- An opera singer's body is their instrument. Their appearance is something to be celebrated and respected.

I applaud your truly thoughtful video, Claudia. Thank you for advocating so eloquently.
Oh Ms. Claudia! How I love this video! Thank you, you take the words right out of my mouth! I love how you do not restrict this to opera singers, but to people in general. Merci beaucoup! :)
This is something I had been wondering about for awhile, primarily the bit about the body being necessary for producing a full range of sound. It's weird to think that anyone critiquing an opera would comment on anyone's body. I guess if you're leveled by talent, the easiest target to strike is someone's appearance.
I think it happens, because newer listeners will read a libretto and wonder why larger people in their 40s are playing quite youthful, vigorous characters, like Siegfried, Parsifal, or Walther von Stolzing. As for the myth of having really large bodies, I don’t believe that for a moment. A singer’s training is more significant than their exact size. No one sings with the power of Birgit Nilsson these days, regardless of their size.
❤️❤️❤️ thanks for your enthusiasm
Thank you for this!
Amen Claudia...love you...love your channel.... people who don't/can't sing in the operatic style have no idea the dedication or work that goes into doing it on a professional level. I applaud you for uploading this video.
Thank you Roger! This upsets me so much, if you can't tell. Those of us who support opera singers work so hard to help them get their voices, bodies and minds in shape, and all of their efforts are undermined when people objectify them.
Absolutely Roger - I can't agree more. I am foremost a musical theatre singer, but I branched into opera and coloratura within this last year. I started learning singing techniques just two years ago, and learning more and more as time passes. I only discovered Claudia a couple of days ago and subscribed immediately because she is the best I have found who teaches coloratura in what I consider to be the best way. But not only that, I have just been practising the vowels without moving the jaw, which I hadn't done before. I sing every day but I have high hopes that I will improve even more now that I am using this site.
@@dianeshepherdlyricsoprano1394 Fantastic Diane! I wish you joy and success on your journey 🌹
@@rogerdanis. Thank you SO VERY MUCH Roger and for commenting back so quickly. I have now applied those techniques to a few opera songs, or opera type, and I am so elated! I have found a new level, the resonance and strength is unbelievable even this early on with this technique new to me. able. Maybe I should be telling this to Claudia herself! Thank you again.
@@dianeshepherdlyricsoprano1394 I couldn't be happier for you!!! Breakthroughs are amazing and build so much confidence because of all the hard work it takes!!!! I am sure you will build on it and have more breakthroughs in the future! Bravo!!!!
GREAT GREATTTT! VIDEO INFORMATIVE AS ALL YOUR VIDEOS. THANK YOU
you mentioned Kathryn Lewek,,i agree..you also mentioned 1:50 i saw a scene of her in th Fly Duet but of course that was took down;;; have you seen it?
Here ,here. Well said. Loving your tutorials ❤️🥰
Hi Claudia, try using a microphone for your videos. The sound is so low, it's barely audible without turning up the volume on my laptop to the max. The content is great, I just can't hear it! xoxo.
I am using an external mic. Looking into getting a better one - is there one that you recommend?
Way to go Claudia! May I just ask again if could just bump up the volume?
Still working that out, I have an external mic but I may need a better one
I have to applaud this video! It was about time people who actually know what they're talking about started speaking against what has been happening everywhere with opera singers!
🔥 🔥 🔥 I like your fierceness against trollish body shaming comments!!
Necessary and wonderful video! Thank you, Mrs Friedlander. Sadly it hurts my heart but I am not going to be able to share this piece publicly since I don't want to help promote those kind of websites or clubs that also have an impact on how society conceive stereotypes on the (mostly female) body, that later leads to bodyshaming and objectification, everywhere not only on stage.
Congratulations for your fine work on singing!🌹
Opera singers, those worth their salt, have very little time for exercising like most folk. Between traveling from country to country, rehearsing, and keeping the voice in shape, jogging around the block is not top of the list. The fact that female opera singers find the time to have kids is utterly remarkable. I couldn’t care less what a singer looks like, but if it is affecting their singing, whether fat, thin, or in between, I’m going to make a fuss for sure.
