I totally disagree! Mick coulda rigged everything up in no time at all and for far less $. You would just have to remember that the AC pumps out heat, the tach will give you the alternator charging voltage, and a few other minor quirks. In all seriousness I’m surprised your battery survived the 17V charge time. They can take short bursts of that kind of voltage but not long ones. There’s a guy named ‘Handy Bob’ that has all sorts of info on solar and batteries. My solar will charge my 2 Trojan 6V golf cart type batteries at ~14.7V when it’s warm up to 15.2V when it’s cold. Nice having a controller that keeps track of that. Many controllers wouldn’t permit charge voltages of anything >14V which meant that batteries were chronically undercharged. Dead within a year.
You're seriously one of the best people on RUclips... I have a project I'm working on currently due to inspiration from watching you. I appreciate all your videos and you as a person. Stay true to yourself and adventure on!! Looking forward to seeing you soon 👊👊
I can’t lie. I’ve been waiting on this video. I’m from a Cummins family. We have P pumps to common rails and everything in between. This is a awesome platform for what you’re doing.
I realize I'm biased here, but considering I have the same engine in my dodge ram, I luv that u explained all that. I didn't even know that what u did could b done to that engine. Very interesting, and awesome info to know. I really like the fact that u bring this kind of variety to ur show. Just makes me wanna keep watching. Super job, Dustin. 👍👍👍
It's insane how smoky it's gotten, I was in Smithers last week and drove right past the fire just outside Burns Lake on the way back. Scary stuff. Stay safe and keep up the amazing videos!
As a long time truck driver with all types of diesel engines. if you learn to listen to your engine you will automatically know when to shift with out even thinking about it. so if you never wire up the tachometer again you will be pretty confident on all your shift points. loving your videos and the amazing places you go. Be safe in all your travels..
The second time in 2 days that I've heard a younger person refer to a manual as a standard transmission. That's what I call them, but I'm old enough to remember when automatics were optional, thus the term and how I learned it.
Cool walk-through! I'm a chevy guy, so watching someone work on a dodge makes me happy. lol... My buddy is working on his 08 charger today - his ECM took a shit. He refuses to let the thing die and move on.
My brother had the greatest car ever made and sold it to fools who cut it up!!! It was a 69 RT/SE Dodge Charger with a 440 magnom!!!! Best car I've ever been in and drove. He got it when I was 15 and I'm 63 now! Some of them are going for over a hundred thousand bucks now!!!
Very smart Dustin, considering the extreme temperatures and remote areas you may be visiting the less solid state stuff you have the better off you are. Always best to be able to duct tape and bailing wire your way out 😉 !
Once you get used to it. You will now when to shift by speed and engine noise. I've been driving semi 30+ yrs and I can't remember last time I looked at the tach. If I'm skipping several gears I'll just look at my speed and I know what gear I should be in. People will say but you can only do that with a semi, WRONG. I've had many manual transmissions both gas and diesel and only shift by sound and speed. I also only use the clutch when taking off from a stop or backing. So you will be fine without a tach.
Having a 1995 auto 12v, the only mod I will do is the fuel shut off. I’ve had one fail and had the darndest experience with an intermittently failing relay for this solenoid. I buy quality batteries every 5 years, use overdrive every outing, monitor the tach for compression breaking and optimal fuel efficiency when towing, use cruise for frequent jaunts across the Mojave and enjoy the AC. For me, I don’t see the value of the delete because this engine is simply the best as it is.The only other electrical components to fail in 30 years were two starters and the headlamp switch. That switch was more difficult for me to swap than the starters. The video was interesting and certainly learned something though…Thanks for the knowledge transfer…👍
You can get the tach to work. The crank sensor is a tone wheel with a pickup sensor, it sends pulses over time. You can create a timer with a 555 timer circuit and have an output pulse for the tach. These circuits are easy to make but will take a little time and research.
You read/wrote my mind! I was just about to suggest something like this, although you’ll have to add a small PNP transistor most likely to amplify the signal from that pick up, depending on its impedance. Technically, you could just get a really dumb decameter that only needs a pulse of electricity and has its own built-in controller and then use a magnet on the crank pulley with a pick up sensor so it can use Eddie currents to send the RPM to the gauge
Found your channel only recently so I'm currently going through your back catalogue of videos... Outbloodystanding! Every episode better than the last. Thank you so much for what you do.
Although a great rebuild could you show the fires that are impacting British Columbia? And actually, show how people are receiving help and assistance, with their permission obviously, show how they find a fire map, and or cooling centers, show why " Ring" or other products impact their insurance products, and perhaps do a video on how fireproofing helps get through the significant impacts these have on real people? You are nearer than I am Dustin. Grateful for the drives lately, British Columbia is a beautiful place. Also, how are privacy laws impacting how media can or cannot report on the impact of those fires, Thanks so much, Dustin.
Not entirely true, the batteries will go in an EMP situation you will have to find a way to start it, push start (manual transmission only) is possible, could park on a hill and hope it starts before reaching the bottom. And in the winter it will be even harder to start without batteries. I've driven Computer Free diesels for years (not modified just older) once it's running it needs no power. It's impractical to leave it running waiting for TSTHTF.
With the battery hooked up in the rig the way this one is, an EMP would not cause the battery to go bad. Chances are the starter would be good as well.
I love Weds edition.. I love that truck.. I want one just like it.. I just got the AC fixed in my Subaru (o rings & $300 in recharge kits later) man it is so nice having the air coming out of the vents at +4ºC (40F). I have a cup holder zip-tied to my driver-side vent, and in 30 mins I can take a can of water and have it chilled to drinkable temp. For my build: I still need struts all for corners are being replaced with Forester struts (2" ground clearance), biggers wheels/tires from 195 60R15 to 205/55R16, I'll get the brakes done at the same time as the struts (and probably the same with ball joints, tie rods etc.)
Mic?! Where are you? Probly taking the day off. Dustin, thank you for the Wednesday videos and the rest. I really appreciate all you do for your viewers. If you ever come to Southern Oregon and would like a co-pilot let me know✌
Your mechanical knowledge always impresses me matey. Some light techno-gadget removal surgery here and you've got the robust solution for the field (Hill, stream, mountain!) - Nice One
Cruise Control is okay. I don't use it myself, for I'd rather coast naturally with gravity. Neat engineering and mechanics here. Again, I wish I had a fraction of your talent. This brain of mine, alas, isn't the best with puzzles.
The computer is mainly is for the dash cluster gages. The computer does nothing other than control the overdrive in the transmission. I had a 1991 12 valve cummins and now I have a 1994 and a 2003 cummins lol
Pretty sure you are INCORRECT re, automatic trans. 47 / 48R "E" means electronic shift as opposed to AKA 46RH meaning, "Hydraulic" shift. (The older "H" series shift just like the 60's--70's transmissions, no electronic controller. The converter lock/ OD are simply controlled with as simple as toggle switches, but an RE MUST have an external controller to shift. As far as I know, there are certain aftermarket all manual valve bodies available, and I thing one of the TransGo kits will accomplish that, but this will leave you with a MANUALLY shifted trans from gear to gear I do know there are differences in the VB between 42/44/46RE series and the 47/48 V10/ diesel transmissions so it bears looking into
Hi Good saw you in Williams lake today July 13 you’re at the lights by Canadian tire I hope my horn but I guess you didn’t hear me that noisy 12 valve and then up the hell you went your rig is looking sharp buddy
highly suggest you get a posi lock cable to replace the vacuum assisted 4x4 actuator, you dont want to run into not being able to lock up 4x4 when in the middle of no where, you could take it apart and move the E clips around to put it in the lock position at all times, but thats just a waste of time and a pain in the ass.
Dustin, many years ago I owned an Austin Mini Cooper S, high performance car, no tachometer. The way the factory indicated gear shift points was to put vertical marks representing the gears (I, II, III) on the speedo at the recommended shift speeds, just a thought.
if it starts shaking... shift... if it stops pulling... shift. you probably wont ever bother putting in a tach because you will have learned how to drive it by then. nice rig!
Don't let your beard get any longer, to me you're looking very close to the backwoods, Ozarks hillbillies. You're still a good looking young man. I do enjoy your channel you have a good sense of humor.☺️😉
Great video. The only time you should ever need a tach on that "12 valve" is to prevent overspeeding the engine down grade or it's needed for a completely deaf driver ... if you find yourself a functioning exhaust brake (new ones are all the $$) then you will be coming downgrade no brakes...

