  • I suffer through one of the worst 'prog' albums ever recorded. Is it 'so bad it's actually good'? No, it's just terrible.

Memoirs of an Officer and Gentleman is a prog masterpiece. It is worth the price of the whole album. The lyrics are poetry that tells a beautiful story. Canarios isn't bad. "… what it means to be an officer and a gentleman …" The last line sometimes makes me start to tear up.

Was it a good album? No. It was very weak ... BUT, there were some points that were good and just saying the entire album is bad because it goes along with your narrative is also weak. First, the album's lyricist (and that's what he does in all his efforts with ELP) is Pete SINFIELD, not Seinfeld. Second, Canario was a pretty good effort. Lastly, Memoirs was another pretty good effort. The lyrics tell a touching story of a man growing up and falling in love and going to war. The 4 pieces do NOT sound alike. I disagree with that. If you hate the album, fine ... but throwing the baby out with the bathwater is just lazy.

This album is clearly underrated in my opinion. I know it´s not the best one but this is not bullshit. ELP are talented performers, I like the way they play in Love Beach. Not so different to other recordings. I think you´re making a caricature, so far from reality.

When I was 15 years old, the album came out. I went to the record shop and when I saw the cover I said "My God" and on the back side I saw all short songs. I bought the record but I hadn't any faith. I was very disappointed with the songs. It had nothing to do with the real music of ELP. But after all the years I can say that there are albums that I never listen to. These are "In the hot seat" and "Works Vol I & II" I can't stand these albums. So the B-side of Love Beach isn't too bad. And songs like Canario and For you are OK. At least we can hear three people playing without trumpets or an orchestra which don't belong to them. Greg's voice is so clear on this album. It's not Brain Salad Surgery or Pictures at an exhibition but try to accept it. It was the record company who wanted this. If you don't like the album just don't play it !

  • @GoblinGirl
    @GoblinGirl 5 лет назад +1

    It's Peter SINFIELD, not SEINFELD.
You make it sound like Pete Sinfield was some outside writer who just happened to be hanging out in the Bahamas, and hooked up with Greg. He wasn't. He's a well known lyricist who worked with Greg all the way back to Greg's King Crimson days. Pete co-wrote lyrics on Brain Salad Surgery and both of the Works albums.
Ironically, the first Works album are solo albums. Each band member got one side to fiddle with, and none of the guys appear on each other's side except for Keith appearing on one track on Carl's side.
The record company wanted ELP to do a "commercial album", so that's why we got Love Beach. They actually owed Atlantic three more records, not just one, when Love Beach came out. They ended up breaking up after this, and to fill out their contract, released one live album and a greatest hits album. The live one (In Concert, later remastered and reissued as Works Live) is very good. The greatest hits album is pretty shoddy.
As for the actual album, yeah, it's not great, but it's not a complete disaster, not even close. Canario and Memoirs of an Officer and a Gentleman are great ELP tracks. For You isn't that bad either. Greg's voice sounds great, too. This album is better than their last studio album, In the Hot Seat, which was a complete mess and didn't even sound like them. Love Beach, for all its faults (mainly its cheesy lyrics), at least sounds like ELP.

A review to tell us how "bad" Love Beach is? How original! I don't think I've ever heard that before! 😒
Seriously, I don't think it's as bad as it's reputation. Granted, some of the songs have terrible and sleazy lyrics, and it's not their best. However, I really love "For You" and "Memoirs...", and the opening song is pretty good too, a different take on pop with a martial beat. The album title and cover make it an easy target, but there's good stuff here besides "Canario".
Also, the Peter "Seinfeld" references... Google is an amazing tool for fact checking, may want to use it in the future.

As a Fan since the reunion in '92, The no ideas LP was Works 2. It is shelved songs from the brain salad sessions, Keith's solo single, Greg's solo single and Works 1 leftovers. . As for Love beach, its a mixed bag. short possible singles tunes and a side long suite. Keith using the GX1 for all the songs did not go well. The lyrics, eehh. .Greg's singing is well fit in each song. Carl does a good job here in his signature style. The guys were tired and I feel they waited too long to follow BSS and rest after the mega tour for it.

This album is not great. It has moments that are...not good. But there is some good and this guy seems to be saying things because he's predisposed to slagging LB as the worst album ever. I believe that there needed to be another album following this one, produced by someone else, that stayed in the generally more relaxed vein of LB but with the hot garbage elements forcibly held out. As it happened, after a gap of several years, the EMERSON LAKE AND POWELL album came out and it was one of the most consistent - and consistently good - things the band ever did. Also: "Seinfeld??" "Tiriumverat?" Hard to come off as an authority on prog rock...

After their 40th Anniversary concert "High Voltage", that Keith's life was marked with unsuccessful surgeries on his hands, his flying was hampered by eyesight. Aging!

