- Here's a video of my Spanish learning journey so far (1 year 9 months & counting!) and some reflections I’ve had about the process.
Sorry that for the timelapse I only have clips of me speaking from 1 year 4 months till now :( It didn’t occur to me to film myself speaking when I first started out, but I still wanted to share what I do have.
There’s no quick fix to language learning, there’s no “getting fluent in 30 days” or even 3-6 months (in my opinion!!), but the long journey is worth it :)
My fellow language learners, hope this video inspires you to keep on going :) just like how videos of other people’s journeys have inspired me in the past. If you’re a Spanish speaker, feel free to correct my mistakes, I’m always looking to learn from them! Oh, and comment 🌮 if you read till here hehe (thank you for reading x)

I'm so glad I stumbled across this video because I am just coming up to my 1 year anniversary teaching myself Spanish and am also feeling that disappointment in my (seeming) lack of progress. It's like I know that language learning is a long process, but sometimes that's hard to accept. Especially when I see videos like the ones you mentioned about "How I learned Spanish in 30 days." I hate those kinds of videos haha. So thanks for talking about all this in your video! And by the way, I ALSO struggle with fue vs. era vs. estaba vs. estuve...it's so hard to wrap my head around, especially in the middle of conversation. Great video!
1 year studying Spanish alone is no small feat! You should be proud of yourself for sticking to it for so long 😊 sometimes it’s hard to tell our own level of progress, but I’m sure you’re improving! and yes estar vs ser is hella annoying haha, glad you relate 😅keep on going!! 💪🏻
This is so helpful! I'm about one month into picking Spanish back up from high school and I've been practicing everyday. Before I started, I thought I was pretty decent . But now I really realize just how much I definitely do not know, and it is so humbling! It's comforting to remember that a language is a lifelong journey and acquiring language doesn't need to be an overnight thing or even a thing that requires our "excellence". Just our persistence in the long run to stubbornly drill grammar and make anki cards FOREVA

Me sacaste un par de lágrimas con lo último que hablaste. Siempre me preguntaba por qué estudiaba algunos idiomas que tal vez nunca usaría. Pero me di cuenta que simplemente puedo estudiar y aprender otros idiomas porque me gustan. ¡Tu español es muy bueno! Me encantó tu video.

I’m a native Spanish speaker and I just wanted to say you all are doing great ☺️💜Spanish is even hard sometimes for us Spaniards and more so taking into account the differences between Latin American Spanish and Spanish from Spain.
However I’m studying Korean and French by myself and I now the struggle of feeling no progress is being made but I heard something some time ago that kinda changed my perspective and I hope it can help you too (eventhough I tend to forget about it too lol😅).
When I feel down or unmotivated to keep going I just think that by making a little effort to improve just 1% each day, by the end of the year I would be +37% better at what I’m doing.
I don’t know about you, but this makes me feel less overwhelmed when I have tons of things to do and I can’t dedicate a lot of time to my language studies🙆🏻♀️ As if even when I’m progressing so little it will have a big impact on the long run🙆🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️

Thanks for the thoughts! I feel a bit stuck at the moment with Italian. I recently moved to Italy and I'm overwhelmed with how much I don't understand so this video actually made me feel a bit better and gave motivation to keep studying because let's be honest, you can manage perfectly with speaking so good job!
For sure, being in a foreign country makes you realize how you don’t know how to say small stuff that you automatically know how to say in your native language, but I’m sure you’re doing great! And on the bright side, being in Italy gives you an advantage to learn faster 😊 all the best 💪🏻
Good video! First of all, I want to thank the author of the channel for making this beautiful and useful video for us! Many people are embarrassed to speak a foreign language if they have no speaking skills. People are afraid to hear criticism from others in their address. It all comes from having a psychological complex - to make a mistake. But, after all, he who does nothing is not wrong! In Yuriy Ivantsiv's workshop "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign language" states that we need to talk as much as possible: with yourself, with the mirror, with inanimate objects, with children and with pets. Find an interlocutor in real life or online. Talk without shyness. People won't care how you speak. They understand that you are a foreigner, as long as they understand you. They may even acknowledge your progress in their language and compliment you. However, always be prepared for criticism of your speaking skills. If you have the will to speak, you will gain an interesting interlocutor to consolidate your knowledge. Everyone is strewn with mistakes - don't be afraid to learn from them. As the Latin wisdom says, "walk and thou shalt not go astray". In the book "Polyglot Notes" by Yuriy Ivantsiv an entire chapter is devoted to the development of spoken language. Here you will find many useful tips and each student can choose a technique that suits him or her best! I wish you all the best of luck in your language learning!

