  • Ptolemy is cross with Caesar!
    English: "Upstart, barbarian, and traitor".
Giulio Cesare in Egitto (Julius Caesar in Egypt, HWV 17), commonly known simply as Giulio Cesare, is an Italian opera in three acts written for the Royal Academy of Music by George Frideric Handel in 1724.
This is an English version, staged (sumptiously) for TV in 1985 by the English National Opera under Sir Charles Mackerras. This clip features James Bowman (counter-tenor - as Ptolemy). Short recitative, followed by the aria - Upstart, Barbarian...
I have always loved James Bowman, and his performance in this production (singing, acting, timing) is no exception. The acolytes do creep me out though!

When I first heard James' voice, I thought it was the most beautiful, ethereal voice I'd ever heard. It was his recording of Eternal Source of Light Divine. Over the years, nothing has changed my mind. He was unique and recordings such as this are a wonderful way to celebrate his artistry. May he rest in peace.

He was indeed Tim - wonderful, naughty, hugely funny, never took himself too seriously. A great loss, but he shines still through his recordings for all of us to appreciate and enjoy.

I also fell in love with his voice at first hearing. I also loved WATCHING him sing because it was so totally unaffected. He really was one of the best countertenors not only of the 20th century, but possibly of all time. May he rest in peace.

... The first time I heard James Bowman's voice was at home, listening to his recording of Vivaldi Stabat Mater and Nisi Dominus, and it was a revelation for me, he was the first to be GREAT after Deller gave rebirth to the technique. Well, I started to "follow" him all around europe, and enjoy performances of Julius Caesar, Ariodante, Rinaldo, etc. Bowman sang twice in the city where I live, Geneva, second time in Ariodante. I knew a young tenor who knew him, so they came to my place for tea!

There was once The Handel Opera Society in England, patronized by one of HM Elizabeth II's cousin, Lord Harewood. I belonged to this society, which had to stop in the early 1990's because the British government stopped providing the financial support. And HM Liz II is so un learned that she looks down on Harewood, well...
I have always had a real passion for Handel's operas, and for baroque music, and for the voices of countertenors. (more on next post)

What a lovely story, thank you Martine. Yes, James was a pioneer of the countertenor revival after Alfred Deller, and James' torch is now carried by many - not all of whom can actually project their voices to DO opera without radio-mics/amplification (as I'm sure you know!).