Check out a diesel Tiny Tach. It has a transducer that bolts onto one of the steel injection lines and counts pulses from there. They are under $200 and you won't have to mess with your alternator.
The Air Conditioner, you add a switch to turn the compressor on. Why couldn’t you pigtail off of the blower motor power wire? I am trying to keep mine as factory looking as possible. And as least amount of steps as possible to turn the air conditioner on. Just asking, thank you sir for your insight.
You can use the stock crank sensor to run an aftermarket tach. Super easy to do you just need to wire a 1k ohm resister from the signal wire to the power wire. If you need a wiring diagram just let me know. This is how i run my tach on my ford cummins conversion.
The external regulator will work, if you get a quality adjustable one from Summit or Kegs. Not that it will need adjusting, it's just that the off the shelf napa and car quest oreallies are Chinese junk and overcharge, especially since vivid.
In my opinion you don't really need the tach.. my old 91 never had one from factory. It's hard to over-rev as well as hard to lug them. You'll pick a sound that indicates to you where to shift eventually. I assume you will run the lower end of the range, which is just kinda where these things like to run at. You can't go wrong. If it lugs that's too low. Lol. If I ignored the tach I shifted a 15 litre diesel at around 1700 rpm. Which usually worked out rather well!
In theory but a junk yard ECM would fail as well. So might a “new” replacement made in Upper Slobbobia. My brief understanding is the old Dodge trucks have a problem with ECM failure so eliminating it makes the most sense.
Love your channel and content. I'm a Land Cruiser guy but with no Toyota diesels in the US I'm considering a diesel truck to mix up my camping from remote Sierra Nevada Trails to add a travel trailer for long range comfortable cross country trips. My 2007 Tundra doesn't like our Jayco 21mml trailer much, although she does chug a long without to much complaints. I hear the 90's dodge is the most epic in reliability, do you know the year range of the Dodge with this reputation, yours is in this year range correct?
Hey brotha loven the videos. But for the tachometer just listen to the motor you will be able to here when it's time to shift and over time it will be muscle memory
I wonder where you would find any books that would explain how to do away with Electronicks that you wouldn't need to run just the motor? Interesting? I remember when they ran without the crap!
cool. the old school rules attitude. But doesnt something go wrong with those heat plates where the bolts loosen off or corrode and then bolt heads go funneling through the engine and pretty much destroy everything. Or am I wrong about that
@@Destination_Adventure I am super interested in how others lived. i was the Sole Engineer , i reported directly to the captain, was in charge of everything that could break or stop working or need polishing or painting. I had a fully stocked and well equipped workshop in the rudder room, a girlfriend in housekeeping and a buddy in the galley, the chef taught my buddy and i how to make beer and on most friday nights the captain partied with us
next time i see you u gotta have bigger stickers the one u gave me looks so small next to mine and the 4 wheel drive association and bc offroad adventures
So your truck is a 12 valve? I'm wondering if this can be done to a gen 2 , 24 valve, although mine is automatic with a stage 3 billet trans from ATS in Colorado.
Dustin, I really think you should leave these types of videos to Mick. He very likely could have explained it all in half the time using only 1/10th the information. 😄
So I don't know vehicles at all, but what I gleaned is that the computer regulated a lot of stuff, and you've removed that regulation, bypassing by coming up with alternates for each thing? So they are still regulated but not by a computer? Also, wow, no air conditioning all this time??
I tried making this comment before but it didn’t take. You can purchase a non AC Serpentine belt as a backup replacement in case your AC compressor seises up. Also GEARWRENCH makes a Serpentine belt replacement tool kit, makes it easier to replace the belt and also comes with assorted sockets. I got mine off of Amazon.
No matter what DO NOT let Mick touch any of this ! Also make sure you have some kind of manual fuel shut off . Love that rig .
I totally disagree! Mick coulda rigged everything up in no time at all and for far less $. So if we get nuked, the EMP won't leave this truck useless. It will be the only runner in town.