Peter “Signfield”? Lol. It’s “Sinfield” as in “Sin”, not “Sign” and he wrote the lyrics of many great songs, including the lyrics on “In the Court of the Crimson King” , In the “Wake of Poseidon” , “Lizard” and “Islands”, as well as ccasionally added touches of EMS VCS 3 synthesizer, see, e.g., the Ladies of the Road album recorded live on tour in 1971 and '72 or "Indoor Games" and "Happy Family" on the Lizard album. In fact, Fripp became involved with other projects (most notably the Centipede orchestra), which left Sinfield with much of the responsibility for the final version and design of the album Lizard, including the uniquely ornate jacket. Also, he co-wrote the majority of the lyrics with Lake for ELP’s “Brain Salad Surgery” album as well as all of the Greg Lake songs and “Pirates” on “Works Vol. 1” and “Vol. 2” including “Tiger in a Spotlight” and “I Believe in Father Christmas”. He also recorded a really great solo album called “Still” on ELP’s Manticore label which included Lake and John Wetton as well as many past King Crimson alumni, he also wrote the English lyrics for the Italian Prog band PFM to sing on their albums “Photo’s Of Ghosts” and “ The World Became the World”.
“Love Beach” is definitely a half hearted effort by the band with some pretty cheesy songs, but there are also a few good songs as well and I think as it was a contractual obligation album, they just had fun with it. "It's not that Love Beach is a bad album," Lake has said in an interview. "It was an album that the band really didn’t want to make. We were forced to make it contractually, but once we’d decided to do it, we gave it our best shot. So it was another ELP album, but it wasn’t the best of ELP records -- it wasn’t Tarkus, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgery, Pictures at an Exhibition or Emerson Lake and Palmer, or Works Volume 1. It wasn’t that quality. It was an album that was tired creatively."
Also regarding Sinfield, he produced Roxy Music’s first album as well as the McDonald and Giles solo album and wrote the lyrics to the song “Birdman” on that album, in the 80’s he got into writing more pop songs and also wrote many songs for the band “Buck’s Fizz”, believe it or not, he also wrote the Celine Dion song “Think Twice” on her “Colour Of My Love” album.

Peter Sinfield wrote only the lyrics. The music was by either Greg or Keith.

Love Beach wasn't recorded out of spite for the band not being able to do their own thing. According to Keith, the head of Atlantic wanted to the band to attempt to make an album with hit singles that would crossover into the mainstream, much in the similar vein of what bands like Yes and Genesis achieved around that time. They recorded at Chris Blackwell's studio in the Bahamas cause of attacks happening in the UK at the time.

Officer and a Gentleman really needed more work on it - it lacks polish. It could of been a hell of a lot better then.

Oh, you mean "Cocaine Beach"? Also, Pete Sinfield was the long time lyricist for the band (and also for King Crimson), going back to at least "Brain Salad Surgery."

The original had a cool advertisement for t-shirts and poster featuring a silver pirate ship on a black background. That is what I remember most. The songs are horrid. Really. It's what Satan sings to torture new souls on their arrival to hell.

Some people will like the album to be contrary or to be a rebel. Maybe this album could be used at Guantanamo prison to punish POW's

I'll admit it wasn't their best album but its still better than about 99.99999999999999% of today's music.

I'm 99.99999999999999% today's jazz, like kamasi washington, is way better than this. Although mainstream is extremly shit, there are a lot of bands that are still very good and in every genre (still not as good as 70's prog in my opinion)

Funny. I actually preferred the first side of soppy pop songs to the proggier second side which seemed pretty lame. I might have to go back and listen to it since people seem to rate it highly.

Am i the only one who thinks this album isn't that bad? I mean yeah the album is bad (Taste of my Love is disgraceful) but there is some good songs in here like Canario and Memoirs. If anything it's In the Hot Seat that really showed the worst from the band, seriously fuck that album.

Yes has never had an a album as bad as this, but they've had a few that came pretty close. A lot of people would choose Union, but I think that album was actually rather good in comparison to some of their later albums. The last album, Heaven & Earth was pretty bad, but it being Squire's last album I would be hesitant to call it their worst.

I too have some thoughts on this since ELP is still my favorite. I walked into the record store. I don't remember why, but I saw this. First of all, did I miss something? I didn't know they made a new album. But looking at it, the first thing I notices was the lettering. No where was the normal ELP logo and I had a suspicion about it right away. It didn't look like an ELP album and it probably wasn't going to sound like one. But, it was a new album by them, I gotta buy it. I liked "all I want is you." downhill after that. I thought side 2 was good. But I was excited because I thought "this album is goi ng to be a smash hit! I was wrong fofr obvious reasons and should have known better. The final blow was when I saw the album in a bin - all albums $4.99. Most albums I believe were in the 7 to 8 dollar range.
