Saw Rush 18 times! Wanted to recommend The Spirit of Radio from the Maple Leaf Gardens concert,1984 .
Great version to do!! The story behind this song is pretty cool! While recoding Snakes and Arrows album, Alex was out of town for a few days and they were just doing some overdubs at the studio. Geddy had just got a Jaco Pastorius fret less bass. Their producer Nick, was secretly recording Geddy messin around with this bass and was playing that little riff. They messed around with it a bit and Neil joined in on a small practice kit and they wrote this! When Alex got back, he had to lock himself in a room for a day or two to come up with his part of it! Banger of a song and it made it on the album!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!! Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Awesome, thanks for letting us know the background! Cheers from Texas here too.
@@JonnyJungle77Many of the songs on the S&A album have interesting backstories. They talk about it in the Game Of Snakes & Arrows documentary. This is the only video I could find: ruclips.net/video/qCwY2cgHK50/видео.html
It is not a band. He is playing those sounds through the electronic drum set. Neal generated the band sounds on a synthesizer and mapped the sounds to be triggered by the drum kit.
We lost one of the most important musicians and lyricists ever in Neal Peart in early 2020.
The horn sounds began as samples with each note played when he hit a particular cymbal. Only later did the recording of the classic jazz band begin. Neil was one of the pioneers of music sampling, working for years until the technology caught up with his vision.
There is only one thing wrong with this song...it's too short! LOL Just love it!!
I would like to suggest Caravan from the Time Machine Tour live in Cleveland
One Little Victory live in Rio
Earth Shine from the R30 tour live in Frankfurt
Cheers
I gotta say, I like the S&A Drum solo better than the R30 solo!! That was incredible!
Hard to believe they put this song together from a few goofin around bass licks in the studio between taping.😂
Couldn't agree with you more brother; Alex is so underrated, definitely one of my top five also
How about “Turn the Page”
Underrated song by them in my opinion
since you and your wife like steve vai try this one omg you will like this its nice
leave that thing alone?
Keep in mind Neil is in his late 50's and this 8 1/2 minute solo is late in a 3 hour show. He is not only one of the best drummers in the world but an absolute athlete to pull this off at that age. He is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer
And Neil has said that every solo he did (from what I know) on the Snakes & Arrows tour was improvised. Which makes it even more incredible!
The bass Geddy is using is a reproduction of Jaco's Bass of Doom.
And look at Neil with a reproduction of a drum set my broke ass will never own.
The shirt Geddy Lee is wearing with Blah Blah Blah on it is a reference to Alex Lifeson's acceptance speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013
Other way around perhaps-this was six years earlier✌️
alex is incredible guitar player. i saw rush last tours and geddy bass sound was very upfront. he even did bass solos.
When he reached the jazz section, all the stress left his face. He was enjoying this performance. That was a joy to see.
Whoa finally…. Been requesting this for months . Most Rush fans don’t know what is good…..great job being the first to react to this example…..
Ah yes, musical crack as I labeled it when I first heard it on the album.... just when you're really getting into it, its over, and it leaves you wanting more.
Love the making of snakes and arrows when they talk about how this sling came together. Seeing Neil on a stripped down kit and geddy with a fretless bass….just awesome.
I keep saying this...."All The World's A Stage!" If you want to hear Neil's first live drum solo, check out "Working Man/Finding MyWay" from that show! You'll never listen to the studio versions of those songs again!

Ladies and gentlemen the Professor on the drum kit..
T, consider Something For Nothing from 2112. Just a thought.
Neil Peart should have been called Thor, he is the true GOD OF THUNDER!!!!
La Villa Strangiatto from R30 tour (Frankfurt) is awesome and very funny (see Alex "singing").
Rush's official video for Malignant Narcissism is great....a path through all the religions of the world...intrigued? check it out , I learnt a lot from it.....nice one bud
RUSH beneath between behind...please, but with lyrics
T The best shows I have EVER seen live have all been RUSH!!! they are all Masters of their craft
One of my all time favorites from rush. Geddy lee is the goat
Rush were always about the music.
You don't even see the back half of his drum kit.
EVERY NEIL PEART DRUM SOLO is BADASS... but THIS is my ALL TIME FAVORITE! Not only for it's MIND-BOGGLINGNESS, but because NEIL really seems to be ENJOYING himself, something he RARELY displayed to the OUTSIDE WORLD!
Been a Rush fanatic since 1980, I lost touch with them for a awhile. Missed Snakes and Arrows . Listening to this now for the first time . Wow!!! , still my favorite band ever
I love that we can identify the various tours of one of the most skilled bands in history by whether there are things like washers, or rotisserie chickens that are balancing out Alex's 'Marshall Stack.' Oh, and those samples were fired off of triggers that you can see mounted within his kit.
The best. Ever.
One of my favs, so underrated. Thanks for doing the live version 🤘
Check out the Rush song Double Agent. It is probably the only time you hear spoken word / rap from Rush.
RUSH DREAMLINE AND DRIVEN FROM DIFFERENT STAGES. CRANK IT UP!!!!
What a drum solo!! R.I.P NEIL PEART!!
Geddy actually comes in one beat early with the opening bass line...Neil compensates for it, and to most, it goes unnoticed. It's something I caught the first time I watched the DVD...and thought...I just saw a Unicorn....a miniscule mistake at a live Rush show! lol
"Straight up machine", is right. There are drum machines that wish they could play like Neil.
