I feel so bad for kids that grew up in an English speaking country but have foreign parents and feel scared or embarrassed to speak their actual first language. That teacher was incredibly bold to assume children can’t learn two languages at once. When I moved to England, my teachers luckily told my parents to not keep Portuguese from me as I would definitely lose it and I’m so grateful because today I speak to languages fluently. Moral of the story: teach your kids your mother tongue, and even though, today, I went to school and have lived most of all my life in England, I still plan to teach my own children Portuguese, if not more!

No you need to adjust to where you live. Speaking your mothertongue makes it even harder to fit in.
