    Cool video. But I think it all depends on where and how you hunt and the game you hunt for arrow weights. No wrong answers one way or the other whatever works for you and gives you confidence and clean kills.

      We agree 100% we’ve shot anywhere from 365 grains up to 645 haha and it really does depend on your own set up, what your hunting for and how far your shooting or if your able to get a precise range or not. We sure are liking this mid weight arrow set up! Thank you for watching ☺️

    You will love the new set up, I ran an archery shop for a number of years and have archery hunted for 40 years and have always have pushed the limit of light arrow and speed. I used to shoot a Hoyt super tech that drew 87Lbs ani shot arrows that were 7.2gr an inch my draw length is right around 27 to 28 inches and shot thru everything with that bow. I short an elk at 76 yards and it didn’t even flinch on its way thru. Around 400grains was the heaviest arrow I would shoot! Can’t wait for the archery videos to come. Love you guys and you will love the new setups. Great job on all the research you did. No they won’t unscrew any more than the other way! The biggest thing is they almost rattle loose if anything, for hunting set up you can run the week thread locker if ya wanted just a tiny dot on the threads but not needed! Love you guys so much❤
    Don’t listen to the haters/naysayers I would shoot light over heavy for any animal up to a moose! You guys are on the right track!

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  19 дней назад +2

      Thank you so much Matt! Thats awesome you used to own an archery shop! We have slowly gone heavier and heavier over the years and its nice to back off the weight for sure! We both use 5 pin sliding sights (spot Hogg) and have our pins set at 30-40-50-60-70 and are able to slide out to 120+ with our new set ups! Which is so awesome for 3-D shoots and the extra yardage without having to move out sights will be sweet for open country, spot and stalk pronghorn!
      I just shot a whitetail buck, only had time to range a bush as I was on the ground and there was no definite trail he was going to take. I ended up having to guess the yardage some and merp to stop him making him aware of my presence. I shot him for a 48 yard heart shot and even though he did string jump I was able to hit high lung. Had that been my old set up it would have been too slow to hit him well with his quick reaction. I also would not have felt comfortable guessing the yardage. My 442 grain arrow zipped through him like hot butter. It was incredible (we will be posting a vid of this hunt soon)
      I think we are on the right track and watching videos testing penetration, the difference in penetration between a 350/450/550/650 grain arrow was actually close to zero. so despite what people often think, those heavier arrows actually aren't penetrating any better. I think FOC and speed make a huge difference and of course having everything tuned well.
      As far as loudness of the lighter arrows, my ears don't pick up any difference between my old 561 and my new 442 grain arrows, I don't have as good of hearing as a deer, but I don't think its going to make much of a difference, my old bow versus my new bow is a bigger difference in noise than the arrow weight itself haha!
      To each their own for sure, but I am with you... a flatter trajectory and faster speed sure seems to be the ticket when your spot and stalk hunting on the ground and cant always get a precise range.
      87lb draw with that light of an arrow I bet that was one heck of a set up!
      Thank you for watching! We really appreciate the support :)

    at least you guys went middle of the road with weight, and you actually tried a heavier arrow.
    most people won’t try it, and the rest will go to the drastic lightweight after trying heavy.

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  18 дней назад

      Thanks for watching! We’ve slowly gone heavier and heavier over the years and have shot as light as 365 several years ago. But I think in the last couple of years we crossed the point of diminishing returns on arrow weight with our set ups,
      so we are dialing it back a bit lol. We don’t think heavy or light is wrong, just depends on your set up and what you’re hunting. For us, with our current set ups I think we found what should work awesome! ☺️👍🏼

    This is a great video. For any hunting style that requires unknown exact ranges (preset stands and feeders) then range forgiveness is huge. Animal reaction times must be accounted for as well.
    Middle weight arrows and normal setups aren't sexy but they are likely the best setup for most.