ok stoopid
carrington event melted wires by sending to many amps through.
be smart or be censored with death
With the battery hooked up in the rig the way this one is, an EMP would not cause the battery to go bad. Chances are the starter would be good as well.
In theory. If the starter, battery, and wiring harness doesn't fry
This emp thing is the exact reason I did the same thing to my idi ford 😂

Best way to build them when you're out in the middle nowhere, bomb proof!
Great project! Now I have ECM delete envy.
My God man. I have watched many a youtube vids but you are something a cut above!!! Its aboot time we meet one day!
Thank you, I really appreciate that.
This is how the trucks should have come🤣🤘
What a great upgrade. Smart move!!

Hi Good saw you in Williams lake today July 13 you’re at the lights by Canadian tire I hope my horn but I guess you didn’t hear me that noisy 12 valve and then up the hell you went your rig is looking sharp buddy
Surely there must be a winkle lever, linked to a false button, that says “giddyup go”. 😉 Happy trails ! 🇨🇦🌲🤙
highly suggest you get a posi lock cable to replace the vacuum assisted 4x4 actuator, you dont want to run into not being able to lock up 4x4 when in the middle of no where, you could take it apart and move the E clips around to put it in the lock position at all times, but thats just a waste of time and a pain in the ass.
Great video man! We’ve done this before on 12 valves on cranes
Dustin, thank you for posting this. Very interesting and educational!
Very very interesting, I decided to watch your video a day later, eastern time zone. 😊
Dustin, many years ago I owned an Austin Mini Cooper S, high performance car, no tachometer. The way the factory indicated gear shift points was to put vertical marks representing the gears (I, II, III) on the speedo at the recommended shift speeds, just a thought.