¡Creo que has hecho un excelente trabajo! ¡Felicidades! Siento que solo necesitas seguir escuchando una variedad de audios y videos, formales e informales, de material auténtico para que las conjugaciones y preposiciones que acompañan a los verbos las aprendas de memoria. Como adultos que aprendemos una lengua extranjera queremos descubir cada regla, y el porqué de todo; sin embargo, a veces es mejor simplemente memorizar y dejarse llevar. En especial, las lenguas romances, como lo son el español o el francés; están llenas de excepciones. Por lo cual, pienso que simplemente, entre más escuches memorizaras las "collocations" que van con cada verbo y mejorarás. En ocasiones, solo necesitas saber la razón si lo vas a enseñar. Enfócate en el español de México porque en ocasiones el uso de preposiciones y verbos varia dependiendo del lugar. Por cierto, se puede decir tanto "la fiesta fue divertida" como "la fiesta estuvo divertida". Ambas son válidas.
Hola Victoria, buen video, yo vi tu video de cuando fuiste a México también. Pienso que eres un poco dura contigo misma, a lo que me refiero es que tu nivel de español es excelente, e independientemente de algunos errores de conjugación (que son muy pocos) se entiende todo lo que dices a la perfección. Yo llevo 2 años aprendiendo sola japonés, y aunque conozco muchas frases, no creo que podría sostener una larga conversación, o explicar en un vídeo de más de 10 minutos mi experiencia aprendiendo el idioma totalmente en japonés! Al igual que tú, no tengo gente a mi alrededor para practicar, pero lo aprendo porque me gusta. Yo aprendí Francés, porque en donde vivo ahora es el idioma que se habla, pero aunque he vivido aquí tantos años, mi pronunciación está lejos de ser perfecta, y es que siendo hispanohablante hay sonidos que no existen en español y me cuesta mucho, es frustrante! Pero, no te desanimes y sigue adelante, el español es un idioma que se habla en muchísimos países, y siempre hay latino en donde menos te lo esperas! Te recomiendo ver programas de tv en español, eso ayuda mucho.

El japonés especialmente es difícil, he tenido experiencia aprendiendo otros idiomas con caracteres como chino, y todavía se me hizo difícil aprenderlo, entonces tú también no te desanimes 😊 te deseo lo mejor con tus idiomas!

You speak so well! How do you study now? Do you look up phrases when you don't know how to say something or practice from a book?
Thank you! :) I study now by watching videos and reading books and inputing any new phrases or words into Anki (flash cards), and I practice the flash cards everyday. I’m also using the DELE B2 book to study and grow my existing grammar and vocab 😊 oh and also continuing to chat w native speakers by text and call!

Hi Victoria, Thanks for your great videos. I am 9 months into learning Spanish through comprehensible Input. I wanted to ask you when did you start speaking and how did you do that? Did you start speaking with Italki or some other medium? Any advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks, regards John
Hi John, congrats on starting your language journey and coming so far! I started speaking v early in my journey, perhaps from the 2-3rd month? I spoke both in class and by finding language exchange partners on apps like Speaky and Tandem (speaking w partners was much more helpful than in class cos in class you can keep quiet but when you're in a 1-1 convo you have no choice but to speak). It was a LONG process but over time I became more and more confident in speaking about various topics of increasing difficulty. I think using italki is also a great option (I was cheap and didn't want to spend extra money, but on italki, your learning will be more efficient. I went over to italki when I alr had decent conversational fluency). I also had convos w myself a lot haha, which were actly v helpful in identifying the gaps in my convo skills. Hope this helps!

I am at 9 months learning Spanish and I haven't started speaking yet, with the exception of speaking aloud to myself (making up conversations) - like yourself. I haven't had much luck with "Hello Talk". I found difficulty in finding the right person. I have been thinking of just paying for a tutor on Italki and just doing some online speaking conversations.
It was interesting that you also suggested doing the same. I agree that paying for a tutor for Spanish conversations is going to be much more efficient in the early stages. I have found your videos on your language journey to be very beneficial. Its great to hear someone speak with honesty and explain the downs as well as the ups. Many people on the internet have hidden agendas and you don't know what is true or just sales talk. I hope you keep making videos of your language journey in the future. Thanks again. John.

Hola, soy de Colombia y te quiero decir que no te preocupes mucho por aprender el idioma muy apegado a las reglas gramaticales, ya que como nativos también lo hablamos y escribimos no tan apegado a estas reglas, y además a mi parecer tienes una buena pronunciación en general hablas muy bien el español.
Gracias 🥺 tal vez es por ser perfeccionista que quiero dominar la gramática 😆 pero sí reconozco poder comunicar es lo más importante :)

I already graduated, majored in Environmental Studies and I got an external scholarship (not from the university)
