I read an interview the other day with Martin Barre in which he expressed frustration with Tull constantly being told by producers to turn a 7/4 rhythm into a 4/4 beat to conform with other rock acts' "standard beats." Tull didn't conform to their requests and the records kept coming with their iconoclastic rhythms. Thanks for another good mini-lesson, Andy.

The wonderful thing about tiggers! What a great way to introduce rhythm. I can't imagine how you keep 4 different beats in your 4 limbs. That's multiprocessing is what it is. Thanks again.
Interesting talk! It pings my mind with the 5 in the Hermetic Tree of Life that forms the basis of my mystical map since the mid 90's is in resonance with the idea of Geburah, which is the strength of the 5 that takes the stasis of the 4 and puts it into relation with the 3 which gives way to the movement indicated by the 5, the first Sephira on the way of the Flaming Sword or the Dove descending to Malkuth, the Kingdom of physics that induces a sense of movement and spin from the spacious visions and grand plans at the altitude of the Supernals into the dance of life that keeps humans in coherent rhythm with the rest of life. Also dance music has long been the medicine brought to the strife and struggle indicated in the 5. Also in the math of the Tarot on the Tree is that 3 plus 2 is the crossing of the Empress with the High Priestess and again the Empress who births the entire cosmos, Maat Isis with Sekhmet holding the heart crossing of the Strength card with the 3 as Binah, the gateway of form and Chokmah, the spinning energy of the urge to form without yet a suit to bind it, where the path that connects the 2 to the 3 on that level is again, the Empress. A method that Bill Bruford especially has mentioned in my research is to have, as in the 80's Crimson, a 4 on the floor basis under which the multiple cycles of time were woven with the octabons, snare drum, Fripp and Belew and Levin interweaving all held into the dance root of the stability of the 4, the stage upon which all the odd numbers pull and twist us into the jiggle of a multilevel perception of movement, which the human body is in reality. I sing and play all the instruments basic to rock bands with a few horns also in my skill set and learning to teach my feet how to be as deft with rhythm on the drum pedals is bringing all my other music skills into sharper perception and skill with being in time with the band, and the whole body power of my physical self integrates whole body mind which includes my energy field and tone of presence.

For want of something more entertaining to do while I was supposed to be working, I taught myself polyrhythms. It took a lot of very slow counting at first, but eventually I could feel the rhythms and transition from one to another while maintaining tempo. The only downside is that, not being a drummer, I have mot yet found a use for this knowledge. On the other hand, learning to play Subdivisions by Rush on guitar was an interesting exercise in learning how to respond to changing time signatures over a constant tempo.
Deep down inside of us there is a shuffle going on called heartbeat. " I got sunshine in my stomach Like I just rocked my baby to sleep..." The mother of visceral rhythm
I wish I could count. Time is a total mystery to my brain by the third click of the metronome it starts to deviate. I can't even clap in time. The only thing I can count is syllables. You do the music and I'll write haiku.
Andy! You started explaining all this just as I'm getting back into Zappa's music. I still can't figure out most of it but this is definitely helping. Cosmic debris seems to have a 3 feel (I thought it might be 6/8) throughout the song, although Google says it's it 1/4 which is weird. Anyway in the last verse there's a section that goes into regular 4/4 for a few bars.
Yes it's in 6/8 but Zappa straightens out the time out at certain points (for example 'I wrapped a newspaper 'round my head' section) It is the same as my 'bouncy bouncy fun fun fun fun fun.
Hambone. The first drum was a human drum, then hollow logs. Kids can do hambone and they don't have to be middle-class-my-parents bought-me-a-kit. I have multiple drums composed of discarded objects. No playing, no singing, no drums where I live unless I walk to the Boulevard and as always, the kit or instrument must be walkable because that's my transportation. About 11 years ago I said "effitt" and I carried my homemade kit to the Boulevard and I did my Ginger Baker impersonation and I had a ball. I even made 3 bucks. The West has spiritual figures since it was called the West. Carlos Castaneda, Gurdjieff, William Blake - the list is huge. Just because it doesn't look mysterious and involve developing yogic powers doesn't mean it ain't spiritual.
I don't really know why, but I find the German language to be quite moving. I have no idea why, but I also find it to be very compelling as well. I find that although I don't actually speak the language at all, I don't have to much trouble with listening to it for a short while, and being able to tell the difference between say, North German and Swiss German, Austrian German and Reinisch for example.
@ Passiv understanding of English is also Widespread in Switzerland. Whereas in Germany American Movies are synchronized in Swiss Cities they are subtitled. Way back in the 70ties when Cinema was a big Part of Teenage Live and French was the 2nd Language in School, our knowledge of English came from Cinema and Bob Dylan (or the Beatles or Chuck Berry and in my Case from Jethro Tull too.)
Still feels like magic to me! I like these weird rhythms, but I fail miserably when trying to count along. Of course, I cannot dance either ;-)) Perhaps the curse of a mathematician with limited access to the other half of the brain... Great video nevertheless!
"The Black Page Part Zed"? 🤔 1) I guess it's my duty to remind the listeners that overall Rhythm may SEEM as though it's about two's and threes, but in reality, the true dialectic is between Primes and Non-Primes. 2's and 3's are actually both Primes, but any Prime Number times itself creates a product that is guaranteed to NOT BE PRIME. Therefore, Primes, though semi-unpredictable, are also rather fragile, compared to their Non-Prime complements. This is intrinsic to their proportional rarity.

A few things I'm not sure about in thus video: 1. If rhythm is so basic and of the heart rather than mind, why is your explanation so of the mind? It's v explanation driven and v complicated. 2. If melodies and harmonies are of the mind, and not the heart, why can melodies , harmonies, chord changes etc provoke tears and Goosebumps etc.and strong feelings and emotions? This doesn't feel very cerebral to me, whereas your complex rhythms do (not so much more basic rhythms) 3. And what about our ears? And our voice boxes and the sound of the birds and the bees and the wind blowing through trees, rocks, the sound etc etc. And the fact we developed from animals with sounds. It seems odd that sapiens would be tapping on bits of wood but not maybe whistling or humming. Maybe even simple melodies or even singing ? We weren't mute.
Andy, a couple of points! You're not going to be the British Beato with only 3.5K views after two days! Are you? AND if you put music up, please make it accurately transcribed!