    It's not just the weight of the arrow causing the drop, it's the high foc causing the arrow to nose dive. Even if both arrows weighed the same but one was 11% foc and one was 17% foc, the 17% arrow would drop much faster than the 11%. 10% foc is all you need. You should try lowering your foc from 16% and you will see much better trajectory. I have some 420grain sonics at 17% and some fmj at 10.7%, and at 20 yards the heavier fmj arrows hit the target 6 inches higher than the lighter but high foc sonics

Serious question now, bear in mind i have no knowledge of stick and string hunting. Is the string noise of your bows loud? Great video. Hope your bow hunting is very successful Alyssa and Jason.

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  16 дней назад +1

      Haha! Well that’s a super good question! The string definitely makes noise as the bow goes off, but there are some people who think the more significant noise comes from the arrow flying through the air towards the target. I don’t know which matters more, but I have a feeling it’s some kind of combination 😊

    Taking 60-yard shots at elk with a bow is generally considered unethical and risky by most bowhunters because at such a long distance, the margin for error is significantly high, increasing the chance of a poor hit, wounding the animal, and making a clean kill difficult, even for highly skilled archers; the ideal bowhunting strategy is to get as close as possible to the animal before taking a shot, typically within a much shorter range.
    Key reasons why taking long-distance bow shots at elk is discouraged:
    Accuracy concerns:
    At 60 yards, even a slight deviation in arrow placement can result in a non-lethal hit, potentially causing suffering to the animal.
    Elk movement:
    Elk are large and can easily move their vital organs away from the aiming point at the moment of release, especially if they are alerted to the shot.
    Ethical considerations:
    Bowhunting is traditionally considered a close-range hunting method, and taking long-distance shots can be seen as pushing the boundaries of ethical hunting practices.

    • @coryr1948
      @coryr1948 19 дней назад

      anyone boasting about taking longer distant shots on live animals makes you sound incompetent of understanding the ethical concerns surrounding your claims.

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  18 дней назад +1

      Wow! While I appreciate you taking the time to write all this, I respectfully disagree. With today’s tools and technology, a 60 yard shot at an elk who is unaware seems very ethical- assuming you’ve taken time to dial in your equipment and practice. Hunting is one of our life passions, and we practice out to 70+ yards consistently. I’m not saying everyone’s effective range should be 60 yards, I but I feel comfortable saying it’s our effective range.
      Good luck to you on your future hunting adventures, and again, thanks for sharing your thoughts- they’re valuable, for sure!

      The closer, the better in my opinion 😊

  • @richarddean3154
    @richarddean3154 20 дней назад

    Great video. That said, first of all, one cannot build an arrow that is faster than an animal's reaction, especially at 50-yards. Second, whatever weight you remove, you increase the noise that your bow generates (see DIY Sportsman), which increases the likelihood that an animal will react to your shot. Third, you detail the terminal performance of your heavy arrows (with the elk and pronghorn performance), yet are willing to trade it away for trajectory gains, even though you make the use of laser rangefinders. Interesting rationale.

    • @MTN_BUILT
      @MTN_BUILT  20 дней назад +3

      Those are such great points! And we’ve definitely thought about all of them… that’s a big reason why we dropped to a moderate weight instead of to light weight arrows. We’re thinking that we’ll have similar penetration with better trajectory, and Alyssa just shot a buck with her new setup last week… the arrow zipped through the buck extremely quickly, and buried in the dirt behind the buck.
      Your point about rangefinders is well received and they’re an invaluable tool. But our experience has been that animals rarely stand still long enough to get an exact range- especially elk. We usually wind up ranging a bush or some kind of landmark, and then we estimate based on that known point. The flat trajectory on our new setups will be a huge positive in that type of situation.
      I think there’s a point of diminishing returns with arrow weight, and I think it’s probably around 500 grains. I’m no expert- that’s just my feeling 😊
      I really appreciate you taking time to share your opinion though!
      Happy hunting! 👊🏼

    So the trajectory test is not accurate. Of course the 2 arrows will have different impacts. Shooting the heavy arrow with the sights set for the light arrow will absolutely be different. To correctly do that test shoot each arrow from a properly sighted in setup for that specific arrow. Then shoot at a distance past what you’re shooting for. So say you use 50 yds shoot the heavy arrow properly sighted for 50 then shoot at 60 yds while using your 50 yard pin. Now you’re truly measuring the difference. Do the same test with both arrows

    • @MTN_BUILT
