My family and I stayed at many Days Inns during the 1980's and 90's. In those days they were pretty nice! I think their quality started going downhill in the first decade of the 2000's, though they were still pretty good then. Since then, they've unfortunately become pretty rough at many or maybe most locations. My last Days Inn stay, at Terre Haute, IN in 2021, was the worst I have experienced. Somehow the many corporate ownership changes from Tollman-Hundley to HFS to Cendant to two incarnations of Wyndham have not been good for the good ole Days Inn brand.
Traveling in the '90's, there were a few Days Inns I regularly stayed at. They were always clean, felt safe and some had a very good breakfast. They were often very reasonably priced. There were more upscale brands nearby that I now prefer, but at the time the value couldn't be beat. I have seen reviews of locations I used to frequent. Unfortunately, it appears at some locations, one might feel more comfortable in their car for an overnight.
Slight correction: The original logo had a number 8 in the sunburst. It was because the original name was '8 Days Inn,' due to the original nightly rate being 8 bucks.

The last time I saw a days inn that sold gas was 1992.