It is really counterproductive that we have so little support for either exercise or rest during many productions. It really doesn't help us to sing better, to be deprived of relaxation and the time to attend to our fitness and nutrition in whatever way works best for us.
She wrote the "How to train like a Bard" book!
huh?
3:04 - Amen! Also love the porn suggestion. lol
Yes!.Same thing with actresses and actors we are not supposed to be fit all the time.
Yes! My sentiments indeed.
Is your book available on Kindle? (Shame on those critics you were referring to!). Personally I’ve never come across it. GOD bless all those who have the God-given gift to sing 🎤 Opera😍
It is! thanks for asking. The eBook has the illustrations and photos in color, too (in the print book they're black and white) goo.gl/kLc8pF
1:52 yeeeeeesssss!!!!!
Her daughter is 10 months old, not 10 weeks. Thanks for the thoughtful video!
Yikes! well, can't go back and fix it now, but that mistake just goes to show how angry I was!
this is so incredibly true and i loved the shade with the porn links💀
yep
Brava!
About time these people are called out!
I just took a brief look at your book on Amazon. Fascinating. I am past it at this point in my life but to have had such a resource earlier in my singing would have been invaluable. I have mentioned singers as athletes to Dr. Emily Splichal, a podiatrist who works with patients and athletes emphasizing cutting edge foot to core training. If more people, especially professionals, understand this connection it would open up a world of information for both singers and non singers as a part of healing.
👏👏👏👏
GAUNTLET THROWN.
AWESOME! "GO TO A PORN HUB" YASSSSSSSSS Let opera singers use their real bodies to make their own authentic music. "Nobody cares what you think about singers' bodies." LOVE!
Thanks for appreciating my porn joke 😀
Bravo. Wait till the skinny lady sings. I don't think so. You aptly spoke of the physiological reason why everyone waits till the big lady with the big voice sings.
These uneducated buffoons who proliferate the Opera world are responsible for the demise of the art. From a singer's illiterate, teaching voice when he should stay pointing his baton to a higher education system that turns out mediocre voices that have no resemblance to true Opera singing. I cry for what is lost.
not to sink down to their level or anything but i just googled them all and they shouldn't throw stones from their glass houses 😂😂🤣
Hey big girls can sing to 😁
Your wearing a low cut shirt?
Do you think I ought to cover myself up? If so, why!
Nope. I’m just pointing out that you are wearing a low cut shirt. You know exactly what you are doing
@@Allmenshouldrespectallwomen If there is something I was doing other than talking to the camera I honestly have no idea what that would be. I also have no idea why your reaction to this video is to comment on what I'm wearing. I could have made this video in a bear suit or a Disney princess costume and the content would be the same.
@@ClaudiaFriedlander Thanks for clarifying things. But I suggest dressing more modestly if this is a educational channel (:
@@Allmenshouldrespectallwomen It's on brand for me to encourage people to dress any way they feel comfortable. I don't see any advantage to dressing more "modestly" if it feels less authentic to you.
I made this video during the pandemic lockdown. I don't think many of us gave much thought to what we were wearing back then. I did comb my hair before I went on camera. but I was just dressing for comfort.
This is just for context. But generally speaking, unless I am playing a sort of "role" in my videos, I just dress the way I normally dress in them.
Many music critics shouldn’t be commenting on anything. Find another job. Or rather fire them from their jobs. The same thing goes for RUclips trolls.
My main qualification is my ability to care about people.
But I am also DMus (Doctor of Music, McGill University '99) and NASM-CPT, CES, PES (National Academy of Sports Medicine, Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist).
Are there other credentials you think someone should have in order to be qualified to care about the wellbeing and functionality of opera singers, and to offer opinions and advice on the topic?
I actually just realized that your comment is ambiguous enough that I can't tell whether you are advising the opera critics to find another job or telling me to, so apologies if I got that wrong.
@@ClaudiaFriedlander
My comments were aimed at nasty music critics and RUclips trolls. No, not certainly at you. I often get into confrontation with RUclips troll that berate singers for every possible reason as voice type, the choice of roles and comparing them with other singers and also body shaming them. I really enjoyed your video and agreed with everything you said. I’m sixty seven years old and have been attending opera for fifty five of those years. I totally know and appreciate the training and troubles that singers go thru.
thank you for this!