Have you thot of throwing these out as shorts. Great stuff again Dustin
if it starts shaking... shift... if it stops pulling... shift. you probably wont ever bother putting in a tach because you will have learned how to drive it by then. nice rig!
I don’t need the tach for shifting, it is for long steep downhills. Gotta save them brakes.
it's a Cummins not a Detroit
Always helpful information you provide!
Im so glad I do not have to bypass anything anymore 😂😂😂!!! I do not miss those days.
Suggest you get a exhaust temp gauge and a Fast Fuel pump with water separator

I'm curious as to why you need a tach? Shifting by ear works just fine. Love the adventures. Keep it up.
Really helps on the long downhills to know when you have to get on the brakes. Exhaust brake only does so much.
@Destination_Adventure I don't run a exhaust brake so that's something I don't think about. Good to know.
You can use the stock crank sensor to run an aftermarket tach. Super easy to do you just need to wire a 1k ohm resister from the signal wire to the power wire. If you need a wiring diagram just let me know. This is how i run my tach on my ford cummins conversion.

Yeah but then you can’t listen to ‘Thunderstruck’, ‘She Sells Sanctuary’, or ‘Crazy Train’ at appropriate volume. 📻
@mikedavison3400 not totally true! Maybe at first but after it becomes mindless and muscles memory crank that sh*t up!
Brilliant!!
Just started to look into that kind of project, would of be great to know what truck is that and witch year
Greetings from the other side
Best thing with workshop Thursday is can do other things while listening in 😂😂
🤔 will next boat tray have a hot tub??
🤙🖖
Work shop wedday near as good as sat post thanks
Thanks ✌️
I wonder where you would find any books that would explain how to do away with Electronicks that you wouldn't need to run just the motor? Interesting? I remember when they ran without the crap!
This is ideal
Can i get more info on the AC toggle switch my PCM is dead and want to have AC until the summer when we common rail swap my 98 2500
Listen to the engine smart
I deleted mine and put a full Manuel trans valve body since it’s automatic but my question is will I have a powercitic draw?
My bus is. 24v Cummins. So close, yet so far 😂
Why can't ou use the harmonic balancer for a tachometer?
Seat of your pants will tell you when to shift. You don't need no stinkin' tachometer. Great episode. Happy you thought to cover all that.
You do need a stinkin’ tach if you wanna crank some tunes!
Regardless of cranked tunes...you can feel the vibration
cool. the old school rules attitude. But doesnt something go wrong with those heat plates where the bolts loosen off or corrode and then bolt heads go funneling through the engine and pretty much destroy everything. Or am I wrong about that
Do you have videos of your RV rebuild? I want to watch them as I am doing the same build. I also am considering putting a 12 valve in the motor home.
search his channel, Dustin has videos covering everything he did on the rebuild from last Winter
would it not be easier to just have a spare pcm on hand in case of issues? Perhaps im missing something
Love the channel, what do you think of this ending :( TAKE ONLY PIC'S & LEAVE ONLY PRINTS)
Nice job!
do you have a video that talks about your job in the marine industry? I worked on a 230′ motor yacht named Scat
Not in detail. Maybe I can cover this in the future.
@@Destination_Adventure I am super interested in how others lived. i was the Sole Engineer , i reported directly to the captain, was in charge of everything that could break or stop working or need polishing or painting. I had a fully stocked and well equipped workshop in the rudder room, a girlfriend in housekeeping and a buddy in the galley, the chef taught my buddy and i how to make beer and on most friday nights the captain partied with us
Nice…👍🏻
next time i see you u gotta have bigger stickers the one u gave me looks so small next to mine and the 4 wheel drive association and bc offroad adventures
Check with Merlin at Old School Garage in Lake Havasu, he does a lot with the 12 valve Cummins and has a RUclips channel.
Or possibly DeBoss Garage with his RUclips channel.
So your truck is a 12 valve? I'm wondering if this can be done to a gen 2 , 24 valve, although mine is automatic with a stage 3 billet trans from ATS in Colorado.
No 24V has an electrically controlled injection pump that is controlled by a computer.
thank you for this !
Good info...thx✌
Just wondering Dustin, I thought the 5.9 did take the RPM off the alternator. Great info as always. Thanks. 👍👍👍👍👍
Not this one, but possibly others. Everything I know about these trucks comes from this particular one. Lol
Dustin, I really think you should leave these types of videos to Mick. He very likely could have explained it all in half the time using only 1/10th the information. 😄
I love Mick too but I would not go more than 50 KM from a mechanic in any rig he worked on.
Go to a big truck wrecking yard you can get the parts for a tach fairly cheap
My bus is probably older you and is all mechanical and also two stroke
