There is also a hidden pocket behind the zippered one in the main compartment. It holds a rigid plastic sheet along with a foam. You can remove it if you don't need it or you have to thoroughly clean the bag. I use mine with foam only, no need for plastic frame.

I prefer it as a sling bag carry and agree a man purse (let's not argue that women got it right lol) in a smaller size is ideal in most situations. I like the quality of this bag and the design is excellent. I tend to go slightly larger than that as the UK weather is changeable and a waterproof is necessary most of the time regardless of the season. Again a smashing video beautifully shot and with your trademark quiet, informative presentation. Many thanks.

Great video. I do the exact same with my Hill People Gear Buttpack and Bottle Holsters on their Prairie Belt. Love the minimalist set up with weight off of my shoulders and a hot pack off of my back.

Great video, Aaron. I have one in the exact same color as yours and I use it as a man purse ("over the shoulder" lol). When I carry larger backpacks (anything over 35 liters) I also pack this purse inside so I can use it as a destination bag. It fits a surprising amount of stuff, which is why I'm glad it has the compression straps. I've even used it as a gym bag a few times.

Simply a fantastic review and a well put together summary of form and function. With the ever increasing amount of EDC kit on the market, it's important to remember that twice as much kit doesn't (always) make you twice as effective.

Love the Maxpedition pouches...they seem to multiply like rabbits at our house. I also am a huge fan of sling bags that can convert in carry methods. I have a couple of 5.11’s that I use for this purpose, but they don’t have the fanny pack mode. I’m going to go check out the hip monkey! Great video!

I agree with the concept, I really like my Helikon-Tex Foxtrot MKII Buttpack Belt Rig!
Having simple suspension system/shoulder straps will make it more comfortable too.

I've owned two of these over the years; still have both. The versatility has been a great strength. Daily carry, field bag, first aid kit, and even as a diaper bag. Only gripe is that the straps will slip through the buckle, but this is quickly remedied with a double-back, and constant pressure.
Better buy a couple more before you drive the price ;) Nice mini review. Thanks again!

Great video. I love MR and have done the same thing but with the large Mountainsmith bag. I've found it to be lighter and, most importantly, to have a much better ability to carry weight while active. The "Delta Straps" combined with their minimal shoulder strap system ("Strappettes") result in a bag that stays put even while mountain biking, snowboarding or hiking / scrambling off trail. Bonus is it's pretty "Gray Man" as it looks like your typical REI consumer gear. The older model (often on sale at a big discount) has mesh side pockets that perfectly hold the Nalgene (or other military style) canteens so you don't need an extra pouch.

Was just in Hawaii for a week. I was always wearing swimsuits so I used my fanny pack as a sling to carry all my edc crap. I’m here to tell you, this is the way forward.

Have been using the bill people gear m2016 butt pack with prairie belt and two mobility bottle holders (larger holders). This allows me to carry a Keith titanium mess kit and water bottle so I can carry water as well as a cook kit. All of this paired with a check rig and I can do a lightweight carry out for a day trip.

This looks like nice little bag. I am a bag junkie. I have a ton of nice bags 511 vanquest maxpedition hidden woodsman custom leather Gamber bags etc. However the bag I keep going back to for day hicks is this inexpensive no name large fanny pack with a built in water bottle holder holder. It came with s cheap plastic water bottle but it fits my steel partier bottle perfectly. I just find these kind of funny packs for more comfortable them a any shoulder bag or small backpack.i been wanting to replace mine which I have been using for 20 years and thus may just work out. Thanks for your review.

Nice option. Wish the Fannypack had two lightweight shoulder straps. This way you can move the weight on and off your shoulders and off your back. Guess it is us guys with back problems and think about these things 😎

Listen I love MR but Mountainsmith has been in this game for decades and for the same price of both of these you get a really well thought out lumbar pack and the build quality is there. I have been rocking the same pack since university in 1996. How do you think it compares?

Great video. I've noticed that the water pocket you use is also from MR. However, it seems the only ones they carry now are using the MOLLE system instead of the buckle system that you have in the video. Wondering if you have any other recommendations for an external water pocket. Cheers.
