So an American tank crew, a wounded SS officer, a Wehrmacht Major, and a French Prime Minister walk into a bar. They use said BAR to defend castle Itter.
This story is a series of heroic acts by unlikely people, that ended up saving a group of French PoW: - An SS officer, wounded 5 days prior and now a deserter, accepted a request to become the sole guard of castle Itter to ensure PoW inside it wouldn't be hurt. - Anticipating SS assault on the castle, Yugoslavian electrician decided to leave the castle's safe walls to go find help. - Gangl, instead of surrendering or running away, decided to instead organise a group of Austrian freedom fighters to prevent SS from terrorising villages in the region. If not for them, the Yugoslavian electrician would've driven right into an SS unit garrisoned in village Wörgl, and help wouldn't have arrived to the castle in time. - Lee decided to trust Gangl when he arrived at his unit and told the story, organising a group of volunteers to save the castle. - A French tennis athlete, who decided to run straight past besieging SS soldiers in order to guide relief force of Americans who were trying to reach the castle. A single one of them doing any less heroic thing could've led to castle Itter falling, but all of them chose to do what's right despite other options being much easier. Especially Gangl- had he not organised that Austrian troop, SS soldiers would've intercepted French prisoners' call for help.
As far as I remember, the French POWs and other detainees were, for the most part, general officers or high-ranking civil servants like prefects or senators. Nearly all, if not all, 1st WW veterans. There were also accompanied, if memory serves right, by their wives. Imagine that. These old men fighting in such an unlikely combat group.

Josef Gangl died a hero. Redemption is possible for many who did wrong. If Gangl had done bad things during WW2, he made up for it by saving the former prime minister of France from an SS sniper by taking the bullet himself. It’s unfortunate though that deciding to defend Castle Itter cost Gangl his life. RIP Gangl. You will not be forgotten.
Just shows the fibre of his character as an honorable man. Also switching to the resistance at the end of the war proves he was disillusioned with the N*zi rule.
@waIdemar44 it only showcased that the Allies didn't understand the deep complexities of the broad opinion of all German & Austrian peoples during WW2. Otto Von Habsburg, since the beginning, had been trying for years to compel FDR & Allied leaders to help the Austrian resistance that was slowly turning many Germans to aid their cause to end Hitler's regime. Since the late 19th century, many people still couldn't comprehend the German Question.
I just realized: During the last refrain, Gangl gets up and runs towards Premier Reynaud exactly at "Enemies leaving the past". That moment is so beautiful and makes me sad and happy at the same time! This video was great, but that single moment.... one of the greatest moments, I'll ever get to witness!😥
also great when you realize Gangl was a veteran and participated in the invasion of France in 1940 and Reynaud was the Prime Minister. 4 years later Gangl saved the life of the country he previously fought against, a true human hero
This whole situation is like when you were a kid, using all of your assorted toys to play out a nonsense battle. "Ah, yes, American, French, and German soldiers in a medieval castle with a tank fighting Nazis"
This is my take on it. Apart from a few minor points (like that I'd say Gangl's and Jack Lee's and Besotten Jenny's names should have showed up for a bit more and that there were too many quick cuts at the start), it was completely awesome. The song is good on it's own but the combination of that the visuals which match up to the song's lyrics that makes it just awesome (and the symbolism of a US soldier with a Tommy Gun next to a Wehrmacht soldier with an MP40 is just spectacular). Keep up the good work!

You’re right. Many WW2 German soldiers didn’t like the Nazis. The soldiers didn’t have much of a choice though. If they refused to fight, they’d likely be executed by the SS (Nazi secret police) According to the account of a Soviet soldier who was involved in the Battle of Berlin, when the SS started hanging deserters, many Germans started seeing the SS as the enemy. Another account, this one from a German civilian who was ordered to help treat wounded German soldiers, those who refused to fight, even as Berlin was essentially being swallowed whole by the Red Army, were hung up on makeshift gallows.
