Really great video. I like it when videos about gaming use their own experiences and memories cause that is very important. I do think when it comes to being afraid if a game hasn't held up that's alright. One of my most cherished and favorite games is Zelda Majora's Mask. The time window in which I played that game was so important. It made me see games as more than just a series of levels that had to be beat and led me to appreciate all the experiences and stories as what they can give us and make us feel. They are also a huge time investment and sometimes a replay can be a small as playing the opening again. Gaming discourse in my opinion has made it so hard to talk about flaws without completely dismissing a game in it's entirety. I do think though the first experience of a game is the most impactful part. Final Fantasy 7,8 and 9 have really good HD rereleases that add faster battling and some things that make the game a little easier and less dated which a few other RPG remasters have done. Happy gaming.

Thanks Elliot, I’m glad you enjoyed! I’ve only got one memory of Zelda (wind waker) growing up and that was the bright (white) loading screen you’d get as you go through a door lol - the newer titles are on my backlog to play (poor of me not to have played them lol)
There is a lot of positivity around the FF HD remakes that speed up gameplay, so I may overcome my ‘fear’ and give them a proper try! Thanks for watching and hope to see you around :)

I've never really had a problem with old graphics and tank controls and annoying combat I don't know why but I like old games a lot.

Nostalgia with games is like looking at them through rose-tinted glasses. You remember how you felt back then and what they were like, but going back, you realise how hard and clunky the controls were. (Kids today have it so easy 😂) it's why we want those old games remade, so we can experience our nostalgia, just with better controls.
I bought the PS1 Tomb Raider games on vita. Hated every second 😭 the camera was ass

The only game that I like REALLY replayed was the Witcher 3 and that like 8-9 times😭😂other games I really enjoyed felt boring after a couple of hours because I knew where it will go and how it ends but in the Witcher I always found new things to do and discovered new side quests or secrets I previously missed

That's a good shout to be fair - I've only had one playthrough but I could tell there is so much more to the world to be seen! It's cool that on the higher difficulties more care needs to go into defeating enemies & actually finding out their weaknesses. I would say this game still holds up fairly well being modern, so am sure if I was to revisit I'd still have a blast! xD

I played FF7 6 months ago for the first time and I really liked it, as someone who grew up with a ps2 I never had a ps1. I don’t think games age bad it’s probably your zoomer taste lmao. FF7 aged pretty well gameplay wise, especially MGS1 surprisingly

    • @Deathroff

      Defo my zoomer taste xD
I do recall playing Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII when I was younger and really enjoyed it, however lots of retrospective content that I’ve watched throws a lot of shade on it lol. Something for me to go back and revisit.

Going back to old games feels like such a hit or miss, like there's no in-between.
I bought the original Vice City thinking it would be a fun time like when I played it as a kid but I forgot how horrible the combat is and small the map is, only lasted a few hours and had to uninstall it. On the other hand replaying Mafia 2 was amazing and everything I remembered it being.
I think you're right that as we're older and can buy our own games now, sometimes it's not worth risking the memory/idea of a game we have in our head when there's so many new experiences out there. I was talking to my pal about MW2 back in the day and how great it was but you forget about the one man army noob tubes, death streaks and javelin glitch that would've made the game unplayable today.
For what it's worth I replayed Last of Us earlier this year and it holds up, played it on Survivor and it feels like a different game from when I originally played it years ago on normal.
    TLDR - Great video, I agree 😂

    • @Deathroff

I completely agree it is a gamble, I never played the Mafia games originally but really enjoyed the first one (remastered)! I think now with the amount of content available we really are spoilt for choice and can have more of an opinion - back in the day of course reviews were a thing, but more often than not you’d probs accept a game is bad and continue playing it (as there wasn’t much else). You’re completely right on the MW2 point😂 my memory continently glosses over noob tubes & Martyrdom 😭 That’s good to hear, I will more than likely look to pick the Last of Us on a sale in the new year & maybe tackle the Part 2 as well! Thanks for watching my guy, hope your good 👊😃

Can’t help but agree with your points. I don’t tend to go back and revisit games, especially when there are constantly new games coming out I want to try. Maybe it’s a younger generations perspective with not enjoying older games. Would be interesting to gain an ‘older’ gamers perspective!

Great video! I liked the time stamps. In general, as much as I enjoy a game, I feel like I have to move on at some point, whether that means moving on altogether or enjoying the contents of that game in a different way (like enjoying the art or music individually).

Thank you! Yeah, as I’ve got older I’ve started to enjoy game soundtracks a lot more & how it brings the game together. Final fantasy 16 being a good recent example!

Nostalgia is a beautiful thing but a dangerous one at that! I have a huge fear of going back to childhood favourites and now hating them. 😅

    • @Deathroff
      @Deathroff  Год назад +1

such an interesting topic! I do think I'm edging more towards the camp of full on remakes such as FF7 as it kinda still preserves the memory of a childhood favourite!

At about halfway through the video, your point about the old Final Fantasy VII vs. the new one really stood out to me. I don't think it's a weird take at all. I grew up with Kingdom Hearts (the franchise, starting with 1 & 2, and still love it to this day despite some of its flaws in hindsight), and although I love Final Fantasy X, I don't love PLAYING Final Fantasy X. For me, it comes down to prefering the quicker paced movement of action JRPGs as opposed to the turn-based ones. I would also love to see a remake of FFX rather than a remaster, though the remaster is great at what it set out to do and I can respect it for that. 😌
The fear of replaying games and ruining those moment-defining experiences is a valid one. I'm actually the opposite in most cases, I'm afraid to play new games and replace my old favorites with new ones. I often replayed my favorite games from childhood - and still do, even the ones that aged horribly. Despite the flaws I see and feel a lot more now, I still feel nostalgic and love the games. They were newer - and sometimes funner - as a child, and I'll always hold those memories near and dear to my heart, so re-plays don't erase those memories but instead enhance them by creating more layers from the years beyond.
I think it depends what you play games for. Is it for the story, the characters, the world and exploration, the actual gameplay, the music and visual immersion? What each game does best depends on the genre and style of its identity as well.
It's also very possible that it's so easy for me to return to older, nostalgic games because I'm still broke and can't afford new games, so I stick to my known franchise loyalties until I can branch out more. 😅 Good video, and I hope you find more revisited games to be fun in new or similar ways rather than disappointing if you do choose to revisit them. 😁

It would be awesome to see FFX & FFVIII remade just like FF7 has been - would be really awesome! That's a really interesting perspective of playing new games / replacing older favourites. You have inspired me to give older games a chance again, and I hope this inspires you to try something new and awesome!
I think for me, once I've played a story for the majority of games it just feels pointless to play again as I know what to expect. I think RPGs obvs have the greatest replay value opposed to simpler story focused titles, as the characters and world exploration / immersion still hits good.
I am in a very fortunate position to afford new games (normally wait for a sale on new games thou) and also having the PS Plus extra helps expose me to more games!
Since this video I have been back to quite a few ps3 titles to clean up the platinums on streams, some better than others but the overall experience has been fun!
