was the best before things got dark.

Yes been fully on the apple ecosystem from 2010 or so, it’s the best option for a music producer really, considering reliability (on stage for example), quality and integration.
Before I used to build pc’s and use androids. I loved the customizability, but hated having to constantly be fixing things.
The only thing I’ve disliked in macs recently is lack of m.2 slot (they’re clearly baiting ssd upgrades this way) and the lack of good GPU’s with raytracing (for content creation). Now the gpu thing is turning around so apple is really nailing it.

Then I prefer the Microsoft office apps over native Apple apps…but this comes down to compatibility with work. Outside of that, I use stock Mail app and other stock Apple apps. Congrats on your purchase man! Though i do think you meant 512GB & not TB... 😅 But that's okay! Haha. 😀
I really like your excitement to be honest. You are exactly like i was when i bought my first Macbook Pro in the summer of 2009. My reason was a bit different though. I was diagnosed with leukemia and i wanted a laptop because i needed to stay for a long period of time in the hospital. I know i didn't want a Windows laptop because in that time-period a lot of Windows laptops mostly failed due to battery failure or HDD. So i went out and ditched out the $$$ as well. It's expensive yes. But you absolutely get what you pay for. Even back then man, the screen, the sound. And yes, i know it's cliché, but the Apple eco-system, the user experience. It's just so nice. When i came home from my chemo treatment i got a 27" Apple Cinema LED display and i never looked back at Windows. I had a lot of different Windows computers. From pre-built to go out and pick my own parts to built my own computer. My last Windows Desktop computer was a Windows 7 Pro desktop that i built and was around $4000.
Anyway, right now i have a 2019 Intel Mac Pro, an 2017 iPhone X (yes, i really need to upgrade!) And an M1 Macbook Air. I'm pretty happy with how everything works together! And let me tell you one thing: That excitement that you feel, it never really disappears! I mean you get kind of used to it. But it's just such a nice working tool. I produce music, so i use logic pro x but i also use final cut pro x. Together with a couple of Adobe apps like Photoshop & illustrator. 🙂 The commands for are actually much easier because i learned to use commands since i'm an Apple user. I also heard that most Mac users mostly use shortcuts than in the Windows pc world. But i don't know if this is actually true.
Well, sorry for the long comment. But that's my experience with Windows vs. Apple! I still miss to built my pc's from time to time though. I might still built one in the future pure for gaming! 😎

Great video. I love how you committed to using only Apple products at first. That way you’ll know whether you prefer Chrome to Safari and not miss the hidden gems you find whenever you buy new tech. I’m not shocked you were surprised at how good the MacBooks are, it would be difficult to find positive Apple reviews if you live in the Windows laptop/PC world, where offending a company can cost reviewers 10k’s of dollars in units or sponsors. The main reason reviewers present such lukewarm and negative focused Apple reviews is there is absolutely no financial upside to positive Apple reviews. Apple does not pay for reviews, they don’t even give out free review units! They LOAN you an early unit, you have to return it. Access is everything in the review world. Apple isn’t perfect but it’s definitely not as bad as reviewers have you believe.

That alone makes it all worth it. With my Windows laptop I literally could only use it with a lap desk, otherwise it would burn my lap lol!
I take a lot of pride in being honest in my content and calling it like it is. If the products deserve praise I will praise them and if not, well that part is even more fun to create! I think it's hard for a lot of people in one tribe to accept or praise something or someone from another tribe.
I've finally realized that Apple IS doing the best work for someone like me and I want to support and be involved with that. Was I wrong for all those years? No, but things change.

I’ve only used Windows computers at work/home and finally bought an M1 Mac in 2020. I salute your approach because learning a new operating system was HARD and I cut corners every chance I got by choosing familiar apps.
Some of the online conflict is due to tribalism but not the majority of it. I’ve noticed most of the anger Apple users express is in DEFENSE of buying Apple products. Even though this is a review on an Apple device, you’ll get a lot of criticism from non Apple users. I just don’t see Apple users flocking to trash a Samsung, or Dell review. When not in a typing mode don't care about home row, usually it means I'm copy-pasting files, links etc. On Mac when I reach out to Cmd+V the index finger roll over thumb causes an unpleasant stretch feeling. This works best when you're in "laptop mode" using only the built-in trackpad since it'd require you to move your hand if you're holding a mouse.

