Have friends that lived just down the road. When I came over for visit, we would go to Grianan. Majestic! There is a Holy Well about 20 feet away down the little path to the side of the ring fort. Wonderful memories of my weeks there 🍀💚

What a fabulous day! I have never seen anything like that ringfort. I don't think there is anything like it anywhere in Ireland. I find that extraordinarily strange. I wonder are there any similar ringforts around Europe. Dunree is amazing! Again I had never heard of this historical military significant place! We loved our short break at Inishshowen!

I just googled it Tom & got this reply:-
Ringforts, ring forts or ring fortresses are circular fortified settlements that were mostly built during the Bronze Age up to about the year 1000. They are found in Northern Europe, especially in Ireland. There are also many in South Wales and in Cornwall, where they are called rounds. Apparently there are about 40,000 sites in Ireland that have been identified as ring forts.

Hi Colin, I've come across quite a few ring forts but nothing to match this. This is massive. It is not unique as I thought but big ones like this are very few and far between in Ireland. There is a hint of a Roman amphitheatre about this. There ar 2 similar substantial ones on Kerry. Ring forts, Cahergall (CARE-HER-GAL) and Leacanabuaile (LACK-AN-NAH-BYOO-LAH) are two of the most well-preserved stone forts in County Kerry,

Hi Tom, yes I saw the ones you mentioned in my search on google. They are few and far between but very impressive as you say!

Brilliant video.. The ringfort Grianan fort is a 5 min drive from my house. Back when I was younger the doors inside the fort were open, you can actually walk around inside the walls. Of I remember correctly it was for storing grain or animal feed. There is also a secret escape tunnel. It goes from inside the fort with the escape exit just down the hill from the fort... Very clever indeed
