That's great thanks! People underestimate the value of an old android phone. They have so many uses and this video has given me another one. Now to stick a big magnet to mine and put it on my daughters boyfriends car :0
+shawn G I tell you man... Not the ideal solution, however, I've seen some cool Android reuse then this thought came to me. Thanks for watching and appreciate that you liked the video/idea.
RecarroJames Hey, it's a Bosion something or other off ebay. Running android 4.4.2, It's good enough for my needs. Cost me £148 posted. Will be making a vid on it as I'm currently wiring my car up for audio.
Now I've noticed the date! It was actually in my birth day (24th Nov ahah)! Yeah it still works and was really fast finding the phone, I've bought a motorcycle and those can get in the wrong hands real quick... Bikes have the bad habit of riding vans, go figure! Anyway, I do have an old ZTE L3 Blade that I can disassemble and place it somewhere inside the chassis of it. I guess I could use google APIs to control some electronics with this (trigger engine shutdown, on android gyroscope "trigger" send a message to another cellphone for instance). You really made my brain jiggle!
@@RiderRickMakerawesome! 😁😊✌️. Come to think of it, that same phone I used to demo is not old and isn't being used. I could just use it permanently for that reason right now... Thanks man 👍

Will do! :) Mine is brand locked but hopefully I'll manage to do the unlocking and some app to track it properly! Regarding your phone, just use it, put it on some water resitant case and you'll be good to go I guess! I think I'll make a tutorial on it as soon as I get things done! (might take a while thou..!) Thank you!
You dont need internet connection or a sim card, all you have to do is turn location on and you would be able to track it. It is not detailed like real gps, but it can get the job done. I been using it for 3 years
Marco Hercante I was thinking, you could include the charging cables with the wiring harness and run behind the dash just as the wires from and alarm or tracking system would.
This is a good idea, I'm going to try it with an old phone. Do you have an idea of how much data is used from the location services if the phone is used for nothing else?
Any answer on this? Want also use my old phone as tracker but dont know how much data it wil use from Google services and background usage (per month) the cheapest data plan available in my country is 2,99€ then you get 1GB every month.
Rmyers47 no son, just a different approach to a tracking solution that could be worthwhile to some. Not just Jamaica 🇯🇲 but also in Canada or The United States or pretty much anywhere in the world.
tonnie4u2 either remove, charge and then return it to that hidden location. My Andros car radio has a USB port so I buy a longer USB cable and keep it connected.
Depending on the car it may be possible to get behind the cigarate lighter and hide the connection behind the panels. And then there is the other problem of battery draw when the car is off and parked but it shouldn't be bad if the car is driven even couple of days
owen could be wired to the ignition like an alarm... My installer did that with a modem I was using in car some years ago and added a switch, so even when the car was turned off I could still be in a parking area getting WiFi. Maybe a similar approach could be taken.
I just have a pay-as-you-go SIM card in mine & top it up when the credit runs out. But it literally takes forever for it to deplete because the amount of data used is so low. I also get a decent wi-fi signal on my driveway, so by leaving the phone's wi-fi turned on it uses up even less data when parked at home.
Great Solution, better than fixed Tracking Devices that are harder to remove when you sell the car.
My thoughts exactly. And now with smartphones even smarter and better tracking apps, it should be a more worthwhile setup

I'll have to stop making comments after I've had a glass of wine. ;)
shawn G lol
Use google maps instead. Just make sure that it is allowed to share live location when requested by your google user :)
Can’t it work offline ? Even when the phone is off data the current location should still appear on the site for tracking !
Respect bro, this really helped me out cause I was planning on getting a new car radio so thanks.
Tracking through the android head unit suits me. Subbed. From the UK. 😎
+Tosseef Hussain cool... 😎 which android head unit do you use?

Tosseef Hussain oh cool... Link me up when the video is ready, would really wanna see it.
RecarroJames Will do brother, won't be fancy as I have no editing software but I'll try my best.
Tosseef Hussain no worries bruh... Even a video from a phone will do
For small taxi companies. Can you track more than one device on the same screen?
You would have to toggle between devices in the drop down menu
Dude....Greetings from Portugal! I wasn't sure if this would work but.... tried it! A++!!
Greetings... How well did it work for you? I did this a few years back, I'm assuming it should work a bit better with the smartphones we now have.

o man, we have the same phone! i have also oneplus2 for 3 years now and its very good
but the hidden phone needs to have Internet access right? so it would need a working sim card on it with a data plan, I'm I right?
Nikolas Manuelides you are correct for sure.
this is a great trick... however another data plan is kinda expensive :(... I think an actual GPS tracking device would be cheaper.. am I wrong?
@@wwcrxww GPS Tracker devices need a data Plan to function as well :)
@@Niko-gr3yo yeah your right, I learned this after more research. 😁

Old phone so basically, I got to pay for two data plans for this to work.
just use a pay as you go sim in the "tracker" phone, and your unlikely to use much data
i did it twice,,and my phone turned on but when i restarted it ,,the same problem came back ,,,feel, bad about it
very good idea thanks for the knowledge brother big up
Happy you liked it. Bless up 🤜🏽
this is actually not a bad idea at all. i like to put it as a permanent device so I need to find a clean way to hide the charging cables
Marco Hercante I was thinking, you could include the charging cables with the wiring harness and run behind the dash just as the wires from and alarm or tracking system would.
seems very clean like this
This is a good idea, I'm going to try it with an old phone. Do you have an idea of how much data is used from the location services if the phone is used for nothing else?
Melvin Hernandez unfortunately no I don't. I didn't go that far in checking.

What happens if the battery runs out? Do you have to charge it every now and then
Would actually wire it like a tracker so that it has constant USB power
Do cars get stolen that much in Jamaica that you have to hide a phone?
Rmyers47 no son, just a different approach to a tracking solution that could be worthwhile to some. Not just Jamaica 🇯🇲 but also in Canada or The United States or pretty much anywhere in the world.
RecarroJames Pretty ingenious thinking there man! Liking your videos so far!
Rmyers47 cool that's man... Appreciate the luv bruh... Have a few more stuff to upload before the year ends so, stay tuned.
so bro .. if you click ring n the car is off would it work ?
+cameron X you're referring to the Car Radio? No you won't, you would get the location when the car is turned on.
+RecarroJames if the phone is off...can u still track?
cool dude, buy a old mobile instead off a gps device.
that phone have to have internet right?
That's right
How do you keep it charged
tonnie4u2 either remove, charge and then return it to that hidden location. My Andros car radio has a USB port so I buy a longer USB cable and keep it connected.

what if i am not using android ?
I am sure I can get it to work with apple and the find my iPhone/iDevice application. This test is long overdue.
also best to get it wired up to a cigarate lighter so that you wont have to charge those awful battery eating android phones everyday.
+owen will try a USB permanent setup and see how that works out. But still need it hidden.

Does the phone need to be connected to a carrier?
Yes it needs to be. That's how you'd be connected and be able to track and for it to provide locations and GPS coordinates.
would't you need unlimited data for this to work??
Most definitely. You would need an unlimited data plan. But isn't data affordable these days?
I just have a pay-as-you-go SIM card in mine & top it up when the credit runs out. But it literally takes forever for it to deplete because the amount of data used is so low.