Agreed re the sliding bottom. Someone’s gonna come out with a smock little sticky feet fix for sure.
Oh and I swapped the m3 pro for the base m3 max. The battery drain is a bit more noticeable. But not like crazy bad. I think the trade off is worth it. Really comes down to how many hours you need before you’ll be able to plug for 30 mins or so, as that’s all it really takes to get back to 80%.
Anyway, I keep an eye out for your next vid to see where you landed.

I'll comment only on the device itself, I'm still a relative newcomer and might have not yet found some answers just yet :) Currently I'm a Win desktop user (also used Win laptops), got M1 Pro 16' 32GB not because I needed it, but to just check it out, so I didn't really switch or was forced to, started using the device casually, occasionally but not for work yet (will try in the future). The looks, build quality, screen, speakers - great, opening is not comfortable as that edge is sharp, also can't pick up the laptop from the table easily due to round corners + slippery surface, sometimes the sharp palm rest corners cut in to the bottom of the palm, keyboard feels like it punches me back, no Delete key. But these are minor and some can be solved with an external keyboard etc. Battery life + silence is something very nice, not too critical in my case, yet still, it is very good. Software is where things get more interesting: out of box any Windows power user will be shocked with how bad window management is, how dock is limited, certain choice of shortcuts like you mentioned for copy-pasting (cut-pasting requires extra key), no wonder some users bind the Fn key as Cmd or install CommandX, next odd moment will be the concept of "windows" (MacOS) vs "applications" (Windows) with that "one to rule them all" top bar menu, which, honestly, imo, given we have high res screens should go away making apps self-contained. Animations are too slow even with "Reduce motion"; apps need to be focused first: clicking on some element, like text input in the inactive app will first focus the app itself, so you have to click again and this behavior to my current findings is mostly like that with different apps but not always and sometimes depends on which text input you click within the same app; I'm used to double-clicking on the app's top bar to maximize it (zoom in MacOS terms), most apps I've installed/use do that, say, Chrome, Vivaldi, Firefox behave like on Windows as well, but Safari doesn't and it's not simple to maximize it, but doable. Some apps, like Safari seem to follow the System theme, so I can't have dark OS with white Safari. Not a fan of Launchpad UI/UX, feels like I'm on a tablet, "Finder" is another, imho, dated gem of its own where 'Enter key' renames the file but then Cmd+Down opens it, as a Total Commander user I instantly got Commander One, however, for some network resources have to use Finder. Mouse middle click - need 3rd part app, currently searching for a way for OS to remember the layout last used for the app and auto-switch when apps are switched (it's not that 'Automatically switch to document's input source). Mouse scrolling: built-in touchpad - best, smoothest, Magic track pad (Bluetooth) - quite good, MX Master 3S (Bluetooth, can't recall the experience via the dongle) noticeably worse even with Logitech's smooth scrolling enabled so that even if you need to use the mouse for the best productivity/ergonomics you still want to use the trackpad if need to do a lot of scrolling. External monitor DPI scaling is another pain point.
All in all one has to install several third-party apps (including paid) to make the experience usable while Windows has that functionality out of box. I do think while Windows has had (and will have) questionable design choices it is ahead in the _most basic_ UI/UX as they are putting more effort into that and not afraid to experiment. A lot of MacOS UX niceties would fit so well on top of that - there are a lot of good things when it comes to gestures and certain other aspects and yes, you can get used to most of the things, however it depends if you can accept/work around the most irritating ones, especially if it requires doing extra for something you know could be simpler. No OS is perfect, encountered several bugs in Ventura, some in Sonoma, in general, experience was "stable/reliable", minor hiccups here and there, but nothing major or not solved by a reboot. It does feel that hardware and software are working in a closer tandem compared Windows + vendor zoo, not to mention components from 20+ companies when some third-party driver can easily start causing issues. It's not Windows's fault per se, but ecosystem's, guess, it's different when you don't control all the hardware and I do see why one may go for a Mac, especially when certain software measurably works better on it.
Like said, I'm more in the learning and relaxed "setting the machine up" mode, haven't done anything serious, so take this rant as a Windows user trying to configure MacOS for casual browsing, reading and some terminal for now :) I will definitely continue my journey learning MacOS ways, attempt to work on it etc. to have a well-rounded understanding of the pros and cons.

