  • Furniture flippers and painters sometime get a bad name for painting pieces that might be better restored. When I started on this project I was not sure which route I would take with the project. Once I started cleaning and stripping the old shellac there was only one choice.

That wood grain! No words. Great job! I would like to see a tour of your basement setup. I’d like to set up in our basement too

I had a feeling it was going to be nice but did not expect it to be that nice. I might do a little tour sometime although there is not that much to show. The space looks much bigger on camera.

Thank you - I had a feeling the grain on this piece was going to be super nice. All that time removing the old finish was so worth it. It looked even better than I could have hoped for.

Thank you thats such a nice thing to say. I did quite a bit of research into the company that made this. H Coleman and Sons. Being able to put names and faces to the people that made something really changes the way you feel about a piece. Such a well made piece, of all the pieces I have done at or around 100 years old this might be the one that still feels like its new.

Thanks Cathy - I had so many Art Deco pieces from last year I have almost worked through them all. This was one of the nicest to work with it much better condition than the rest. Nice to be able to restore this one too not always the case.

You do such beautiful work. What I especially love is how you treat each piece of furniture with reverence for it's history. Well done!

Thank you - the history of the piece I really did not go super into. H Coleman and sons made it - I found family website about that company and it was a fascinating. Seeing photos of people who might have made it or at the very least inspected this piece really added a lot to the project for me.

Ok, I’ll admit it: when you said you were going to modernize the piece a bit, my heart sank just a scooch. I was envisioning a paint/wood combo. Fooled me! 😂 It looks lovely.

I have done quite a number of depression pieces over the last year. Most of them came from including this one from the same estate auction. I full expected that top to be a painted on finish once I found out if was a Walnut veneer in such good condition only one thing to do. Its not the direction I thought the project would go in but I could not be happier with the result.

It is a wonderful piece in both looks and size makes it feel very grand. If your is similar I can see why you have to hang onto it I am thinking about doing the same with this one.