Headlong Flight brother, you will be blown away.
He’s right!! Headlong Flight is a must! Merry Christmas, Jim! Blessings to you and yours, my friend!!
@@juliebrockett3471 Merry Christmas Julie!!!!
Have you heard "Leave that Thing Alone"? another one Geddy just goes off on.
Yep chickens on the rotisserie. It just amazes that you people are waking up to listen to the best band ever!. There catalog is Awesome. Check it out!
Do you suppose when they first got together they said, "Let's see if we can make three people sound like six," or did it just happen over time?
I don’t know if you noticed on some of the camera angles stewie from family guy is watching him play just some of his humor
Vital Signs, Digital Man, Natural Science, The Way the Wind Blows, Snakes and Arrows are a few Rush songs you might like.
That's a great tune. You should really see the official video for it. Malignant Narcissism is about all religions. The video demonstrates the origins family tree of all the different religious sects in history.
it was always about the music with them no compromise. Worth its weight in gold
Nice spending sometime with you and the boys.
He's making those sounds with triggers.
I got to see Rush twice on this 'Snakes & arrows' tour in 2007/'08 😁🤘It was a treat to see Neil Peart do the drum solo after 'Malignant narcissism' twice in my lifetime... I recall on their 2012 tour, Peart split his drum solo into 3 separate sections😮 (U can witness it if u get the Rush DVD 'Clockwork Angels Tour') and I recall thinking to myself, "Neil, u are spoiling us!"
The great thing about these current live albums (compared to older live records like 'Exit stage left' ) is they were recorded digitally and u can hear everything perfect... all the nuances of the performances.
This album is one of there best ! Snakes and arrows
Where's My Thing, The Main Monkey Business, Leave That Thing Alone, The Main Monkey Business are othe Rush instrumentals you'd enjoy.
a reporter asked Eddie VanHalen what us it like to be remembered as the best guitarist of all time , he said I dont know ask Alex Lifeson !
Yeah I heard that expressed too.
Alex LIFESON is an intellectual and skillful guitarist especially when it comes to his personal solos as they relate to any given composition... his solos always enhance the overall theme of the song where Eddie Van Halen just wanted to show off his skills as a star guitarist... his solos in my opinion are empty.
Effortlessly might be the wrong word. He practices harder than 99% of the drummers out there sound to make it SOUND effortless. He notoriously practices to practice. And before that he cross country skied in the off-season to get in shape to practice/play that hard every night!
Nice reaction bro
Thanx!
Amazing music they make for just 3 guys and Neil is the GOAT on the drums
Neal - beyond genius...
The only wrong with “Mail Nar” is it’s not nearly long enough!!
I could watch these boys play forever!!
KEEP RUSHIN. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Geddy on a fretless? Need I say more?
T I believe what he used was called a mini moog. Basically a synthesizer that produces pre programed sound by what drum head is hit.
A mini-moog is a synthesizer, but isn’t triggered by electronic drums. The xylophone looking thing is called a “MalletKAT” along with Roland electronic drums and foot triggers.
"Look at everything he has in his kit!"
That's not even his full kit. Check out the one he's playing in the Rio concert. Or the Frankfurt solo.
Neil Peart is a BEAST!
Wow! I've never heard this one by Rush, absolute incredible. Freakin love this band 🤘🤘🤘
Neil has sensors on various parts of his kit so when he hits them the additional sounds get triggered.
Did I see Neil moving and enjoying with a happy face doing the Jazz part 🧐😀😀😀, nice. Yeah this track….performed in my hometown Rotterdam in 2008,
It just amazes me that you people finally listen to the best band that I've ever seen. RIP Pratt.
The Professor was always careful with his compositions to assure audience enjoyment...it wasn't just about him...a great individual.
a true G.O.A.T.
Oh hell yeah.
The orchestra hits are triggered by Neil. he's got pads.
Dude, I listen to to so many bands. Now check out Umphreys Mcgee.
I highly recommend you listen to Eric Carr’s drum solo from KISS Animalize live video. It is frickin awesome! ruclips.net/video/ZP_pmV-emmw/видео.html
Neil was having a blast rockin at the end with his head dancing around. Damn kids and their music 😂
T! - man, you have got to take the time to watch this whole concert:
ruclips.net/video/PbtJi1-v8h8/видео.html
Three Davids, Bowie, Crosby and Gilmour, plus Graham Nash, Richard Wright, Dick Perry and Phil Manzanera - and others.
Probably the best versions of Echos, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond and I like: Smile and Take A Breath for personal reasons too.
2.5+hrs - well worth your time clear until the very end.
It doesn't get much better than this does it? The complexity and magic of Rush is hard to beat.
There will never be a tighter band
Bass line is insane
like the bass?
look at this
rush leave that thing alone live
YOU DIDN'T ASK ME CUZ I'D TELL YA !!!
try where's my thing here it is live in dallas.
all the horns are drum pad triggered
Clockwork Angels …
React to Jinjer-PISCES Live Session. Tatiana will Awaken your Soul
We did.
Still waiting for your reaction to Tom macdonald-Naked.
Love listening to Rush…. This song is too good for Trump, Peart was an intellectual philosopher who foresaw the future
Neils Nic name was. The. Professor
Testament. THE BALL
AD
hes hitting triggers that create the horn sounds