@@TheSAHDLife I've had this Mac for about a year, it was mainly just on the shelf because: I think that laptops (any) are very bad at ergonomics in general, so if I would have started to use it for prolonged time it will definitely be plugged-in, connected to external displays, keyboard and mouse, technically becoming a Mac Mini. I have a triple 27' quad HD screen setup with 125% DPI (ah, was interesting to discover that the number of external displays supported varies by the a Mac model), while haven't tried at home, I did in the office with dual monitors (also 27' quad HD) and MacOS's scaling options are just not as good, at least for displays with such specs (and mouse was lagging for some reason), I did quick googling and found some table where people were sharing which external monitors to get etc. Next, I RDP a lot, Windows to Windows with a native RDP app is extremely good (including multi-monitor RDP - this is how I basically work on my PC by running local Win VMs per project) except if you need 3D acceleration and smooth animations which also has its solutions/workarounds which I may try in the future, so, several MacOS remote desktop apps I've tried including one from Microsoft - if Windows RDP app passes through the system level shortcuts MacOS doesn't and the experience gets constantly interrupted by the host OS getting in the way, yes, one can keep on disabling/enabling host shortcuts, probably figure out some solution via Karabiner for certain apps, but I wasn't so pressed to fight this until the end, so dropped, decided that when current project is compatible will try working on the Mac locally (no RDP, no virtualization), however, I'm not ruling out that I might start RDP'ing into MacOS to do something (tried both ways with Parsec recently). I understand that many things I've mentioned in this and previous comment are something one can adjust too, but there was nothing I saw (yet) that would instantly make me feel like I want to jump ship, I can't rule out that a more casual user will like MacOS more as it does feel to be packaged better overall despite some questionable UI/UX choices, meanwhile I'm thinking to get fluent with MacOS and get a Linux laptop to learn the desktop/laptop experience there :) As for the phone: no, not planning, I don't have a need for that, prefer Android's bottom navigation buttons, I don't get many calls and SMSs, mainly use Telegram on all devices, occasional own file sharing can be done via Telegram as well even if I have Dropbox or via NAS. Several times a year I appreciate that I can connect the phone directly via USB for file operations :) My wife, on the other hand, has iPhone (6 and 12), iPad, iWatch. She got 12 for the camera, yet for some photos misses her Google Nexus 5's camera, I was for this decision due to longer software support by Apple and usually a better resale value. Recently asked about the watch experience (~1y) and didn't seem to find any tempting reasons to get myself into any smartwatches just yet: I'm after decent monitoring and a much longer battery life, no need for music playback, answering the calls, typing on a micro display etc. It's obvious that my use cases and needs differ a lot from what an average consumer may want, maybe that's why I never got into "this is magical" when it comes to any technology from any vendor, however, I will repeat myself if you can comfortably do what you need and it's better/faster/stronger on X - use X for that, use Y where it fits better, but whatever you do, think about docking the laptop to external accessories as your eyes, neck, shoulders, back, palms etc. will thank you later :)

Så try to place your hand so far to the left, that you will have to place your thumb on Command and use your index finger for copy/paste keys "C" and "V". Most of your option key functions, such as @ are place to your right and so why not try to place the thumb of your "right hand " on the "option" key as your little finger press "@".
